The Property of a Private Collector A carved armchair George III, circa 1785 mahogany, the oval beaded back carved with Prince of Wales feathers the underside of the chair bearing a paper label `LEEDS CITY ART GALLERY/ AND/ TEMPLE NEWSAM HOUSE EXHIBITION/ Lacn 1952, Lady Martin'; partially re-railed Provenance Lady Martin. Exhibited Leeds City Art Gallery and Temple Newsam House Exhibition, 1952 George Hepplewhite's Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer's Guide (London, 1st edition, 1788) illustrates a chair similar to the present lot. The carved feathers are the emblem of the Prince of Wales (later George IV), who, having been granted a huge yearly allowance by Parliament in 1781, led the taste of fashionable London at the time. A pair of related chairs is illustrated in Moss Harris and Sons 1868-1968, London, 1968, p.41. W
