Nach seiner Rückkehr aus der amerikanischen Kriegsgefangenschaft zieht er sich von 1945 bis 1948 in sein Atelier zurück, experimentiert und sucht nach neuen Ausdrucksformen. Diese Zeit läutet seine zweite künstlerische Phase ein. Es entstehen Werke, die eine deutliche Auflockerung der konstruktiven Farb- und Formelemente der 20er und 30er Jahre aufweisen. Diese neue Freiheit der Form entwickelt sich in den darauffolgenden Jahren um 1952/53 zum Informel hin und gibt diesem wesentliche Impulse. Buchheister zählt zu den Wegbereitern der abstrakten Malerei in Deutschland. Seine Werke sind in zahlreichen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten, u.a. in der Tate Gallery, London; der Nationalgalerie Berlin; dem Salomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NY sowie dem Nationalmuseum of Modern Art in Tokio.
