A James I oak and japanned cabinet, with painted chinoserie decoration with a black ground in silver and gilt, the pedimented top with a hinged panelled cover and a panelled front and sides, above a pair of rectangular doors, painted to the inside and revealing a central door and eight drawers, the top concealing secret drawers, gesso wood handles, the front with a gilt ground and traces of scroll decoration, English or Dutch circa 1620, 28.5in (72.5cm) h, 24.5in (62cm) w, 11.25in (28.5cm) h, on a later stand. Similar examples are illustrated in Ralph Edwards, Dictionary of English Furniture, 1953, p.162, fig.1 and Christopher Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1978, Vol.1, p.47, no.33.
