This desk is pictured in R.W. Symonds book, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks (B.T.Batsford, 1940) page 41 fig. 29 where it is also confirmed as being part of the collection of Lord Plender, G.B.E. For several related designs of Commode Dressing Tables or 'Buroe' dressing tables see Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, Third edition, 1762, (Reprinted by John Tiranti Ltd, 1939) Plate LXII Lord Plender of Sundridge was a distinguished collector of English furniture and a close friend of R. W. Symonds, the preeminent furniture historian who published widely on the subject in the early 20th century. Plender, along with J.S. Sykes, Eric Moller, Samuel Messer, Percival Griffiths, Geoffrey Blackwell, and Jim Joel formed the most notable and esteemed group of English furniture collectors under Symonds guidance. Symonds featured pieces of Plender s collection in his publication Old English Walnut and Lacquer Furniture (London, 1923) and his seminal text Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks (London, 1940) Symonds also wrote several articles about Plender s collection, including a feature article in Apollo in 1931 entitled Furniture in the Collection of Lord Plender (vol. XIV, no. 83).
