Around 35 Large Format Edwardian Glass Stereo Positives, Featuring Climbing, Cycling & Welsh Views. To include Swallow & Aber Falls, Betlws-y-Coed, Shropshire and surrounds etc, with some Lake District, Ambleside, Stock Gill etc, several with human interest. Each bound slide is approx half plate (actual size is 6 1/2" x 4 1/4"). The captioned stereo pairs being masked down to a variety of formats depending on composition. Probably by a gifted amateur photographer with a mix of exposures, mostly very good to excellent with several coloured tones ranging from pure black & white, through sepia to some marked "gold toned". All in fitted wooden box. (Cabinet L)
Uncommon Stereo Collodion Image on Glass, Statues of Osiris, Egyptian Court, Crystal Palace. Circa mid 1850s. Photographer unknown. Applied label 'Carpenter & Westley, Opticians, 24 Regent St, London' to rear. Original binding starting to breakdown along bottom and side edge, image clear. (condition 4). (Cabinet L)
Oval Framed Stereo Daguerreotype of a Palissy Ware Style Dish. Probably by Louis Jules Duboscq-Soleil (1817-1886). Some damage under glass to background and slight 'rainbow' type discolouration to extreme edge of one image. Slight lifting of binding to edge, probably re-mounted. (condition 5/6). Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. (Cabinet L)
A Pair of Stereo Daguerreotypes of John Bell Statues at the Crystal Palace. 'Andromeda'* with applied label 'Carpenter & Westley, Opticians, 24 Regent St, London' to rear. Also 'Dorothea', with an applied 'Negretti & Zambra' label to rear. Inscribed 'Dorothea, Crystal Palace' in a contemporary hand. (both condition 5). Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. *Interestingly, the text on the plinth in this image reads the correct way round, which is 'wrong' for a normal daguerreotype. This could possibly be explained by it being an uncommon copy but there are references to daguerreotype photographers shooting through a mirror or prism to correct the reversed image. Either way, a rare 'conversation piece'. (Cabinet L)
A Pair of Stereo Daguerreotypes of Statues. One showing a pair of 'Greek slave' style statues (one probably a copy of an H Powers statue). Applied label 'Carpenter & Westley, Opticians, 24 Regent St, London' to rear and the number 31 in red, top left corner. (condition 5). The other showing a sculpture of a nymph or goddess with an eagle. Probably remounted as shows some surface cleaning marks, but still views nicely. (condition 5/6). Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. (Cabinet L)
Stereo Daguerreotype of Una & The Lion Statue at the Crystal Palace. John Bell’s sculpture at the Crystal Palace was a very popular exhibit and there are several similar stereo images showing it in slightly differing positions. This version being the closer of them all, with less of the plinth showing than the others. By an unknown photographer. (vendor thinks possibly by T R Williams, while on-line resources suggest the possibility of either T R Williams or William England, with similar images by London Stereoscopic Company). Slight discolouration to right hand image, otherwise condition 5. With an applied 'Negretti & Zambra' label to rear. Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. (Cabinet L)
RARE 'Memento Mori' Style Stereo Daguerreotype. Photographer unknown. Image shows a monk seated alongside a table and surrounded with various religious (allegorical?) items, including a skull, bible, crucifix, rosary beads, etc suggesting one's life span is finite. Appears to have been remounted. Left hand image shows slight damage/discolouration at the bottom. Very difficult to photograph so the images shown may not do justice to the item - viewing in person is recommended. (Cabinet L)
