A Norwegian Empire style mahogany work table by Bendix Nicolai Plesner, Cabinet Maker of Skien, Norway, the rectangular top with inlaid lines and hinged lid opening onto compartments and a central tray. This with the manuscript maker's label. The fluted vase pedestal on a concave quadruple base with leaf-carved scrolls and claw carved feet. Width 10 3/4ins., height 28 1/2ins. This table was purchased by a Gweek (Helston) timber trader, Francis Johns (1779-1855). He bought two from Norway for each of his daughters. Plesner was born in 1804. (See illustrations)

An Art Deco burr maple cocktail cabinet possibly by Hille, drum form, with bakelite handles, the interior with glass shelves, mirror back and lighting, with extending serving tray to front unsigned, 68 inches (173 cm) high, 51 inches (130 cm) wide. Provenance: Applied Arts from 1880, Sotheby's London 17th June 1988 lot 381.
A fine Gordon Russell English walnut extending refectory table dated 5th August 1928, model no.5643, by cabinet makers Bert Jones and Reg France, plank top with twelve chevron carved pillar legs applied paper label to underside, 120 inches (305 cm) long (closed), with two additional extending leaves 36 inches (91 cm) wide . Provenance: Applied Arts from 1880, Sotheby's 17th June 1988, lot 345. Literature: J.C Rogers Modern English Furniture Country Life, page 179 for a comparable table illustrated in bog oak.
A late nineteenth century oak architectural high backed settee probably American, the articulated arms dropping to form a bed, with raised wool work upholstery 75 inches (190cm) wide. In a letter dated 1990, Century Antiques of Warminster noted a comparable looking top illustrated in Deutsch Moebel Verlagen, 1989, illustration 3327 by a German cabinet maker working in America.
