Lot 3218
A quantity of 18th century baby clothes, including a partial layette, consisting of a mid 18th century fine satin silk christening gown, with rows of fine pleating at front, fringing around hem, neckline and in a double row down the front of gown, lined with ivory silk, in excellent condition. A long fustian vest, sleeveless, with ribbon tape shoulder straps and fastenings and two fustian caps. Four plain lawn shirts, two appear to be unworn, all exquisitely worked, one with exceptionally fine repairs and darning.3 x thick cotton bellybands or baby binders 65cm x 8cm, a pair of fine cotton sateen, lace trimmed bibs with ribbon neck ties and and secondary ties at the bottom end of bib. Length 17cm x 11cm. Two pairs of sleeves and two odd sleeves, shortest pair 15.5cm long x 8cm at widest point, larger pair: 18cm long x 8.5cmTwo square pillow shams with hand written label; 'Pillow cases used on Christening Days-'All with further handwritten label: '17th Century (sic) baby clothes worn by the Rogers' family-'.Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall. Late 18th century or early 19th century baby clothes. Two plain white long cotton infant's petticoats with very finely worked smocking, open backed, two others with lace and embroidery inserts and rows of pleats around the hem. One open backed chemise with short frilled sleeves and embroidered front panel (a raw edge along waistband would indicate it has been cut from a longer garment), all exquisitely worked. A pair of George III finely knitted cream wool stockings, total length 55cm, length of foot 19cm, circumference at top 28cm, one crudely embroidered in red 'Elizabeth knit by my mother'. An early 19th century sheer white muslin gown with lace details and whitework embroidery around the hem. Fabric or lace has been removed from the sleeves, although an accompanying pair of fine lace embellished cuffs with hollie-point inserts, could be the missing elements.
