A BRONZE FIGURE OF THE WILLOW-BRANCH GUANYIN, BHAISAJYARAJA AVALOKITESHVARA, DALI KINGDOM 大理國楊柳觀音銅像 China, Yunnan Province, 11th-12th century. Superbly cast standing on a double-lotus pedestal with beaded lower edge and foliage sprouting from the sides, her right hand raised holding a willow branch. She is richly adorned with an elaborate necklace and further beaded jewelry. Her serene face shows heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched brows, above full lips forming a calm smile. Her hair is pulled up into a high chignon behind the foliate tiara and falling elegantly in braided strands over the shoulders.Provenance: From the Collection R., Paris, France.Condition: The figure was broken in two pieces which have been reassembled, the hollow interior was reinforced accordingly, and the inside of the base has been resealed. Expected casting flaws, minor nicks and cracks, obvious losses, remnants of ancient gilt. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with distinct malachite and cuprite encrustations.Weight: 3,148 g Dimensions: Height 35.3 cm Created in the Dali Kingdom (937-1253), this sculpture and its congeners date to the late eleventh or early twelfth century. An independent, devoutly Buddhist kingdom in southwestern China, Dali was coeval with China's Song dynasty (907-1279) and more or less congruent with present-day Yunnan province. After the 902 fall of Nanzhao, an independent kingdom in southern China, and following the rapid rise and collapse of three successive states in the area, Duan Siping (893-944) seized power in 937 and established the dynastic Dali Kingdom. Unlike Nanzhao, which had had a contentious relationship with the Tang dynasty (618-907), Dali enjoyed cordial relations with the Song, which facilitated artistic and cultural exchange. Duan Siping, his heirs, and the people of Dali claimed to be ethnically Han Chinese, which facilitated relations with Song and which underlies the belief that Dali is a Chinese kingdom. In Chinese rather than in Indian iconographic conventions, images of Guanyin holding a willow branch and a vase are often termed Yangliu Guanyin, or Willow-Branch Guanyin. Images of the Willow-Branch Guanyin from the Dali Kingdom are sometimes also called Bhaisajyaraja Avalokiteshvara, a Sanskrit name that translates into Chinese as Yaowang, or Medicine King, a reference to the healing powers of the willow branch. Such images first appeared in the late 6th century, during the Sui dynasty (581-618), typically in gilt bronze. Thease early images established a typology that would be followed in later periods, particularly in the Dali Kingdom. The Sanskrit name Guanshiyin translates to '[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World,' a reference to Guanyin's ability to hear both the cries of the afflicted and the prayers of supplicants. An earthly manifestation of the Buddha Amitabha, Guanyin guards the world during the interval between the departure of the Historical Buddha Shakyamuni and the appearance of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. Chapter 25, Guanshiyin Pusa Pumenpin, of the Lotus Sutra, the best-known of all Buddhist scriptures, describes Guanyin as a compassionate bodhisattva who hears the cries of sentient beings and who works tirelessly to help all those who call upon his name.Literature comparison:Compare a related gilt-bronze figure of Avalokitesvara from the Dali Kingdom in the Museum fuer Ostasiatische Kunst, Cologne, Germany, illustrated in Fojiao Diaosu Mingpin Tulu (Images of Famous Buddhist Sculpture), Beijing, 1997, pp. 375, no. 355.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 22 March 2013, lot 1191 Price: USD 171,750 or approx. A RARE BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL, ZHI, SHANG DYNASTY, CHINA, 13TH-12TH CENTURY BC 西元前十三至十二世紀商代青銅觶 Of oval section, the S-profile body is cast in relief to each side with a powerful taotie mask, flanked by pairs of ascending kui dragons, and divided vertically by four notched flanges, all below a narrow band of confronting birds. The background with a remarkably crisp and well-preserved leiwen ground. The tall pedestal foot is cast with two pairs of mythical birds.Inscriptions: A clan sign is finely cast to the interior of the base. This sign resembles those on several vessels from Fu Hao's tomb (see Beijing 1980f., pl. 48), and also several vessels from Anyang, all dating from the 13th century. In more complete forms of this same sign, the yaxing frames a graph recognizable as the name of a diviner from Wu Ding's reign.Provenance: The present lot was part of an important collection of archaic Chinese bronzes, built by three generations of the Chasseloupe-Laubat family in France. Prosper de Chasseloup-Laubat (1805-1873), was a prominent aristocrat, politician, and art collector who became Minister of the French Navy and the Colonies under Napoleon III, traveling extensively through all of Asia. His son Louis (1863-1954), an engineer in ship design, significantly expanded the family collection, also during his frequent travels throughout Asia. François (1904-1968), Prosper's grandson, eventually inherited the family passion and became a renowned explorer and participant in the Hoggar Expedition. He was the first French explorer to reach English Malaysia, bringing back previously unpublished documents on the isolated Sakai tribes. As a collector, François Chasseloupe-Laubat was advised by Jean Claude Moreau-Gobard, an important French collector and dealer specializing in Asian art. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and expected casting flaws. Some traces of weathering, corrosion, minor dents and losses, shallow surface scratches. The solid, naturally grown patina has distinct malachite and cuprite encrustations.Weight: 983.7 g Dimensions: Height 14.5 cm Expert's note: On this elliptical zhi wine cup, the designing artisans went to great lengths to vary the motifs of the low-relief decoration found in the six horizontal registers on each side, which vary significantly, and yet as a group achieve superb stylistic harmony. The three pairs of mythical beasts differ in the treatment of their wings, horns, eyes and other features, and the varying distance between them, whereas the central taotie mask with its prominently raised eyes beautifully echoes the outline of the vessel, which has its widest part in the lower third.Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze zhi with similarly stylized birds, 12.1 cm high, dated 10th century BC, in the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number F1919.6. The MacLean Collection has been formed over the last fifty years by Barry MacLean, a businessman from Chicago, who began to collect in the early 1970s. Over time, he made many trips to Asia for business, and began to narrow his focus to ancient bronzes from China and their archaistic counterparts from later dynasties. The MacLean Collection of Asian Art is housed in a museum which was designed by Larry Booth and completed in 2003. Since 2004, the museum has published seven books, held thirteen exhibitions, lent objects to many other museums, and awarded a dozen fellowships to train future specialists and enthusiasts.Published: Richard A. Spectacular, naturally grown patina overall with several layers of malachite encrustation and small areas of azurite and cuprite. The crisply cast decorations are extremely well-preserved, which makes this one of the most attractive examples of its kind. In such pristine condition, it must be considered exceedingly rare.Weight: 2,878 gDimensions: Width 28 cm (across handles)Gui were used during ritual ceremonies for storing cooked rice or millet. A RARE BRONZE SPADE COIN, BU, ZHOU DYNASTY China, 1046-256 BC. Finely cast with a hollow handle, the rectangular spade head with a concave edge with three parallel ridges to each side, one side inscribed with an archaic character. A single sign inscribed to one side.Provenance: Dutch trade. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, small losses, and casting flaws. The bronze is covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite and cuprite encrustations.Weight: 103.2 (incl. stand) Dimensions: Length 15.1 cm (incl. stand) and 9.4 cm (excl. stand)Mounted to an associated metal stand. (2)Spade coins (bu) were an early form of money used during the Zhou dynasty. It was shaped like a spade or weeding tool, but the thin blade and small sizes of spade money indicate that it had no utilitarian function. The inscriptions on these coins usually consist of one character, usually either a number, a cyclical character, a place name, or the name of a clan. The crude writing is that of the artisans who made the coins, not the more careful script of the scholars who wrote the votive inscriptions on bronze. The current lot is an example of a square shouldered spade coin.Literature comparison:Compare a related spade coin with a similar inscription of the name of a city, 'Wu', in the British Museum, registration number 1909,0511.5. A RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL, HU, MIDDLE WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 西周中期罕見青銅壺 Expert's note: This vessel comes in a 100% untreated, original, as-excavated condition unlike most of the large Shang and Zhou Dynasty bronzes in circulation, which typically have undergone substantial restoration and patina treatment/enhancement. The X-Ray (images 3 and 4) reveals that the meticulously incised design is in a magnificent state of preservation just below the patina. The X-Ray (images 20, 21, 22 and 23) further reveals that there is no repair work whatsoever, and that deep surface corrosion is minimal. Overall, it must be said that such a large vessel, which such fine designs, and in such a good condition must be regarded as very rare. (more x-ray images available upon request) China, 10th-9th century BC. The sides flat-cast with four rows of large fish scale patterns with combed borders, below two pairs of long-tailed birds confronted on a leiwen band between a pair of lug handles flanking the base of the neck, the whole raised on a spreading pedestal foot pierced on two sides with a circular aperture. The bronze is covered overall in a magnificent, naturally grown patina with extensive malachite, cuprite, and azurite encrustation.Provenance: A Far Eastern collector in Queens, New York, USA. Extensive wear, minor losses and small nicks, light scratches, encrustations. Natural patina overall with extensive malachite, cuprite, and azurite encrustations. A COPPER-INLAID BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, HU, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY 東周錯銅蓋壺Expert's note: For further research and a comparative analysis with published examples in major institutions, see Charles D. Weber, Chinese Pictorial Bronze Vessels of the Late Chou Period. Part III, published in Artibus Asiae, volume 29, number 2/3, 1967, pages 115-192. In this publication, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of pictorial bronze vessels from the late Zhou period and suggests that this type of decoration originated from Huixian, Henan province, from the 6th into the early 5th century BC.To properly evaluate the current lot, it is essential to compare it with the related examples found in the Fogg Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see literature comparison). These institutions possess vessels attributed to significant tombs in the vicinity of Huixian. These vessels share several identical pictorial elements with the present lot, as illustrated in the accompanying diagram. These pictorial elements also serve as a basis for dating the current lot, as referenced in fig. 70 of Weber's work, where the sinuous feline pictograms suggest a manufacture date of 500 B.C.Furthermore, page 151 of Weber's work highlights a pertinent observation. During the late Zhou period, pictorial decoration on these types of vessels was arranged irrespective of the placement of handles. Consequently, handles were often affixed over a portion of the pictorial representations, partially covering the design. This alignment further strengthens the connection of the present lot to the published examples, suggesting that it is not only closely related, originating from the same period and region, but also having a strong possibility of it originating from a neighboring site.China, late 6th-early 5th century BC. Superbly cast, the globular body supported on a tall spreading foot and rising to a waisted neck with a flared mouth, the shoulder set with two small lug handles. The body is finely inlaid with copper in five registers depicting geometrically arranged designs of pairs of birds, felines, and deer within lozenge borders which also encircle the foot, the body further interspersed by elaborate ruyi-like designs, the mouth and rim of the cover with line borders. The similarly decorated domed cover surmounted by a loop finial. The vase has retained its original cover for well over two millennia, which makes it exceedingly rare.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Southern California, USA.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, expected minor casting flaws, small nicks and losses, light scratches. Compare a related related copper-inlaid bronze hu, lacking the cover, 44.5 cm high, dated ca. 5th century BC, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 29.100.545. Compare also a related copper-inlaid bronze hu, lacking the cover, 44.7 cm high, dated to the Warring States period, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1928.143. A similar hu is illustrated by J. So, Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, 1995, vol. III, no. 44, where the author, p. 257, describes how the motifs “were first cast in copper, then inserted into the mold and held in place with spacers”. This technique was more effective in keeping the copper decoration in place than the more conventional method of hammering the copper into cast or incised depressions. Another similarly decorated hu lacking cover is in the museum collection of Fujii Yurinkan Museum, Kyoto, where it is registered as an Important Art Object by the Japanese government. Another hu with a cover was included in the exhibition Chinese Archaic Bronzes, Sculpture and Works of Art, J. J. Weber,《Chinese Pictorial Bronze Vessels of the Late Chou Period(中國晚期週時期青銅器圖案)》第三部分,發表於 Artibus Asiae,第 29 卷,第 2/3 期,1967 年,第 115-192 頁。 J. A UNIQUE AND RARE MODEL OF RUDOLF DIESEL'S FAMOUS THIRD TEST DIESEL ENGINE USED IN THE SUCCESSFUL 1897 ACCEPTANCE TEST The model is unfinished, includes a small collection of machined parts and spare parts In 1885, Diesel set up his first shop in Paris to begin development of a compression ignition engine. The process would last 13 years. In the 1890s, he received a number of patents for his invention of an efficient, slow burning, compression ignition, internal combustion engine. At MAN in Augsburg, prototype testing began with a 150 mm bore/400 mm stroke design on August 10, 1893. While the first engine test was unsuccessful, a series of improvements and subsequent tests led to a successful test on February 17, 1897 when Diesel demonstrated an efficiency of 26.2% with the engine, The full size engine of this design proved a significant improvement on the steam engines of the time which could only achieve an efficiency of 10 per cent. Please refer to 'Early History of the Diesel Engine' Rudolf Diesel's Invention. Dieselnet.com (Rudolf Diesel 1858-1913). Condition Report: This model is unfinished due to the builder passing away prior to completion of the model. Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 352

A Worcester scallop shell dish, circa 1757-58Crisply moulded in the form of an open shell, painted in blue with the rare 'Bird on a Floral Branch' pattern, one bird perched on a flowering prunus spray, another bird and an insect in flight, 12.2cm wide, workman's markFootnotes:ProvenanceRobyn Robb exhibition, 2008, no.28Pauline and David Tate CollectionThis design was only recognised in 1984 and included by Branyan, French and Sandon in the revised edition of their Blue and White pattern book as I.C.18A. The painting uses differing tones of underglaze blue and is remarkably successful given the difficulty the factory experienced controlling blue painting on this sharply-fluted shape. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 223

Lot 44

A rare sealed 'Squat Cylinder' wine bottle, dated 1781 Of olive-green tint, the wide body with a long tapering neck with a tooled lip and string rim, applied to the side with a circular seal inscribed 'Rd. Hill/ Wyke Farm/ 1781', with a deep basal 'kick-up', 23.2cm high Footnotes: Provenance With Neil Willcox, 20 December 2001 A C Hubbard Jr Collection Literature Roger Dumbrell, Understanding Antique Wine Bottles (1983), p.99, fig.159 David Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), pp.775-6 It has not been possible to identify the individual or locality to which this seal relates. There is a Wyke in Devon, Dorset, Shropshire, Surrey and West Yorkshire and several Wyke Farms in Cumbria and Dorset, any one of which may relate to this bottle. It has been previously suggested that the seal may relate to Sir Richard Hill, baronet (1732-1808) or may have instead originated from Wyke-Champflower in Somerset or Wyke in Wiltshire, but it has not been possible to support any of these attributions. Burton records one other bottle bearing a seal with this date and inscription, but the second has the text engraved in an arched format and may have been executed on a separate occasion by the same die cutter. A rare Barr, Flight and Barr Worcester mug, circa 1809The scrolled handle with a thumbrest, printed with a youthful portrait of Queen Charlotte, flanked by smaller prints of a cornucopia and a dove with an olive sprig between gilt line borders, 8.7cm high, impressed crowned BFB markFootnotes:ProvenanceCharles Dawson CollectionThe printed portrait of the Queen was adapted by Robert Hancock after an engraving by James McArdell, in turn taken from a painting by Jeremiah Meyer. The Worcester factory had used this print decades earlier, not long after the coronation of George and Charlotte in 1761. See the mug sold by Bonhams on 18 April 2012, lot 234. The new proprietors of the factory presumably wanted to reissue this now flattering young image, perhaps to mark the Golden jubilee of 1809.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 308

A rare Doccia figure emblematic of Winter, circa 1750After Balthasar Permoser, modelled as a bearded man holding a torch with flames, a fur cloak wrapped around him, standing beside a fire, the billowing smoke forming a rococo pedestal supporting the figure, left in the white, 19cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceBonhams, 16 November 2005, lot 125Mavis Bimson CollectionThis figure is modelled after one of the four seasons sculpted in ivory by Balthasar Permoser. Klaus Lankheit, Die Modellsammlung der Porzellanmanufaktur Doccia (1982), p.96, illustrates a similar coloured figure in the Museo Corrreale di Sorrento, his left arm hanging down rather than holding a torch. Another, slightly later polychrome model of the same type is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Charles E Sampson Memorial Fund, and is illustrated by J. Munger, Eighteenth-century Doccia porcelain in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in Quaderni degli amici di Doccia, I (2007), ill.18. In the Doccia factory inventory, the series of the four seasons is mentioned around 1760 as Le quattro Stagioni di Baldassar senza padellina, e con candeliere, alte circa mezzo braccio, where it is also mentioned that the ivory originals were kept in the collection of Marchese Giuseppe Ginori in Florence. These figures appear to be lost. Lankheit notes there are two series of the seasons by Permoser mentioned in the inventory, which might relate to the figure groups with and without candle holders. Balthasar Permoser (1651-1732) moved to Florence in 1675 where he worked for Giovanni Battista Foggini, in whose studio he remained fourteen years before returning to Dresden in 1689 where he worked at the court of Johann Georg III, Elector of Saxony. Permoser returned to Florence once more in 1697, this time remaining only a year. A closely related ivory series of the four seasons by Permoser dated 1685-90 is in the Green Vaults in Dresden, inv. nos.II 45-47, published in Balthasar Permoser hats gemacht: Der Hofbildhauer in Sachsen, exhibition catalogue, Skulpturensammlung (2001), no.18a-d, where the existence of two other ivory versions of the Four Seasons is noted. Another Doccia example of this figure was sold by Bonhams on 16 November 2005, lot 125.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 3

A rare and unusual Dutch serving bottle, late 17th centuryOf 'Shaft and Globe' form in cobalt-blue glass, the squat globular body moulded with sixteen evenly spaced vertical spiral ribs which have been most unusually combed with fine spiralling horizontal bands, a single ring collar on the tall slender neck, a small 'kick-up' underneath the base, 19cm highFootnotes:Similar examples with plain moulded ribs are illustrated by John Sandon, Antique Glass (1999), p.75 and by Van den Bossche, Antique Glass Bottles (2001), p.116, pl.66. Another was sold by Bonhams on 3 November 2016, lot 97. However, the way in which the ribs have subsequently been 'combed' with fine horizontal spirals is most unusual and is a technique that does not appear to be recorded in the literature. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

F Severne Mackenna notes that the raised anchor period body and glaze 'combine to produce an effect of voluptuousness', not achieved in the earlier incised triangle period, see Chelsea Porcelain: The Triangle and Raised Anchor Wares (1948), p.32. Only a handful of these rare and wonderful models are known. One from the Zorka Hodgson Collection was sold by Bonhams on 10 September 2008, lot 9. A rare English delftware punch ladle, circa 1750With a round bowl applied with a long slender handle, painted in blue with trailing foliage, the handle with blue dashes, 17.5cm longFootnotes:Punch ladles were made in silver and other materials, with a curled over terminal on the handles that allowed the ladles to be hung on the rim of a punchbowl. No other English delftware punch ladle is apparently recorded. However, an interesting parallel might be drawn from the decoration on a Liverpool delftware bowl from the Olive Collection, sold by Bonhams on 31 January 2019, lot 118, contemporary with the present lot. The bowl is painted with a detailed scene after William Hogarth's 'A Midnight Modern Conversation' where the central figure ladles punch from a ceramic punch bowl, the ladle of indeterminate material. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 90

A fine and rare Dutch stipple-engraved Royal armorial light baluster wine glass by 'Gyrinus', circa 1765The round funnel bowl decorated in extremely fine diamond-point and stipple-engraving with the arms of Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina, Princess of Prussia and Orange-Nassau, the centre with a crowned medallion containing the Prussian eagle holding a sword and sceptre, within an elaborate scrollwork frame issuing scrolling flowers, surmounted by a crown, the stem with a beaded dumbbell knop above a teared inverted baluster terminating in a basal knop, over a conical foot, 19cm highFootnotes:ProvenancePrivate British CollectionWhilst he never signed any of his engravings, 'Gyrinus' is associated with designs on 24 extant goblets known as 'polder glasses', originally commissioned by members of the Water Board office 'De Hooge Maasdijk van Stad en Lande van Heusden' between 1762 and 1788, which were sold by Christie's as part of the Earl of Bradford Collection on 4 June 1985. These particular glasses are all partly, and a few wholly, line-engraved in very fine diamond-point. With a handful of exceptions, the engraved decoration is distinctive in the use of 'pseudo-stippling' in which the decoration is formed of a pattern of fine and dense lines which give the impression of stippling. The present lot appears to be unrecorded by F G A M Smit in his 1993 catalogue of Dutch Stipple-Engraved Glass. Smit records just twenty-eight glasses by this engraver, of which thirteen are armorial. This includes a light baluster engraved with the arms accollé of Prince Willem V and Princess Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina, see Smit (1993), p.183, no.Kd.1. As well as the style of the engraving, the form of this goblet is also characteristic of those preferred by 'Gyrinus'; all known examples have round funnel bowls on stems which are typically knopped. For another light baluster wine glass engraved with these arms, see Lot 80 in this sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
