* Santos-Dumont (Alberto, 1873-1932). A rare painted plaster caricature figurine of Santos-Dumont, looking slightly downwards with hands raised so as to grip the rim of the original wicker work balloon basket, with orig. suspension strings, c. 1910, the figurine shows Santos-Dumont dressed in familiar brown double-breasted jacket with high collar shirt and tie, with orig. straw boater (somewhat dust soiled), approx. 6in (15cm) tall, some old damage. Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932) was a Brazilian early pioneer of aviation. He designed, built and flew the first practical dirigible balloons. In doing so he became the first person to demonstrate that routine, controlled flight was possible. This “conquest of the air”, in particular winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize on October 19, 1901 on a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower, made him a celebrity in Europe and throughout the world. He won several more prizes and became a friend to millionaires, aviation pioneers, and royalty. The public eagerly followed his daring exploits. Parisians affectionately dubbed him le petit Santos. The fashionable folk of the day mimicked various aspects of his style of dress from his high collared shirts to singed Panama hat. He was, and remains to this day, a prominent folk hero in his native Brazil. (1)

(56 x 56cm) This very early marking on German aeroplanes is likely to have been removed from an aeroplane downed or captured in the period 1914-1915 as it is painted on white or cream canvas, and was soon superseded by camouflage or other coloured fabric covering to airframes; the cross also changed with an additional black border surround. * American Flying Jacket. A rare early World War II 1st American Volunteer Group (A.V.G.) leather flying jacket, the breast and upper arms sewn with decorated and woven circular and shield-shaped badges with the emblem of this clandestine group, size unknown, no name tab, a complete and most historic piece of flying clothing, the back sewn with a ‘blood chit’, with Chinese Republic flag over an inscription in Chinese which translated reads; ‘This foreign person has come to China to help in the war effort. Soldiers and civilians, one and all, should rescue and protect him.’ The 1st American Volunteer Group (A.V.G.) “The Flying Tigers” was established, with the approval of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, by Claire L. Chennault, a retired U.S. Army Air Corps. officer, for the purpose of helping to defend China from the Japanese. Chennault had been an advisor to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek in 1937 and was director of the Chinese Flying Training School at Kunming, so he became the natural choice to lead this new unit. Pay for pilots, ground-crews and administrators was well above the then going rate and very soon after the establishment the A.V.G. had assembled 100 pilots and perhaps 200 supporting engineers and administrators. During the winter of 1940-41 Chennault oversaw the purchase of 100 Curtiss P-40s which were diverted from Royal Air Force order; a few ruffled feathers then perhaps? Once they arrived in Burma the aircraft were assembled and flown on test by pilots of the Central Aircraft Manufacturing Co. before being handed over to the A.V.G.. Decorated with a shark’s nose and mouth these P-40s in the hands of the volunteers accounted for themselves with honour. Many raiding Japanese aircraft were destroyed during the defence of Rangoon, the three Flying Tiger Squadrons “Adam & Eve”, “Panda Bears” and “Hell’s Angels” remained operational, with considerable difficulty until the end of the Burma campaign in July 1942. Literature: Numerous publications and reference works are available via the Sino-American Heritage Foundation, Annals of The Flying Tigers and other publications. See lot 108 in this catalogue for an illustration of the Flying Tigers P-40. (1)
