Walter Richard Sickert A.R.A. (British, 1860-1942)Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques signed, inscribed and dated 'To Dot Middleton/W. Sickert - 1900' (lower left); further inscribed 'Dieppe' (lower right)oil on canvas45.5 x 56 cm. (18 x 22 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, by whom gifted to Dorothy (Dot) Middleton, thence by family descentPrivate Collection, U.K.This previously unpublished Sickert oil dating from 1900, depicting Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques in Dieppe, is one of eight known similar compositions the artist painted in oils between 1900 and circa 1907. It relates most closely to the circa 1902 canvas bearing the same title, which was exhibited at Pallant House Gallery's Sickert in Dieppe exhibition during 2015 (cat.no.37). These two versions are the only ones without the young trees included in the foreground, which prior to this newly discovered painting Wendy Baron suggested was 'circumstantial evidence' of the early date for the known oil. The present lot is rare in that it is dated by Sickert and therefore proves Baron's supposition is correct. Inscribed 'To Dot Middleton' (lower left) this picture can safely be assumed as the first example from the series. The oil on panel which belonged to the Dean of York was bequeathed to York Art Gallery in 1963.The motivation for Sickert leaving London and settling permanently in Dieppe during 1898 was the painful separation from his wife, Ellen. Letters from the artist at the time suggest it also invigorated his creativity and presented ample opportunity to explore new subject matter; by which he meant landscapes as opposed to predominantly portraiture. Between 1898 and 1905 Sickert obsessively recorded the town, both its landmarks as well as the ordinary streets. The Gothic structure of St Jacques received much attention, with a fine example dating from circa 1899-1900 now in the collection of Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester. Although, as Katy Norris remarks in her Pallant House Gallery catalogue, 'He also represented the colourful little houses on the Rue de la Boucherie behind an open space, which is bordered on the left by the north elevation of St Jacques.' (Katy Norris, Sickert in Dieppe, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, 2015, p.53).The same year as Sickert painted Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques (1900), a solo exhibition of his work was presented at the legendry Parisian dealer, Durand-Ruel's gallery in Auteuil, alongside an exhibition of Monet's Water-Lilies series. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lynn Chadwick R.A. (British, 1914-2003)Maquette for Who welded iron and composition38.5 cm. (15 1/8 in.) highConceived in 1961UniqueFootnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom acquired by the present owner, 30 May 1965Private Collection, U.K.ExhibitedLondon, Marlborough Fine Art, Lynn Chadwick, November-December 1961LiteratureDennis Farr & Éva Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick, Sculptor, With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-1996, Lypiatt Studio, Stroud, 1997, p.170, cat.no.344 (ill.b&w, a cast from the bronze edition)Dennis Farr & Éva Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick, Sculptor, With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-2005, Lund Humphries, Aldershot, 2006, p.178, cat.no.344 (ill.b&w, a cast from the bronze edition)Dennis Farr & Éva Chadwick, Lynn Chadwick Sculptor, With a Complete Illustrated Catalogue 1947-2003, Lund Humphries, Farnham, 2014, p.193, cat.no.344 (ill.b&w, a cast from the bronze edition)In 1952, Sir Herbert Read coined the phrase 'Geometry of Fear' to describe a group of sculptors working in a shared aesthetic to include Chadwick alongside the likes of William Turnbull, Eduardo Paolozzi, Reg Butler and Kenneth Armitage. Their forms were spiky, alien-like and Read felt reflected the anxieties of that post-war period. Maquette for Who, although conceived circa 1961, retains some of these elements such as the spindly legs and welded iron execution. This unique work later led to a small, bronze edition of four, none of which have ever previously been offered for sale on the open market, making the present example a rare opportunity for collectors.Whilst sharing some characteristics with the 'Watcher' series of the same period, Chadwick's 'Who' has evolved from three legs to two and the head has become less blocky and more elongated, thereby humanising the figure further. The organic surface texture of composition and metal rods is highly worked and allows the viewer to experience the artist's original workings in a way that bronze does not permit. The present work is accompanied with exceptional provenance having been acquired directly from the artist by the present owner, his former studio assistant, and remaining in the same private collection ever since. We are grateful to the Artist's Estate for their assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AMMAR FARHAT (1911-1987) The Tunisian bride (la mariée tunisienne) Oil on canvas Signed on the upper right corner 65 x 53,5 cm Notes: Ammar Farhat (1911-1987) began his career as an artist at age fifteen by selling portraits of Egyptian singers to cafés. His work was first exhibited in 1938 in a collective gallery. Two years later, he established his personal gallery. In 1949, he joined the School of Tunis and won the Young Artist Prize which help him to move to Paris. In, 1984, he won the National Art Prize. The depicted subject, i.e. a Tunisian bride, seems to be a rare one in his production. This painting may be one of the best example of this theme, notably given the number of characters depicted and its visual impact. For a related painting at public auction, see Gros Delettrez Drouot, 2008/06/23, lot 83, sold for 33.000 euros.

Pack volunteered to carry an important dispatch into Nieuwpoort and had much difficulty in escaping when the French invested it. Later he was engaged at Boxtel and in the winter retreat to Bremen. Following that retreat the 14th squadron was transferred to the 8th light dragoons after being attached to it. When Pack came home he obtained his lieutenancy in the 14th on 12 March 1795. He commanded a small party of dragoons in the Quiberon expedition^ and in this period did duty for some months as a field-officer on Isle Dieu. He received his troop in the 5th dragoon guards on 27 February 1796^ and while serving with them in Ireland in 1798 he led a patrol near Prosperous against a party of rebels^ who lost twenty men and eight horses.¦¦Pack commanded the escort which conducted General Humbert and other French officers to Dublin after their surrender at Ballinamuck. On 25 August 1798 he was promoted major in the 4th Royal Irish dragoon guards and on 6 December 1800 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel in the 71st highlanders. He commanded the 71st at the recapture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1806^ where he was wounded at the landing in Lospard~s Bay. During the ill-fated operation in South America in 1806-7 he was taken prisoner^ but he managed to escape. He then commanded the light troops of the army in two successful actions against the enemy and in Whitelocke~s disastrous attack on Buenos Aires^ in which he received three wounds.¦¦In 1808 the 71st was ordered to Portugal^ and he commanded it at the battles of Roliça and Vimeiro. He marched with Sir John Moore~s army into Spain and in the retreat to Corunna. After returning to England he took part in the Walcheren expedition in 1809^ in which he bravely stormed one of the enemy~s batteries during the siege of Flushing. He became aide-de-camp to the king with the rank of colonel on 25 July 1810. He was then appointed with local rank to a Portuguese brigade under Marshal Beresford and commanded it at Busaco in 1810^ and in front of Almeida in May 1811. When the French garrison escaped Pack pursued them to Barba del Puerco^ and upon orders of Sir Brent Spencer blew up the defences of Almeida. At the capture of Ciudad Rodrigo^ Pack^ who had been appointed a British brigadier-general^ led his Portuguese brigade to make a feint attack on the outwork of the Santiago gate^ which was converted into a real attack.¦¦Pack distinguished himself at the battle of Salamanca and was honourably mentioned for his services in the operations against Burgos. He became a major-general on 4 June 1813 and was present with his brigade at Vitoria. Wellington placed him in temporary command of the 6th division in the Pyrenées^ and he was wounded again at Soraven. He commanded a division at the battles of Nivelle^ the Nive^ Orthez^ and Toulouse^ where he received yet another wound and was honourably mentioned. For his Peninsular services^ in which he was eight times wounded^ he received the Peninsular gold cross and seven clasps. He was offered a brigade in the expedition to America but instead was appointed to command at Ramsgate. He was made KCB on 2 January 1815.¦¦In June 1815 Pack commanded a brigade of Picton~s division at Quatre-Bras and Waterloo^ where he was again wounded. That was his last foreign service. He married^ on 10 July 1816^ Lady Elizabeth Louisa Beresford (d. Jan 1856)^ fourth daughter of the second earl of Waterford^ and sister of the first marquess. Pack held the orders of the Tower and Sword in Portugal^ Maria Theresa in Austria^ and St Vladimir in Russia. He was appointed colonel of the York chasseurs in 1816^ lieutenant-governor of Plymouth on 12 August 1819^ and colonel of the 84th foot on 9 September 1822. Pack died at Lord Beresford~s house in Upper Wimpole Street^ London^ on 24 July 1823. In 1828 his widow erected a monument to him^ surmounted by a marble bust by Chantrey^ in the cathedral church of St Canice^ Kilkenny^ of which his father had been dean. A RARE TEXTILE AND NEEDLEWORK COLLAGE PICTURE DEPICTING SAINT CECILIA, LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURYDepicting interior setting with seated figure of the Saint, patron of music and musicians, with attendant angel playing a pipe organ, hand annotated musical text, donor (?) figures to an archway to the left, created using paper, textiles, hand dotted gilded paper, the whole with penwork and hand painted detailing, and with small glass beads simulating jewelled details and fruitsapproximately 20 x 28cm, in an ebonised moulded 17th century frame, 41.5 x 49.5cm overall Together with a letter, dated 1972, from the Wendy Hefford, Research Assistant Department of Textiles at the Victoria & Albert Museum stating "The picture of cut paper and textiles seems perfectly correct for a 17th century date so far as the style of the *** and the patterned textiles are concerned", and a footnote from PW Jackson, Deputy Keeper Prints & Drawings, confirming "The drawing supports the same conclusion". The latter part of the 16th century had seen a large resurgence of interest in Saint Cecilia. In 1585 Pope Sixtus VI had founded the the Academy of Music (Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia) in her name. In 1599 her tomb in Trastevere was opened and the priest and others testified to the incorruptibility of her cadaver- an affirmation of her blessed status. The musical score is inscribed with the Cantantibus organis. This Latin text forms the antiphon of the Vespers on her Feast Day, November 22nd. 'Organis', Latin for 'musical instruments', was often mistranslated as 'organ' and hence, as in this picture, the Saint is often depicted playing, or being played, an organ. The pipes themselves look possibly to be tarnished silver. The exuberant combination of textiles is reminiscent of needlework and embroidery produced by glove and stomacher makers of this period. The dotted gilded paperwork is akin to contemporary gold braiding work whilst the painted detailing evokes the work of burse makers and limners. Although the likely origin of this work is, as yet, unknown it would seem to be the work of a gifted child or young person- emulating the finer work they may have seen in their household. It has been noted though that the male figure shows strong similarities in dress, face and hair to the Hilliard 'Attici amoris ergo' portrait miniature from 1588- now in the V&A collection. Condition Report: As per age and materials used- there has been shrinkage to paper sections- and tarnishing to metal surfaces. Lower left hand corner looks 'incomplete' and indicates that there would have been additional decoration- now absent.Colours and details slightly faded from sunlight and atmosphere exposurePlease refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. Please note, the additional images are not exhaustive but try to give a representation of of the condition notes Condition Report Disclaimer
