An impressive Arts and Crafts oak bookcase, designed by Ernest Gimson, executed by Peter Waals, circa 1924, the upper section with pair of twin glazed doors, above a further pair of glazed cupboards flanked by single drawers and panelled cupboards, raised on block feet, metalwork by Alfred Bucknell, width 183cm, depth 51cm, height 220cm.Provenance:By repute, acquired in 1924 direct from the Chalford workshops by Paul S. Cadbury, thence by descent. The renowned Cadbury family of Bourneville, Edgbaston, and the local environs of Birmingham were strong patrons of Gimson and his workshops, support that continued after his death in 1919. Undoubtedly the largest patron of the family was William Adlington Cadbury who is well documented throughout reference works as being one of the workshops' three main clients. William Cadbury furnished his King's Norton home with examples of works by Peter Waals, who as Gimson's chief cabinet maker continued executing examples throughout the 1920s and into the 1930s at a new workshop in Chalford. It is even noted that he bought pieces and gifted them to his relations for weddings and special occasions. This bookcase comes from another lineage of the Cadbury family, via Paul S. Cadbury, nephew to William. Paul is listed alongside his uncle as one of the original subscribers to the limited publication of "Ernest Gimson, His Life and Work", Shakespeare Head Press, published in 1924, at that time residing at Hillcrest, Farquhar Road, Edgbaston. Clearly Paul had inherited his uncle's admiration for the workshop's cabinetmaking, and acquired a piece of this size and stature for his personal residence. This is believed to have been acquired directly from Peter Waals at Chalford in 1924, and subsequently inherited and offered by the family.
