Preclassic Maya seated whistle figure, Chalchuapa type, 500-200 BCE, Buff earthenware, solid and hollow sections, hand- modeled with applique, incising and punctate technique. 6.50"H. Mint condition with excellent sound Provenance: ex-Erasmo Toledo, Coral Gables FL; ex Chuck Warren, Coconut Grove FL, 1970's; ex Arte Xibalba, SRQ, FL; ex B. Dieterly, Homosassa springs , FL This is a unique, solid buff clay figure. The androgynous, child-like seated figure shows a pair of feline ears at the top of it's head along with fang-shaped projections at each shoulder and indicates the Chalchuapa Maya culture maintained the infant-jaguar connection which was a hallmark of both the earlier Olmec and later Classic Maya periods in Mesoamerica. The whistle mechanism is fully functional and emits a clear, somewhat breathy single note tone. A rare and exceptional example of a seated Olmecoid, Preclassic Maya 'baby' type figure. - Be aware that this item is being remotely consigned and we will assist with arranging shipping directly from the client, will be shipped from zip code (43950)
Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Mandarinfish" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Federated States of Micronesia 40c Mandarinfish Native Fish stamp issued August 26, 1993. The channel reefs and lagoons of Pohnpei and Truk provide ideal habitats for the striking Bleeker's Parrotfish. During the evening hours, this colorful species rests under ledges or up against the coral and rock found in these Micronesian waters. Another inhabitant of this area is the Mandarinfish. Also called a dragonet, this creature possesses a scaleless body covered with an intricate pattern of many hues. Its distinctive coloration makes the Mandarinfish a popular choice for aquariums. The Bluebanded Surgeonfish is also found in private tanks throughout the world. In captivity the male is known to be territorial and aggressive. This behavior is a result of the Surgeonfish's instinct to protect its harem of females and the area in which they breed. When provoked, the Great Barracuda will also become hostile. This species is responsible for more documented assaults on divers than any other Micronesian fish. However, it is also believed that the Barracuda often mistakes shiny objects on its human victim for prey. In clear waters, Barracuda attacks are rare. Image Size: 12 x 16 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 23 in. Unframed. (B14414)
