An extensive French carved walnut ten piece bedroom suite:, decorated with swags of foliage and tied ribbons, comprising - a pair of bow-fronted bedside cupboards with black variegated marble tops, each fitted with a drawer and enclosed by a door below, 43cm (1ft 5in) across, a kidney-shaped dressing table with oval swing frame mirror and single frieze drawer, 98cm (3ft 2 1/2in) wide, a bergere occasional chair with triple cane panel back and serpentine seat, an oval bevelled mirror with spiral ribbon surround and ribbon tied floral foliate cresting, 101cm (3ft 3 3/4in) x 13cm (4ft 5in), a pair of small oval mirrors, 28cm (11in) x 41cm (16in), a side cabinet of D-shaped breakfront outline with a black and grey variegated marble top fitted with four central drawers flanked by a pair of enclosed cupboards, 142cm (4ft 8in) wide, a king size bed with shaped and rounded foot board and high panelled headboard, 183cm (6ft) wide and an armoire of D-shaped outline, with central oval mirror door, 175cm (5ft 9in) wide, each piece raised on turned, fluted and carved tapered legs.
An Edwardian mahogany and inlaid serpentine fronted display cabinet:, bordered with boxwood lines, having a moulded cornice with rounded projections, the frieze decorated with ribbon tied husk garlands and oval paterae, enclosed by a central glazed astragal oval panelled door, flanked by an enclosed glazed cupboard to either side, and with three cupboards below, each enclosed by an oval figured panel door, between simulated fluted columns continuing to turned tapered legs, 152cm (5ft) wide, 184cm (6ft 0 1/2in) high.
A fine set of eight George III carved mahogany dining chairs in the manner of Robert Manwaring:, the backs with trellis work centred with quatrefoils in blind fret geometric surrounds, serpentine top rails with incised lattice and reeded pagoda crestings and cabochon rocaille ornament, the upholstered stuff over seats with blind fret seat rails and square chamfered legs, headed with pierced fret spandrels.*Provenance Kingsnympton Park, Devon.* Notes The present chairs closely relate to a design by Robert Manwaring illustrated in 'The Cabinet and Chair-Makers Real Friend and Companion,' 1765, pl. 13 and can also be compared with a design for a similar lattice-back chair illustrated by Thomas Chippendale in 'The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director', 1754, pl. XXII.* Notes Manwaring described himself as a cabinet-maker trading from the Haymarket, although no marked or documented furniture by him has yet come to light. Instead, he is best remembered for a series of publications in the 1760's of Rococo, Chinese and Gothic designs, from which the present chair is derived.'The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion' gives advice on types of wood, painted finishes and even loose cushions, and indeed, Manwaring states that he has executed some of the designs for chairs, although these are not known to exist.Related examples include a set of chairs recorded in the Goldschmitt collection, illustrated in Ralph Edwards and Percy Macquoid 'The Dictionary of English Furniture' rev. ed., 3 vols, 1954, vol I, p. 286, fig. 192; a single chair illustrated in Francis Spar (ed.) 'Le Style Anglais' 1750 - 1850, 1959, p. 96, and an armchair now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated in Francis Lenygon 'Furniture in England from 1660 - 1760', 1914, p. 64, fig 92.* Notes A similar set of fourteen chairs was sold from the collection of Captain C W D Worthington, Kingston Russell House, Dorset, Christies, 24th September 1984.
A Regency rosewood chiffonier/side cabinet:, the carved superstructure formerly fitted with a mirror, having pierced foliate scroll and palmette cresting and scroll uprights headed with paterae, the cabinet surmounted by a rectangular panel of red and grey variegated marble, enclosed by a pair of mirror panel doors, flanked by moulded pilasters with scroll capitals, on reeded bun feet, 124cm (4ft 0 3/4in) wide, 197cm (6ft 5 1/2in) overall height.
A Victorian walnut and gilt metal mounted pier cabinet:, the top of slightly recessed breakfront outline, with an applied foliate edge and frieze panel with rocaille, foliate and flowerhead ornament, enclosed by a burr veneered door with central oval paterae in tied floral spray, between moulded stiles with applied foliage on a plinth base with central moulded lozenge, 84cm (2ft 9in) wide, 115cm (3ft 9 1/4in) high.
A Victorian mahogany low side cabinet:, the top with rounded corners and a reeded dentil edge, having a central cupboard enclosed by a pair of doors with blind fret foliate scroll ornament, flanked by a pair of enclosed cupboards each with a small drawer and with applied carved rosette husk and foliage to the doors and rounded corners on a plinth base, 150.5cm (4ft 11 1/4in) long, 91.5cm (3ft) high.
An early 19th century Dutch mahogany, oak and floral marquetry domed display cabinet: of canted design, the upper part with a moulded cornice, decorated with trailing floral foliate stems, enclosed by a pair of glazed panel doors, the lower part with chequer banding enclosed by a central pair of fielded panel doors decorated with birds amidst urns of flowers and foliage, the sides with further urns of floral foliage on bracket feet, 151cm (4ft 11 1/3in) wide x 193.5cm ( 6ft 4 1/4in ) high.
A walnut veneer domed upright display cabinet in the Queen Anne taste:, with a moulded cornice and green painted interior with adjustable shelves enclosed by a moulded glazed panel door, the base enclosed by a raised moulded cartouche-shaped panel door between fluted canted angles, on bracket feet, 71cm (2ft 4in) wide, 189cm (6ft 2 1/2in) high.* Bearing an ivory plaque W.
