Art Deco sideboard, France, ca.1920.Rosewood and marble.Measurements: 100 x 120 x 41 cm.French sideboard in the Art Deco style, as shown by its elegant and attractive design with a geometrical body but at the same time softened by rounded corners. The stylised lines of the metal keyholes and handles harmonise with the design of the cabinet. The interior is compartmentalised with double shelves. The top is in marble.

Lot 117

18th century Catalan wardrobe.Walnut wood and marquetry. The crockery inside (visible in the photograph) is not included in the lot.Measurements: 275 x 174 x 60 cm.Cabinet framed within the Catalan Baroque style, made in walnut wood with a panelled structure which is reflected on the outside in a rich moulding work, in great relief, typical of Baroque furniture throughout Europe. This decoration is combined with marquetry designs. The front is opened by two doors separated by a wide panel. Both are decorated with a large marquetry vase. The lower part has two drawers, while a panel also decorated with marquetry and a typically Baroque mixtilinear crest crowns the piece. At the end of the 17th century, the cupboard became the representative piece of furniture par excellence, conceived almost as a monument rather than a functional piece of furniture. In fact, it was between about 1675 and 1725 that the so-called Golden Age of the wardrobe took place throughout Europe. These pieces of furniture now formed part of the decoration of the great salons, as showpieces. The end of this golden age came with the rise of the chest of drawers from around 1725, when a horizontal rather than a vertical piece of furniture was sought after. The wardrobe of this period evolved from 16th century models in the mannerist style. It would also be a piece of monumental proportions, something that would be increasingly noticeable throughout Europe: progressively taller cupboards, with larger feet and more prominent reliefs (carvings, mouldings or turned pieces), more exaggerated cornices, etc. In fact, in the later cabinets we will even find decorations on the cornice, in the manner of a coping, as well as façade structures defined by Baroque architectural elements, something that is already noticeable here, although not in a particularly evident way.

Lot 125

Eighteenth century sacristy furniture.Walnut wood.Measurements: 175 x 127 x 63 cm.Spanish sacristy cabinet decorated with carvings and simple carvings, with a structure of architectural inspiration. It has two bodies, the lower one divided into four drawers, the last one narrower, arranged with metal handles and horseshoe-shaped shields. The corners are chamfered and decorated with pilasters. The upper body, set back from the lower one, has two front doors that conceal different shelves and recesses inside. The piece of furniture is crowned with an openwork mixtilinear coping, with a central veneration.

Lot 67

Mazarino bureau-desk. Italy, 19th century.Jacaranda wood and details in ebonised wood.Marquetry of bone and mother-of-pearl.In need of refinishing. It has remains of ancient xylographs. The keys are not conserved.Measurements: 107 x 146 x 67 cm.As is characteristic of this type of Italian furniture, in the Mazarino bureau the wood is profusely decorated with inlaid marquetry in bone and mother-of-pearl. It is a typology derived from Louis XIV furniture, which in turn was based on Italian designs. The nineteenth-century piece in question is a revival of the baroque language. The double frame of the older models is replaced here by cut-out crosspieces that join the four legs on each side of the desk. The legs, with an inverted truncated pyramid section, support the desk, which has six drawers in a symmetrical arrangement. The concave front gives the desk a dynamic, baroque-inspired look that harmonises with the mixtilinear profile of the ebonised wood uprights. The small drawers in the upper body also have a slightly convex front. All the drawers are inlaid with bone marquetry in keyhole escutcheons flanked by mythological griffins. Olympian gods and heroic figures, among other mythological scenes, decorate the top and sides of the cabinet, set in borders, ovals and niches. The bone marquetry is completed with mother-of-pearl inlay.

Lot 99

Design by ANTONI GAUDÍ (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926).Calvet" armchair.Oak wood.BD edition. Production ca.1985.Wear and tear. Some damage to the wood of the seat.Model exhibited in "Objects of Desire. Surrealism and design, 1924-2020", La Caixa.Measurements: 96 x 65 x 60 cm.The "Calvet" chair is an original design by Gaudí from 1902, re-edited by BD and produced by hand, with the same original materials and all the richness of detail with which the originals were made in their day. It is a chair with curved, fluid, natural and soft lines, with a small backrest reminiscent of the central balconies on the back façade of the Casa Calvet. It is a simple, comfortable piece of furniture intended to form part of the modernist office of the house. The Casa Calvet on Carrer Casp in Barcelona was the first housing project built by the Catalan architect, which was recognised by Barcelona City Council with the prize for the best building of 1900. Two years later, in 1902, Gaudí designed the oak furniture for the offices on the ground floor. They were originally manufactured by the firm Casa y Bardés and are now kept in the Gaudí Museum in Park Güell. The greatest representative of Catalan and, therefore, Spanish modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. He studied architecture at the Llotja School and the Barcelona School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1878. With his first major commission, the Casa Vicens, he began to make a name for himself and to attract increasingly important commissions. In 1878, he exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris a display cabinet made for the Comella glove shop. This piece, which was both modernist in design and functional, impressed the industrialist Eusebi Güell, a key figure in Gaudí's artistic biography from then on. In fact, Güell was not only Gaudí's great friend, but also his main patron, and commissioned some of his most outstanding works, such as the Parc Güell. In 1883 he accepted the commission to continue the work on the Sagrada Família; Gaudí completely modified the initial project, and this building became his masterpiece, on which he worked until the day he died. This project was followed by other important commissions, such as the episcopal palace of Astorga, the Batlló and Milá houses and the restoration of the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. In 1910 the first exhibition dedicated to Gaudí was held at the Grand Palais in Paris. After his death, important retrospectives of the architect were held, including the one at MoMA in New York, his first major international exhibition, which took place in 1957. Gaudí's designs for furniture and decorative arts can now be admired at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the MOMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as at his House-Museum in Park Güell.

Grande pépite d'ambre vert fluorescent Large, Fluorescent Green Amber NuggetHymanea mexicanaOligocene Chiapas, MexicoChiapas Amber is fossilized resin from the now extinct tree species, Hymanea mexicana which flourished some 23 to 30 million years ago. These giants of the forest released copious amounts of sap trapping insects, flowers and leaves in the sticky resin that flowed. Originally discovered by the Mayans, this amber was valued so much as to be included in their inventory scrolls.
