He returned to Bury St Edmunds on the death of his father and took over the family business as a photographer, carver, gilder and artist in 1870. As well as developing and expanding the business and participating in local affairs, Spanton kept up his painting and links with the art world, in particular a friendship with pre-Rapahelite artist Charles Fairfax Murray. Spanton's growing family included his daughter Helen Margaret who became an artist and keen suffragette. Spanton sold the family business and negatives to fellow local photographer Harry Isaac Jarman in 1901 before returning to London.
