A GEORGE II OAK ARCHITECTURAL BOOKCASE OR CABINETIN NEO PALLADIAN STYLE, CIRCA 1740The dentilled cornice supported by large fluted Corinthian pilasters 235cm high, 147cm wide, 68cm deep Provenance: Previously sold Sothebys London, Philip Wacher Collection (1916-1998), 12th September 2000Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields HouseThis bookcase/ cabinet is illustrated, Herbert Cescinsky, English Furniture from Gothic to Sheraton, The Dean Hicks Co. 1937, page 62.Please note, this bookcase has been constructed from eighteenth century and later elements and not as originally stated in the catalogue. Please refer to the detailed condition report and images. Condition Report: Please note: This bookcase has been constructed from eighteenth century and later elements and not as originally printed in the catalogueThere are scratches, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.Various patches, repairs, inset sections and some border losses. This bookcase has been constructed incorporating 18th century and later elements. The cornice some other sections incorporating later timber elements visible from the exterior. The interior construction with associated timber elements of various age and size secured to support the exterior 'frame' of the bookcase. Some sections of timber, particularly those visible from the interior, bear marks and/ or holes suggesting they are re-purposed elements. It appears that the visible exterior of the bookcase is constructed from elements of 18th century room panelling or a 'built in' element of a room , and incorporating other contemporary and later elements in order to construct the bookcase as it now stands. The nature of this construction has resulted in there being void holes and gaps to the interior and void sections visible between elements ( such as parts of the cornice are viewed from above.) The carved capitals and carved elements of the frieze with dark stain or ebonised. There are patches adjacent to the parliament hinges, the doors opening to touch the carved capitals. A LARGE GEORGE II CARVED GILTWOOD BACCHUS HEAD WALL BRACKET CIRCA 1765 Central mask flanked by foliate scrolls 57cm wide, 46cm high, 17cm deepProvenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields HouseThe design draws, in part, on a design published in the 3rd edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, published in 1762 (plate CLXI, dated 1760). The V&A Museum holds in its collections a pair of brackets from the Ballroom at Langley Park, Norfolk which display a similar handling of the subject. AN UNUSUAL GEORGE II MAHOGANY BOOKCASE OR CABINETCIRCA 1740, POSSIBLY IRISHThe dentil moulded breakfront cornice above a band carved with oak leaves and acorns, centred by a carved male bust, possibly depicting Jonathan Swift, the pair of astragal glazed doors flanked by stylised Ionic columns 210cm high, 125cm wide Provenance: Ex lot 40, Sothebys, London, 5th May 1989 Previously sold at Sothebys, London, Property from the collection of the late the Hon. Lady Benthall, Benthall Hall, 2nd December 1977Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields HouseThe carved male bust to the 'keystone' terminal of the upper frieze of this bookcase or cabinet bears a strong resemblance to Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), the Anglo-Irish satirist and author of Gulliver's Travels and A Tale of a Tub. A similar bust of Swift was executed by Michael Rysbrack. Swift would have been an appropriate subject for an Irish bookcase of this date. Similar carved keystones with portrait busts can be seen above the doors at 10 Henrietta Street, Dublin. See Irish Furniture, The Knight of Glin & James Peill, Yale University Press, p.69 Fig 78.
Y A RARE GEORGE III SPECIMEN PARQUETRY AND MARQUETRY TEA CADDY IN THE MANNER OF GEORGE HEPPLEWHITE, CIRCA 1790 The hinged top with 'EC' monogram to underside engraved to metal plate within rosette relief 11.5cm high, 12cm wide, 10cm deepProvenance: Property from the Phillip Lucas Collection, Spitalfields HouseThe unusual interior decoration to the inside of the lid is rarely seen. A cut out extract from the ATG with the caddy illustrates a similar example, sold by Sotheby's Pulborough which was signed "N Martin maker, Froxfield, 1793". The design motif of the heart or conjoined hearts at the centre of each panel suggests this may have been gifted as a love token. The design of this caddy is related to the design at Plate 57 of Hepplewhite's "The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide of 1794. Condition Report: Generally good- seems to have been cleaned gently within the last 30 years. Minor veneer and stringing repairs and replacements, the finial to the lid bone.
