Lot 18

Modernist display cabinet, circa 1900.Carved wood, root veneer and leaded glass.Measurements: 187 x 61.5 x 38 cm.Modernist display cabinet made of wood and decorated with carvings, beautifully grained root veneer and leaded glass decorated with a beautiful and complex plant design. It has a classical, architecturally inspired structure, with chamfered corners decorated with corbels and columns, a base of cut-out skirts with a stepped top and a moulded frieze crowned with a small cornice. It is a two-part piece of furniture, the smaller lower part serving as a pedestal for the upper part. This lower body has a door with its handle, decorated on the front with the aforementioned root veneer, in a rectilinear recess topped by a segmental arch. This door is flanked by two typically modernist corbels, carved with sinuous, flowing forms that evoke the organic without actually making it concrete. The upper body follows a similar pattern, although it is more developed at a decorative level. The door is closed by a stained-glass window that combines leaded glass plates of different colours and finishes: marbled, pressed, tinted glass in different shapes, with different colours, composing a floral design halfway between realism and abstraction. The handle of this door has a more complex design than the one below it, based on sinuous, flowing lines that form an asymmetrical pattern. On both sides of this body we see turned columns made up of several superimposed bodies, located on chamfered corners that protrude from the ground plan, creating protrusions in the line of union between the two bodies. Inside this upper body is an open space, with a mirror covering the back that would multiply the light and, with it, the play of light and colours of the stained-glass window.

Lot 28

Liquor cabinet; France, c 1860.Wood. Cut and gilt glass.Complete original glassware. There is a break in the base and some missing pieces in the wood.Measurements: 27 x 33 x 24 cm.Liquor box made of wood, which presents a simple design and straight lines with a rectangular structure. The piece has a sober decoration based on the expressiveness of the material, but it also has ornamental elements on the front, both on the body and on the lid, which have a classicist-inspired design, based on geometric ornaments. The set is completed by several transparent glass goblets and four decanters. All the glass elements, glasses and tumblers, are decorated with carved and gilded ornamentation, combining a geometric carved design with vegetal ornamentation in gilding. These types of boxes were very common at the time, making them a basic and practical type of box that could be used both in the home and on the move.

Lot 37

NATIONAL cash register; USA, 1903.Serial number 768782-537-3-C.With certificate of authenticity dated 1978.Measurements: 88 x 78 x 54 cm.National cash register, made in the USA for the foreign market in 1903. It has three drawers in the cabinet of the base, marked with the letters A, B and C, that allow to take up to three different accounts. The machine is made of brass, with decorative motifs in relief, mainly classical motifs such as palmettes, vegetal scrolls and acanthus leaves. It also has an upper cartouche, with a sinuous modernist profile, on which the inscription 'Amount of your Purchase' can be read. It still has all the buttons, in red, black and yellow, and on the upper part we can see the representation of two hands with shirt cuffs, pointing to the indicators for the payment method and amount (in pesos), also visible on the back. It has two sheets of translucent glass at the base, and stands on a beautifully veined piece of furniture, with the aforementioned letters A, B and C on the front of the drawers, in beautiful modernist typography. At the end of the 19th century, most businesses were growing, acquiring dimensions that went beyond the family sphere, where it was usual for only one or two people to handle the money. Larger businesses began to worry about petty theft by their employees, so it was soon a logical conclusion to use mechanical systems for cashing up establishments. James Ritty (Dayton, Ohio), a café owner, is now credited with creating the first cash register. After realising that he was losing money in his business, he and his brother John invented and patented the first cash register on 4 November 1879. Together, in the following years, they developed new models, including the one known as "The Incorruptible Cashier". Success was slow in coming, however, as they failed to make a successful name for themselves until 1885 when they attracted the attention of a new partner, John Patterson, with whom they founded The National Manufacturing Company (shortly afterwards The National Cash Register Company). Despite the reluctance of shop owners, and especially their employees, Patterson succeeded in paving the way for the new invention and made the cash register the centrepiece of the shop, the focus of public attention. This was achieved by showing the customer the attractiveness of the new invention (through beautiful and ornate designs), and also by creating systems that helped employers to prevent employee theft. Thus, National would begin to manufacture cash registers with bases of fine woods, sometimes richly ornamented with marquetry, and cash registers of metals such as bronze, brass, copper and also plain metal, albeit adorned with engraved motifs or beautiful enamelled designs. In addition, these machines came with a two-year guarantee, which meant that they were well received by shop owners. Nevertheless, many of these early cash registers have survived, in working order and in good condition, to the present day, and in fact have remained in use for generations. Thanks to this success, many other companies began to manufacture cash registers; soon more than two hundred new firms would appear, although National would be the largest and most reputable.

Lot 68

JOSEF HOFFMANN (Brtnice, Czech Republic, 1870 - Vienna, 1956).Jugendstil side cabinet, ca. 1900.Mahogany wood.Measurements: 113 x 31 x 26 cm.An auxiliary piece of furniture in the Jugendstil style, Central European modernism, made of mahogany wood and characterised by the clean lines and the play of geometric volumes typical of Jugendstil, which is combined with a vertical structure, based on closed and open spaces, which is common to the whole of Europe at this time. The base appears open, raised on two stipe legs with horizontal carved grooves, with a closed moulded base, like a plinth, and a shelf at mid-height. The central area is occupied by a closed cupboard with a translucent dark glass door, moulded with an irregular organic-looking irregular finish. Finally, above the cupboard is an open shelf with a barred base and truncated pyramid-shaped finials to match the legs.An architect and industrial designer, Josef Hoffmann studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he was a pupil of Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner, whose theories of functional, modern architecture would profoundly influence his work. He won the Prix de Rome in 1895, and the following year he joined Wagner's office, collaborating with Olbrich on some projects for the Metropolitan. He established his own office in 1898, and taught at the School of Decorative Arts in Vienna between 1899 and 1936. He was also a founding member of the Viennese Secession. In 1900 he travelled to London, where he came into contact with the English school and discovered Mackintosh. On his return, he set up a workshop for the production of objects based on designs by artists of the Secession, and thus the Wiener Werkstätte was born, a workshop which had a great influence on 20th-century industrial design. By 1903, production began on an international scale. In the course of his life, Hoffmann produced a variety of projects for buildings and furnishings, and exhibited his creations all over the world. He is currently represented in the MAK and the Leopold Museum in Vienna, the Metropolitan and MoMA in New York, the Brohan in Berlin, the Courtauld Institute in London and the Victoria & Albert in London, among many others.

Lot 80

JOAN BUSQUETS I JANÉ (Barcelona, 1874 - 1949).Modernist bed, ca. 1900.Light walnut wood with carved and gilded decorations.Measurements: 175 x 170 x 200 cm.Modernist bed made of light-coloured walnut wood, a design by Joan Busquets decorated with carved motifs in high and low relief and polychrome gilding. It consists of a high headboard with a cut-out coping, outlined by sinuous mouldings and decorated with carved and gilded floral motifs. The organic and naturalistic layout of the fully modernist headboard is reflected in the foot of the bed, determined by the curved mouldings and the coup de fouet marquetry. The whole structure is raised on bulbous legs and is outlined with fine and delicate mouldings with floral ornaments in relief that reinforce its organic and naturalistic language. It is, therefore, a first-rate piece of furniture within Catalan modernism, as it was produced by one of the best workshops of the time, that of Joan Busquets, and for the perfection and meticulousness with which each of its details were made.A furniture designer and decorator, Joan Busquets is now considered one of the most representative figures of Catalan Modernisme. He began his training in the family workshop and went on to study at the Llotja School in Barcelona, where his teachers were Guitart and Lostaló. In the academic year 1895-96 he was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to travel around Spain, and which he obtained thanks to a project for a Renaissance-style bookcase-cabinet. He exhibited furniture projects for the first time at the Barcelona Exhibition of 1896. Joan Busquets' workshop was one of the most outstanding in Modernista Catalonia and is today, together with the production of Gaspar Homar, the most representative example of Catalan Modernista furniture and decoration. He was president of the Foment de les Arts Decoratives between 1918 and 1921, and supervised the manufacture of the furniture for Gaudí's Casa Calvet. Works by Busquets can currently be found in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the Güell Palace in Barcelona, the National Museum of Decorative Arts and the Museum of Catalan Modernism in Barcelona, among others, as well as in various important private collections.

JOAN BUSQUETS I JANÉ (Barcelona, 1874 - 1949).Pair of modernist bedside tables, ca. 1900.Light walnut wood with carved and gilded decorations. Marble top and metal handles.Measurements: 127 x 45 x 41 cm.Pair of modernist coffee tables designed by Joan Busquets, whose organicist structure contains a lower compartment closed with a folding door, followed by an intermediate openwork hollow and a final upper surface under which there is a narrow drawer. The upper part consists of a reddish marble top, with veins in different shades, on which rests a high backrest with a small shelf supported by two small corbels. It stands on low feet, the fronts of which have a typically Art Nouveau cut-out and sinuous profile. These front feet are decorated with gilt vegetal motifs. Both the door and the drawer and back of the side tables are decorated with stems and mouldings of marked eloquence, typical of Joan Busquets' cabinetmaking, which converge in rosettes, coup de fouet and other floral motifs, carved in high relief, which stand out for their volume and quality.A furniture designer and decorator, Joan Busquets is now considered one of the most representative figures of Catalan Modernisme. PRX 4550This rare, original, left-hand drive Phantom VI was supplied to its first owner, a Mr M Caransa, through agents N V Grund & Co of Utrecht, Holland. The car's original finish was Tudor Grey with red coachlines, which was matched by the interior, the front compartment being trimmed in grey hide and the rear in grey West of England cloth. There was a central glass division, full air conditioning to front and rear compartments, a cocktail cabinet, occasional rear seats, Sundym glass, and an intercom system. It is understood that the Phantom arrived in the immediately preceding ownership in the mid-to-late 1970s and initially was retained in Europe, where it was very much cherished and enjoyed by its owner. At some time the car came to the USA, and it is assumed that the odometer was changed at this time from kilometres to the current MPH unit. The Rolls-Royce was also repainted from its original livery to the current two-tone scheme of Garnet over Mason's Black, with twin cream coachlines. The current vendor purchased the Phantom at Bonhams' Greenwich sale in June 2011 (Lot 382). Today the car's condition reflects its age, but it appears predominantly complete and as originally supplied. With its rare left-hand drive configuration and previous long-term ownership, this is an automobile that would benefit from some refurbishment, enabling it to be enjoyed as it has in the past. Accompanying documentation consists of copies of the State of Connecticut Assignment of Ownership/Bill of Sale form and New York State registration document, and copies of all the original factory paperwork associated with car: build specifications, warranty work, test reports, correspondence, etc. The car has been on static display for several years and will require recommissioning prior to road use. Please note that if this vehicle remains within France the reduced rate of Import VAT at 5.5% will be charged on the hammer price.
