Metal and shakudo Kodansu cabinet on a dragon carved hardwood baseJapanese, Meiji periodin the form of a Buddhistic Shrine, of rounded oval form, decorated in Iro-e-zogan covering various metal styles including shibuichi and shakudo, the domed copper top shows an ornamental handle formed as two facing dragon heads set upon an ornamental collar encircled by another dragon with gilt flames around it's trailing body on a copper tinted ground, the oval two door body with a floral cluster for open and closing, the interior is finely decorated with trees, plants and flowers associated with Japan, the reverse showing a river scene with sail boats against a mountainous background over which hangs a flowering tree, the interior with eight asymetrical drawers, each decorated along the doors with further examples of Japanese flowers and trees all over a gilt ground, the base with a rounded border carved with waves supported by four feet decorated with breaking wave patterns and signed Dai Nihon To with artists signature in a mixed standard script and Sosho, on separate fine ebony wood base, finely carved in high relief around the sides with two facing dragons encircling the four legs of the stand, the cabinet measures 23cm x 12cm from the dome top to the base, the ebony stand measures 7cm x 18cm With signs of wear consistent with age and use. With marks. With some patina/verdigris. The stand with a repair.

Ellenborough Edward Law, first earl of (1790-1871), politician, governor-general of India. Autograph letter signed, to Major General Sir Philip M. Melville, 2 sides, 8vo, Southam Delabere, Cheltenham, January 4th 1866. Thanking him for his "Memorials from the Officers of the Indian Army" adding "There is another subject which ought to occupy the attention of the Govr, that of facilitating and inducing the transfer of officers from the Queen's to the Indian Service this a matter of vital importance". Narrow strip of paper adhering to reverse edge indicating removal from an album page Note: Prior to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, Ellenborough had urged Canning not to reduce the strength of European troops in India, which were being reduced to support the Crimea campaign. He sacrificed his own post in government in urging restraint after the Mutiny, but his resignation saved his policy, which was reaffirmed by the cabinet, and the resulting royal proclamation of November 1858, offered a wide-ranging amnesty and promises to respect the rights and beliefs of Indians. -
An interesting account of Horace Walpole's experience of the London earthquake alluded in his letters of 1750 copied in fine hand. A small quantity of cabinet photographs of naval interest, including those taken by Debenham & Smith, Hamptons, Mr Isaac & Riddle and another by Hamptons together with two cabinet photographs of Ellen Terry, postcards, cards of Fanny and Arthur Bertrand. This lot includes three photographic prints of a noble family, a framed coloured engraving of Buxton Crescent in the 1800's and a quantity of photographs relating to the Harris and Phillips families, a Genealogical Record of the Harris family (1770-1807), handwritten record of the Harris family dating from 1770 to 1807, written in a contemporary note-book and containing interesting notes in diary from covering various events with some focus on the price of bread. This lot continues with a photograph of a doorway which shows a carving possibly 15th century, amongst other miscellaneous items. -
A Victorian burr walnut two-section dentist's cabinet, the top section having a cylinder top revealing a mirror above a marble shelf with twelve shelves below, the lower having a pull-out slide, single drawer and cupboards under. 82x161x44cm.In need of some attention. Damage to top left corner. Appears to have had a gallery (now absent), two missing handles to drawers and also to top compartment. key in top lock is stuck and the lock non-functional. No additional keys present to test other locks.
A Brynmawr Furniture Makers oak Arts & Crafts fireside chair, circa 1935, with provenance The maker of these chairs (name withheld at the family's request) worked at the Brynmawr Furniture Factory from 1932 as a 14 year old apprentice. After completing his apprentice, he worked as a qualified cabinet maker working under the guidance of Paul Matt. He made various pieces of furniture within the factory and was able to keep the pieces for personal use, which have remained in the family home. The furniture he made utilised the designs and structure recognisable only to the Gwalia Factory (Brynmawr). Employees at the factory were not allowed to attach the factory badge on any of the pieces they made themselves and therefore no badge is present. They were purchased by the vendor directly from the family of the maker.
