An extremely rare pair of 'Martin's Margin' spectacles, made by Benjamin Martin circa 1750. Steel made with horn inserts or 'margins' around the glass lenses. Temple hinges with raised slotted screws. The straight arms with ring ends, the right arm stamped '36 BM.' A lead solder repair to the right arm ring end, some twine binding the ring end of the left arm, otherwise in excellent condition, no damage and no scratches to the lenses. Note: Hugh Orr, in his 1985 publication "Illustrated History of Early Antique Spectacles" states that Benjamin Martin did not stamp or hallmark his spectacles. It is certainly very rare to find marked models, however there are four known models with Martin's Margins stamped 'BM' in the Carl Zeiss Museum in Okerochen and one pair in the British Optical Association Museum in London. Benjamin Martin, was a London mathematician, instrument and spectacle maker and is credited with making the first eyeglasses that corrected vision in addition to being a reading aid. He published an essay in 1756 in which he explained his theories that the common spectacle then in use was "prejudicial to the eye" because the large lenses allowed too much "light to enter the eye." Martin made his 'visual glasses' which had reduced aperture lenses by way of the thick horn margin and in which the "lens tilted inwards so that the axes of the eye converged on the object of regard." This optical innovation with its extremely distinctive appearance became known as "Martin's Margins". (See cover illustration)

THE SHEILA ROSENBERG COLLECTION Wooden figure carving by Mutuaga of the Massim Region, Papua New Guinea, circa 1900-1920. Height 38cm, width 8cm at widest point. Provenance: From the collection of Sheila Rosenberg. Carved in a reddish brown wood, the highly decorated naked figure stands crouching slightly upon a three-legged base, its arms held together in front of its body, fingers interlinked. Its face, arms, back and legs are all carved with scrolling decoration, as is its belt and the circumference of the three-legged stand. On the stand and head there are very small traces of lime that had once been rubbed in to heighten the carving. Mutuaga is a phenomenon amongst Oceanic tribal art. In a field where virtually all of the many thousands of carvers remain unidentified, Mutuaga stands alone as a master carver whose work has been celebrated, collected and is also the subject of much scholarly research and publication. Born around 1860, Mutuaga lived and worked in Dagodagoisu village in the Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea. He died in the early 1920s. We know a great deal about him, in part because he was befriended by Charles Abel of the London Missionary Society. This friendship began in the 1890s. Although Mutuaga did not adopt Christianity, Abel became his patron and promoted his carvings among European missionaries, traders, and visitors in the area. Abel provided a outlet for Mutuaga's carvings beyond the traditional exchange practices of his community. Commodores and even two of Papua's first governors acquired Mutuaga's sculptures. Many of these works later found their way into galleries and museums across the world, even into the collections of artists such as Jacob Epstein. We are also fortunate in the extensive research and writings of the art historian Dr. Harry Beran who has studied Mutuaga at length. Beran identified Mutuaga and his body of work through some hundred sculptures that had been languishing largely unrecognised in museum collections. Mutuaga's naturalistic style is very distinctive, his three dimensional figures have realistic proportions, feature prominent ankle and wrist bones, almond eyes and eyebrows. The majority of Mutuaga's carvings are utilitarian artefacts such as lime spatulas used in the practice of betel nut chewing. There is a history in Mutuaga's Massim culture for the carving of independent, naturalistic figures for the purpose of warding off sorcery, however Abel asserted that figures such as the carving offered here were made for trade with Westerners at his suggestion. Beran has divided the independent figure carvings into stylistic periods, this piece is identified and illustrated in his book as "style variation 5 of the naturalistic sub style." (See page 231 of Beran's book 'Mutuaga, a nineteenth-century New Guinea master carver.') It dates from 1900-1920. An extremely rare, important piece, in near perfect condition. (See cover illustration) Condition Report: Good condition. No glue or repairs.
