Photograph by Atelier Langhans of Marienbad. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the head of the image, with an inscription in German and French, `A mein liber Freund Heinrich Grunfeld, Souvenir de bonne et loyale amitie, R. Leoncavallo` Dated in the composer`s hand Marienbad, 17th July 1894. To a light area of the background at the right of the image Leoncavallo has boldly penned a musical quotation of two bars which he identifies as being from Bajazzo (the German name of Pagliacci, the quotation being for cello from Pagliacci`s aria Vesta la Giubba, sung by Canio at the close of the first act). A fine signed portrait, enhanced with a musical quotation from the composer`s most famous opera, and with an interesting association.
