GERMAN EDWARD: (1862-1936) English Composer & Musician. A.L.S., Edward German, to the verso of a postcard photograph of the composer in a half length pose and featuring a printed quotation from Shepherds' Dance to the lower border, n.p., n.d., to [Irene Lalonde]. The composer writes, in full, 'I regret that I am unable to sign this photograph: its publication is not authorized. Should you get a different one I should be most pleased to sign it for you'. Together with a second A.L.S., Edward German, one page, 8vo, St. John's Wood, London, 2nd May 1911, to [Irene Lalonde]. German writes, in full, 'As I am unable to sign the photo you sent, & considering the particular occasion for which you desire it, I am sending a different signed photograph for your acceptance in place of it.' With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the photograph referred to, being a very fine vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph of German seated in a three quarter length pose. Photograph by Alfred Ellis & Walery of Baker Street, London, and bearing their imprint to the lower mount and verso. Signed by German in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower photographer's mount. Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso. Also including a vintage signed sepia postcard photograph by the British pianist, conductor and composer Frederic H. Cowen, the image depicting him in a half length pose, signed in dark fountain pen ink to a clear area at the head of the image, and further including a fountain pen ink signature by the English violinist Marie Hall on a piece, dated 22nd February 1905 in her hand, neatly laid down.  ROWLING J. K.: (1965-     ) British Novelist of the Harry Potter series of fantasy novels. A.L.S., Jo, on two sides of her personal printed correspondence card featuring a blue embossed facsimile signature at the head and a gold embossed image of the owl Hedwig beneath, n.p., 18th January 2008, to Marie Skuse. Rowling thanks her correspondent for their kind words regarding a documentary and for a comment on Winterbourne 'which made me laugh!' and further encloses a signed photograph for her correspondent's disabled group. Accompanied by the original envelope. Together with a signed colour 6 x 8 photograph of Rowling, the image depicting her seated in a full length pose in a large armchair before a wooden panelled cabinet. Signed ('J K Rowling') in bold black ink with her name alone at the head of the image. VG to EX, 2 Winterbourne is a large village in South Gloucestershire where Rowling lived as a young child. It is reported that Potter's surname was inspired by some of her friends in the village.

FRANZ FERDINAND: (1863-1914) Archduke of Austria-Este, heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne. The Archduke's assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 triggered a series of catastrophic events which led to the start of World War I. A rare, large vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph (5.5 x 8.5), the image depicting the young Archduke in a head and shoulders pose wearing a military uniform. Photograph by Atelier Adele of Vienna and bearing their imprint to the lower photographer's mount and verso. Signed by the Archduke in dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the base of the image. Framed and glazed in the original green leather presentation frame bearing an applied silver coloured metal Archducal coat of arms and with the gilt stamped maker's mark of A. Forster of Vienna to the verso. Some light age wear to the photograph, largely to the borders of the photographer's mount, and the upper edge very slightly irregularly trimmed. Some light overall age wear and damage to the frame, G Atelier Adele had been founded by Adele Perlmutter-Heilperin and her two brothers, Max and Wilhelm, in Vienna in 1862. The studio was named photographer to the Imperial Court in around 1890. Signed photographs of Archduke Franz Ferdinand rarely appear at auction and this example is only the second we have offered in almost a decade. American Book Prices Current record only five other examples being sold at auction, some of them from prominent collections including those of Rev. Cornelius Greenaway, M. Wesley Marans and Jerome Shochet.

Vintage signed postcard photograph of Roberts standing in a formal full length pose wearing his uniform and medals. Signed (‘Roberts FM’) in fountain pen ink to the image, the conclusion of the signature with slightly weaker contrast. Some heavy surface and corner creasing and light age wear. Together with George Luck (1840-1916) British General, Commander-in-Chief, Bengal Command, 1898-1903. Vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph of Luck in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform and medals. Photograph by Johnston Hoffmann of Calcutta.
