James H. Cookson (British, 1883-1947) Peshawar India, colourful study of a torrid day, with two figures standing on a dirt path flanked by verdant vegetation, signed and dated 1916, framed and mounted under glass, 12 x 17 cm James Cookson was born in Kendal in 1883 and demonstrated early talent as a painter, winning the National Medal for Success in Art. During the First World War he saw service with the British Army on the North-West Frontier, and made two books of paintings and drawings, recording people and places in Northern India and Afghanistan. Following the war he found employment as a cabinet maker to Simpson's of Kendal, the renowned Arts and Crafts company, and during his time there he carried out commissions for the RMS Titanic and for Blackwell; the Arts and Crafts house at Bowness-on-Windermere.
A circa 1838 French boulle work writing compendium by Alphonse Giroux & Co, 7 Rue du Coq St. Honore, Paris, signed on the lock plate, raised hinged upper section opening to a fully fitted birds eye maple veneered and strung interior of stationery dividers and writing accoutrement area over a hinged writing slope with inset red velvet surface with birds eye maple lined storage compartment below, bright cut engraved hinges and lock plate, height 21cm, width 37cm Notes: Maison Alphonse Giroux established in 1799 as cabinet maker and expanded into the production of luxury goods which attracted the attention of French Kings and members of Royalty. In 1857 the business moved to 43 Boulevard de Capucines.

Ltd., with compositor's slope above, metal cabinet sides and slope, wooden printer's type tray drawers containing sets of lead alloy type, including Times Roman etc. of various sizes from 10 - 24 point, cabinet dimensions 90.5 width x 139 height x 49.5cm depth (35.5 x 54.5 x 19.5 inches) (1)

A late 19th century Sevres porcelain cabinet plate centred with the portrait of a young woman with ringlets, indistinctly signed May, with a gilt heightened border on a lemon yellow ground, printed marks to the revers, diameter 24cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a fine 4cm hairline crack, more noticeable to the back of the plate, rubbing to the gilding and a few light surface scratches throughout, otherwise OK.
An unusual late 19th century mahogany cotton reel cabinet of three drawers, the top inscribed "Before I sit down let me remind you that, for strength, for finish and smoothness, Carlile's sewing cotton is unsurpassed...", with each of the drawer fronts also inscribed "Carlile's Sewing Cotton", width 55cm. CONDITION REPORT: See additional photographs. Surface marks throughout commensurate with age.
A Baisch Diplomat Series dental cabinet with pale blue powdered steel body, four shallow drawers above one deep drawer above two hinged doors containing removable shelves to the front, with hinged doors containing removable shelves either side and a fold down section above hinged doors enclosing drawers below, with castors and pulling handles either side, internal label inscribed "Sirona-Diplomat Nr.10295", height including side galleries 108cm, width 111cm.
A 19th century European walnut serpentine front cabinet, the upper section centred with a pair of cupboard doors enclosing three baize lined shelves, flanked by two fluted and carved columns with acanthus capitols, surmounted with a scroll carved pierced pediment flanked with two single doors above a long compartmentalised frieze drawer above a pair of doors enclosing four shelves, with acanthus scroll decorations to the corners on carved bun feet, height 195cm, width 103cm.

An Edwardian mahogany surprise drinks cabinet, the twin hinged lid activating a cantilever interior fitted with silver mounted cigar box, various glasses and decanters (some replacements), no.1022/11, with inset ivorine label for Finnigans Ltd, Deansgate, Manchester, above a circular galleried undertier, on square tapering supports terminating in brass castors, top 60 x 58cm. CONDITION REPORT: Top is badly sun bleached. A few deep gouges and scratches. Action works well. Sun bleaching to gallery. Some of the glasses are associated and two of the decanters are chipped.
