A mahogany and sycamore marquetry oval tray in George III Hepplewhite style, 19th century, the central patera with bellflower surround, within a border of conjoined scrolling foliage and bellflower swags, with scalloped edging and foliate cast metal handle at each end, 4cm high, 66cm long, 42cm wide Note: The decorative scheme of this tray is virtually identical to one appearing in A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788, plate 59. However, in that design the tray is of simple oval form. The adjacent design for a tray in the Guide though is of an oval example with a specifically scalloped edge, as in the lot offered here. So both shape and design appear side by side in the Guide, but not in the same tray as they do in this lot
