AnonGERMAN PRISONER OF WAR WOODEN CASKETBaviaanspoort: Pretoria District, 194015 by 9 by 7cmThe fitted lid of this highly polished casket has an inset map of Africa and the script legend `Internierungslager Bavriaanspoort 1940`. Clearly the maker was an expert in cabinet making: the close-fitting lid with raised internal edges indicate this. In the box are two original photographs of the owner. The one in First World War Uniform with the ribbon of the Iron Cross and a passport size photo in civilian dress. At the outbreak of World War II all German`s living in the Union of South Africa were interned. The largest holding area for Germans, whose loyalty to the Government was in doubt, was situated at Baviaanspoort north of Pretoria. Such items are seldom offered for sale. (1)
