8th-10th century AD. A bronze vessel and suspension chain comprising: a sheet bronze container or cauldron formed from three separate rivetted panels, waisted profile with rolled rim, domed base, tinned interior, one circumferential and two vertical reinforcing bands at the joints, applied iron plates beneath the rim on each side each with a median iron hoop projecting above the rim, flat-section curved handle with returned and scrolled ends; the suspension chain of twenty six iron links, each waisted in profile and twisted, a flat-section hook, two decorative lower distributors with two links between, flat-section suspension hook with bull-head finial and lateral twisted bars, additional meat-hook or suspension hook with three spurs, twisted ring. See Carver, M. Sutton Hoo. A Seventh Century Princely Burial Ground and its Context, London, 2005 for discussion. 4.5 kg total, chain: 248cm overall, cauldron: 29cm at the handle (11 1/2 - 97 1/2"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. There are parallels for the bronze cauldron from across northern Europe, most notably from the 7th century ship burial in Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England (Carver, 2005"). The waisted profile of the present piece is unusual for such a vessel, but the rounded underside is a common feature. The chain is an elaborate item, again similar to the example from Sutton Hoo although shorter. [No Reserve] Fine condition. Very rare.

An exceptionally rare 1920s Burgess & Leigh (Burleigh Ware) wall plaque, designed by Charlotte Rhead in the 4111 pattern, having a tube-lined decoration of an ornately dressed lady in profile, holding a bunch of grapes in front a parrot, the wings of the bird forming part of the border decoration. It is highly probable that Charlotte herself completed the decoration of this plaque, given the intricacy and quality of the tube-lining. The subject appears to have been copied from a painted design by Louis Swettenham for Burgess & Leigh, dating from 1921. Swettenham had previously worked for Doulton and Mintons. The plaque bears an L (for Lottie) Rhead signature in Charlotte's own hand, 42.5cm diameter Condition Report: Firing crack to one of the hanging holes versoCrazing evident on close inspectionNo other damage or restoration

1 bottle of Exceptionally Rare Triple Distilled Talisker Isle of Skye Malt believed to be from pre 1928 (the year 'triple distilling' ceased) We believe this bottle dates back to approximately 1900 (1898 - 1916) and carries the Dailuaine-Talisker Crest Label of that period). The intact reverse label bears reference to supply to the "Royal" Army, Triple distillation and Distillery manager W.G. Allan. Talisker Distillery have advised that the reverse label had been used until 1934 however the crimped capsule suggests this bottle pre-dates the later era. G. Allan took over in 1892. Three years later, Allan's trustees assigned the lease to The Talisker Distillery Co. Ltd. That company merged in 1898 with The Dailuaine Distillery Co. Ltd to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd. Thomas Mackenzie, DL, JP, became the managing director, and a major shareholder, of the new company. It extended the premises in 1900. Mackenzie's death led in 1916 to the acquisition of a majority interest in the company by a consortium consisting of John Dewar & Sons Ltd., W. P. Lowrie & Company Ltd. (a subsidiary of James Buchanan & Company Ltd.), The Distillers Company Limited and John Walker & Sons Ltd. With the merger of all of these companies in 1925 under the name of The Distillers Company Limited, Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd. became a subsidiary of that company. The triple distillation ceased in 1928, however triple distilled whisky remained in stock for a further 10 - 12 years.

The ex Pip Harris 1951 Norton 596 Manx 30M/Watsonian racing motorcycle combination, frame number E11M35893, engine number D11M22055, silver and black. In the post WWII years the likes of Eric Oliver and Peter Valentine (Pip) Harris enjoyed just as high a profile with their combinations as their contemporary solo stars. Pip had great success in both the world championship and British short circuit racing over a 25 year career piloting Norton, Vincent and BMW combinations with his highest finish in the worlds a third in 1956. This Norton Manx was despatched to Pip on 3 March 1951 and according to the Norton factory records was supplied with a 500cc 30M engine, a rigid frame and girder forks. Now 596cc fitted the DOHC engine will have been one of two engines used by Pip in the 1951 season. A 500cc limit was stipulated for the World Championships but there was no such restriction for British domestic racing, hence competitors would have one frame and two engines. This ex Harris Manx was purchased from the estate of the late Reg Dearden, one of the most famous of all Norton tuner/entrants, by the late Eric Biddle of Horwich near Bolton. The ex Dearden Nortons were assembled for Eric Biddle by Kerry Kearton who was paid in surplus bikes and parts. One of the machines Kearton received was the ex Harris combination, which our vendor brought from him in the early 1970s. It was subsequently restored in the 1990s and was then displayed at The National Motor Museum Beaulieu for many years, all be it unfortunately mistakenly identified and attributed to Eric Oliver. The renowned Norton historian Dr George Cohen identified this Manx as having been supplied new to Pip 'The King of Drift'. Now requiring careful recommissioning, this rare and historically significant racing outfit would provide the new fortunate owner with the opportunity to participate in some of motorcyclings most prestigious historic events such as Les Coupes Moto Legende at Dijon, Bikers Classics at Spa Francorchamps and the ever popular Festival of 1000 Bikes at Mallory Park. The historic Manx will be offered for auction with sundry paperwork. See illustrations
