A George I scarlet and gilt japanned double domed bureau cabinet, circa 1720, the moulded cornice above a pair of ogee arched bevelled mirror plates opening to reveal a well fitted interior with central concave two door cabinet under seven pigeon holes each with a wavy frieze over a single turned columns and five dividers to each side of the cabinet above an arrangement of ten short serpentine and concave drawers above the fall which shows a hunting party, opening to reveal a fitted interior with central cabinet flanked by four pigeon holes, two short drawers and two column drawers to each side over a sliding well, the fall over two pull-out lopers, two short and two long drawers fitted with later handles raised on short bracket feet, 98.5cm wide, 215.5m high, 62cm deep NOTE: Consigned from a Powys vendor the bureau cabinet was purchased in London before the second World War. The cabinet has more than a passing similarity to a similar piece attributed to John Belchier in the state bedroom at Erddig near Wrexham also a similar piece can be found at Penshurst noted in `A History of English Furniture` by Percy MacQuoid, page 158, Fig. 346 which depicts a cabinet described as `Scarlet lacquer writing cabinet, property of Lord De L`Isle and Dadle`. It is difficult though to attribute a maker as many London and provincial makers were guided by John Stalker and George Parkers 1688 `Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing.

Welsh interest, a Victorian presentation silver cigar case, by C. Cheshire, Birmingham 1892, rounded rectangular form, the hinged cover engraved with a crest and inscribed, ` Presented to J. C. Shaw Esq by The Rt. Hon H. Mathews M.P H.M Home Secretary July 20th 1892`, length 12.3cm, approx. weight 6oz. Henry Mathews (1826-1913) Q.C, M.P, P.C, K.C,created 1st Viscount Llandaff 1895 was descended from the Welsh Family of Mathew of Llandraff. He was Home Secretary in Lord Salisbury`s Administration from 1886-1892. He was the first Roman Catholic Cabinet Minister since the passing of the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829. He was first elected fro Birmingham East in 1886, and was re-elected 19th July 1892.
A late 17th Century walnut Cabinet fitted with two frieze drawers, above a pair of oval panel doors, the interior fitted with a centre small cupboard with three internal drawers surrounded by eight further drawers on a spiral leg, single drawer stand and bun feet. 3` 2" (96cms) wide. NB. included with the cabinet is a letter from Mallett and Sons, Bath to Sir Percy Hambro who purchased the cabinet from them in 1924, together with a letter from the previous owner giving brief details of the history of the cabinet, also dated 1924.
Ephemera – photographs – Arkwright family original photograph believed to be the wedding of John Hungerford Arkwright master of Hampton Court near Leominster to Lucy Davenport in 1866. Also in the group is Henry Arkwright noted cricketer who was killed only a few months later in an avalanche while climbing Mont Blanc. Together with a cabinet style photograph thought to show John Arkwright with a male relative.
Maritime – Vice Admiral Sir John Gore tetchy autograph letter signed to Sir James Graham at the Admiralty dated January 26th 1831 complaining that he had been overlooked for the command in the Mediterranean :’...I may probably have not right to question the ‘political considerations which have influenced the cabinet’ to set me aside but I have a right to assert that no officer can execute the orders he may receive with more zeal and fidelity than I should have done...’ Together with a copy of an autograph letter signed by Graham giving his reply and a similar dated the following August stating that the West India station would not be available for appointment for at least 15 months and expressing his disappointment after Gore had turned down the East India command : ‘... having disappointed you with respect to the Mediterranean Command I was anxious to offer you the next which was at my disposal...’ together with related correspondence
