Charles I (1625-1649), Welsh Marches (?), Halfcrown, 1644, mm. plume, crude workmanship after the style of Bristol and from a recut Chester rev. die, horseman left, three plumes above Declaration in two lines divided by row of pellets, date below, 14.80g/6h (Bull 684; SCBI Brooker 1212, same dies; N –; S 3135). Both sides slightly off-centre, otherwise very fine with old cabinet tone, extremely rare £4,000-£5,000 --- Provenance: V.J.E. Ryan Collection, Part II, Glendining Auction, 22-4 January 1952, lot 1333; F. Willis Collection, Part I, Glendining Auction, 5 June 1991, lot 351; J.R. Hulett Collection, Part XVIII, DNW Auction 175, 6 May 2020, lot 74. The location of this mint is uncertain - probably in the west of England towards the border with Wales. Pearce (SNC January 2014, p.142) postulates an issue struck for Prince Rupert after he left Chester in August 1644 and perhaps to be associated either with those coins known to have been struck at Hereford in the late autumn of 1644, or a possible issue in the town of Monmouth in November 1644

Charles I (1625-1649), Carlisle, Shilling, 1645, type I, c : r crowned flanked by trefoils of pellets, value below, obs carl and date, rosette above and below, 5.16g/1h (Hird 244 and SCBI Brooker 1220, same dies; N 2635; S 3138). Flat in places, otherwise very fine or better with attractive cabinet toning £10,000-£12,000 --- Provenance: H.M. Lingford Collection; Baldwin’s of St James’s Auction 40, 21 November 2019, lot 48 Carlisle was defended by the Royalist forces under Sir Thomas Glemham from October, 1644 until the following June, when it was surrendered to the commander of the investing Scottish army, David Leslie, later Lord Newark. The city was never assaulted, the siege being rather in the nature of a blockade, and the surrender was brought about in part by the scarcity of food, and in part by the hopelessness of relief. For after the defeat of the King's forces at Naseby on 14 June 1645, the garrison, realising that further resistance was vain, opened negotiations for the surrender of the city, and the defenders, who numbered some seven hundred, were permitted to march out with all the honours of war on 25 June

She went on to complete busts of Lenin and other notable figures in his cabinet, and was a close friend of Charlie Chaplin

λ AN ANGLO-CHINESE HUANGHUALI BUREAU CABINET QIANLONG, C.1750-60 with a moulded cornice, above a pair of panelled doors with leaf carved mouldings, enclosing an associated adjustable shelf and two drawers, the backboards with an inscription with Chinese characters for a retail establishment, above a hinged fall revealing nine drawers and five pigeonholes around a central cupboard, above four long graduated drawers and bracket feet, with paktong escutcheons, hinges and handles, some of the drawer linings and pigeonholes with Chinese character marks 190.2cm high, 108cm wide, 56cm deep Provenance George Rognvald (Bill) Sykes Esq (1889-1955) and by descent to the current owner. George Sykes joined the Malay Civil Service in 1913 and specialised in Chinese, learning to speak three different dialects. He was stationed in Singapore, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh (where there is a road named after him) and Singapore again. The highlight of his career was when he became Resident Councillor of Malacca, the oldest Malay state. On each of his postings, because of his expertise in Chinese, he was appointed the Protector of the Chinese. The bureau was possibly acquired whilst he was a resident in Malacca. Catalogue Note This bureau cabinet was constructed in China, probably Canton or Macau, for an English client, possibly ordered for an East India Company official. It is made of huanghuali, a timber native to Asia. Huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) literally translates as 'yellow flowering pear' wood which is a member of the rosewood family. It was predominantly found on the island of Hainan and was the wood of choice for the Emperor of China and the elite during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This cabinet is based on an English prototype but constructed in an entirely Chinese way, in-particularly with the use of solid timbers. A very similar pair of cabinets were sold in these rooms, Furniture, Works of Art & Clocks, 9th January 2020, lot 169 for £112,500 (including fees). A Sevres Louis Philippe period porcelain cabinet plate, early 19th century, the central hand-painted panel probably depicting Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard (c.1476?1524) defending the bridge at the Battle of Garigliano, set within a cobalt blue border with gilt highlights, painted title 'Bayard a Brescia (1503)', painted entwined 'L' maker's mark with central 'A' and printed 'Chateau Des Tuileries' medallion to base, 24cm diameter, with a similar hand-painted Sevres plate with painted title 'Chateau d'Eu', painted entwined 'L' maker's mark with central 'A' and printed 'Ch. De Breux' medallion to base, 24cm diameter, and three further similar at fault examples (5) Provenance; The Estate of Lord Harlech CONDITION REPORT:The Pierre Terrail plate shows rubbing to the gilt highlights, particulalrly to the fine pin lines around the laurel border, but no visible chips, cracks or losses. The Chateau d'Eu plate shows extensive rubbing to areas of the gilt on the rim, but no visible chips cracks or losses. The other Chateau plate shows two chips to the rim, one 1cm wide, the other 2cm wide, and extensive rubbing to the gilt highlights. The two remaining plates show extensive repairs (one riveted, the other glued).
