A George III mahogany serpentine commodeIn the manner of John CobbWith a brushing slide above three long graduated drawers, flanked by keeled angles, over a shaped apron, on slender splayed legs, 106cm wide x 60cm deep x 85cm high, (41 1/2in wide x 23 1/2in deep x 33in high)Footnotes:ProvenanceF.E. Anderson & Son.John Cobb (1715-1778) worked in premises at 72 St Martin's Lane, London. Little documentation exists regarding his early life. He completed his apprenticeship in 1736 entering into partnership with William Vile in 1751 and taking over the firm upon Vile's retirement in 1764. In 1755 the firm had expanded taking over the neighbouring St Martin's Lane premises of William Hallett (d.1781). By this time Cobb himself held very much a managerial role and was primarily concerned with design and quality control. In 1761 Cobb was granted a royal warrant to supply furniture to the crown under the direction of the Great Wardrobe. In 1755 he married Sukey Grendey, the daughter of the prominent cabinet-maker Giles Grendey. He took the firm in a new direction specialising in marquetry and introducing new woods for inlay such as harewood, burr-yew and fruitwoods. A comparable commode of similar outline was sold Bonhams, London, Fine English Furniture Sale, 13 June 2012, lot 53. A commode of the same model as lot 53 was supplied by Cobb to James West of Alscot Park, Warwickshire in 1766 and was described as: 'extra fine wood commode chest of drawers with large handsome wrought furniture, good brass locks etc - £16 (illustrated in H. Honour, Cabinet Makers and Furniture Designers, London, 1969, p.112).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A George III mahogany breakfront secretaire bookcase1785-1800, probably by GillowsThe ogee moulded cornice above four segmented lancet astragal glazed panelled doors, enclosing seven short and four long adjustable shelves, over a mahogany lined secretaire drawer enclosing a leather inset slide with a central adjustable hinged ratcheted writing surface, with a central open compartment below, flanked by six hinged lidded compartments each inlaid with a central ivory oval tablet engraved with alphabetical lettering, above a pair of re-entrant panelled doors with turned roundel angles, enclosing one shelf, flanked by two conforming doors enclosing three shelves, on a moulded plinth base, approximately: 212cm wide x 62cm deep x 244cm high, (83in wide x 24in deep x 96in high)Footnotes:Inside the secretaire drawer of the offered lot is a distinctive arrangement of neat hinged lidded compartments which are each inlaid with a central ivory oval tablet engraved with letters in sequence, which altogether comprise the entirety of the alphabet. This is often a recurrent element of similar case furniture, but especially kneehole desks, which were made by Gillows during the period, 1785-1810. This element, combined with the overall design and high quality in the construction of the present bookcase, raises the distinct possibility that it was a production of this renowned cabinet making firm. The item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10). A George III harewood, purplewood, fruitwood inlaid and marquetry card table of large proportionsCirca 1775With ebonised and boxwood stringing, the hinged top inlaid with an alternating pattern of rosettes, palmettes and paterae within a network of interlaced oval and shaped tablets, enclosing a baize playing surface, above a flute inlaid frieze interspersed with four angles mounted with pressed gilt brass beaded ovals each in the form of a Neoclassical urn, on cylindrical tapering and flute inlaid legs headed by rosettes and ribbon tied garlands, terminating in beaded acanthus sabots with castors, approximately: 108cm wide x 53cm deep x 76.5cm high, (42 1/2in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 30in high)Footnotes:Some smaller format of tables (such as side, pier and card tables), dating to the 1770s, which have related marquetry to that of the present lot, including flowers or stylised foliage set within either lozenge or cube trellis inlay, have typically been attributed to the workshop of John Cobb. One example of such a table, which is ascribed to Cobb, appears illustrated in G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, 1987, Oxford, fig. 4, p. 167. Although perhaps what is most distinctive about the offered model is its elegant flute inlaid frieze and legs which arguably appear more redolent of the work of the renowned Ince and Mayhew cabinet making partnership, and especially their output from the 1770s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Several examples of pieces of furniture which date to the late 19th century are known to bear labels, plates and stamps that are in line with the metal plaques present on the offered chairs.
