1869 Visit to India by Prince Alfred: a good and particularly rare cylindrical mug with domed cover by E & C Challinor printed in green with a portrait entitled 'Welcome' flanked by inscriptions 'To Commemorate the Visit of Our Esteemed Sailor Prince' and 'Alfred Second Son of Our Beloved Queen Victoria, God Bless Her', the knop of the top printed with a compass, the underside with makers mark, 120mm high (2). * Whilst the portrait and title are not dissimilar to that produced for Prince Alfred’s return from the West Indies in 1861 (see Victoria Remembered, plate 265), the ship, foliage, flags and inscription all differ. The firm of Challinor used the initials E & C in their mark from 1862 until 1891. Prince Alfred, a keen sailor, undertook two cruises on his yacht ‘Galatea’ between 1866 and 1871. Towards the end of 1869, he commenced a three month tour of India. Upon the insistence of the Prince of Wales, he undertook this as a Prince and son of the Sovereign. 1833 Capt James Clark Ross’ Return Form the 1831 Expedition to the Magnetic North Pole: a very rare and thought to be previously unrecorded small pottery jug printed in blue with maritime scenes entitled ‘Travelling at the Pole’ and ‘Approaching the Isabella’, the neck inscribed ‘Captn Ross’, 125mm. * Ross sailed from London on 23rd May 1829 in Victory, a steamer with retractable paddles built in 1826 that had previously served as a ferry between Liverpool and the Isle of Man. On 1st June 1831 he became the first European to reach the Magnetic North Pole. Subsequently becoming marooned in the ice, the crew abandoned Victory. It was on 26th August 1833 that they were spotted by Isabella (the very ship that Ross had commanded in his previous 1818 First Arctic Expedition to discover a North West Passage). Returning to England in October 1833, three crew members having lost their lives, Ross by now a hero was presented to William IV and Knighted for his services. Notwithstanding this immense ordeal he set out again in 1850 at the age of 72 years to the Arctic, this time in search for Sir John Franklin, an expedition that was to prove fruitless. (commemorative, commemorating, maritime, exploration).

Lot 109

Georgian London’s Darker Side: a rare and most interesting colourful pearlware plate moulded with the façade of a town house coloured in pink lustre and enamels inscribed with the name ‘House of Lords’, circa 1820, 243mm, well restored crack to rim at two o’clock and around edge of well between ten and four o’clock.* In Georgian London prostitution was rife, houses of ill repute widespread and the sex industry flourished. This contemporary plate most probably cheekily draws a parallel between the House of Lord in Westminster and houses in fashionable Covent Gardens and other areas that were frequently visited by the aristocracy in pursuit of carnal pleasure. See ‘The Secret History of Georgian London’ by Dan Cruickshank for a commentary upon Georgian London’s sex industry.(commemorative, commemorating, satire).

See Drakard, plate 383. (commemorative, commemorating, naval, military, war, maritime).

An Anglo-Indian engraved ivory dressing box, Vizagapatam, late 18th Century, the rectangular lifting top opening to reveal an interior with twelve lidded boxes surrounding a larger box on bracket feet, decorated overall with extensive architectural wooded river landscapes with figures in punts within scrolling flowerhead borders (damages), 46cm wide, 36cm deep, 18cm highIvory registration reference: GKLN1XNE For a similar lot see Christie’s ‘The English Collector’, 3rd November 2011, Lot 157 Lot contains an element of pre-1947 ivory or other organic material which may be subject to export restrictions There are several small losses to the ivory veneers, including to the top, corners, sides and feet. There are also cracks to many of the ivory veneers ranging from faint hairlines to deeper more significant ones. The drawer to the lower front does not run that smoothly but it does have its original key, a rare survival.  The boxes within are in fair condition, three ends of the covers have come loose but the pieces for two of them are present with the lot.  There are some loose pieces of ivory in the central box, these may relate to the losses to the exterior of the main box.  The small boxes fit very snugly, the ivory does have some cracking but the main scenes of buildings are mainly unaffected, there are perhaps four where the cracks cross the decoration.  The easel back mirror has a very silvered glass but is otherwise in good condition.

Lot 496

A brand new cast aluminium 5ft Coalbrookdale Waterplant bench. Designed by Christopher Dresser, this is a very rare, brand new cast aluminium reproduction of this classic Victorian garden bench in black powder coating. The Coalbrookdale product catalogue of 1875 features the Waterplant bench on page 251. Dresser offered his own designs at the Universal Exhibition 1867, which included the 'Water Plant cast iron garden seat'. The bench and chair were also exhibited in Paris 1878, London in 1871 and in Vienna in 1873.The design was very unusual at the time, when most Victorian designs were a cacophony of ornamentation, Dresser rebelled and utilised the Waterplant form to convey a simplicity of outline. This accurate and high quality reproduction is cast in recycled aluminium. The bench has cross members and the end bolts are made of solid brass, just like the original. To eliminate any maintenance, the slats on this replica are made of solid cast aluminium. These slats are welded and riveted into an aluminium frame. Manufactured by Coalbrook Ltd.

Ø A FINE AND RARE WHALEBONE MODEL OF A WHALING SHIP, CIRCA 1820the 19in. hull with uninterrupted planks with copper pins, baleen sweep ports, scrimshaw-lined stern and quarter lights, marine ivory bust-length female figurehead, chainplates with marine ivory deadeyes, planked flush deck with simple details including winch with ratchet, scored hatch covers, belaying rails with pins, marine ivory capstan, carved helm with steering gear and compass box, whale tethering booms, three-section masts with standing and running rigging, bowsprit with dolphin striker and other details, loosely mounted on cradle stand to bone inlaid display base with baluster rails, contained within fine lunette glazed wooden display case, overall measurements -- 30 x 40 x 14in. (76 x 102 x 35.5cm) The Honourable Company of Master Mariners; Presented by F. E. Wilson in 1950. The planking is distinctive because only a whale can supply the length of bone needed to supply a single strake along the frames - by comparison, the more familiar models made by French prisoners of war using beef bone, have many short lengths. The other distinctive features are the two booms over the quarter lights, a feature unique to whalers as the whale carcass was too large to hoist aboard and had to be flensed whilst tethered alongside. This brought the additional advantage that unwanted fluids dispersed straight into the sea. This model also has masts made from single-turned lengths of bone, rather than being bound from a number of them, and sweep ports which are rarely seen, theoretically allowing a becalmed vessel to pursue a pod.models and base are both unsecured; rig later, several balurades loose, or re-secured, hull, fittings and mast in fine condition.
