MARX BROTHERS THE: A vintage signed and inscribed sepia 10 x 8 photograph by Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx individually. The three comedians are seen together in head and shoulders poses, each wearing their familiar costumes at the height of their film careers. Signed by each brother with their first names only in dark fountain pen inks to the image, Groucho`s signature partially running across a darker area although perfectly legible. In the upper corner of the image appears an inscription in a secretarial hand, `To...Merrily yours, The Marx Brothers`. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, a good image of the actor standing in a three quarter length pose in costume as Gypo Nolan. He stands before a Wanted for Murder poster in a scene from the 1935 film The Informer. Signed in black ink across a light area at the head of the image, `To Mary O`Shea, with my very best wishes from Victor McLaglen`. It was for his role in this film that McLaglen won his Best Actor Oscar. Rare, particularly so in this form. VG

FORD JOHN: (1894-1973) American Film Director, Academy Award winner. Good A.L.S. with his nickname Pappy, two pages, 8vo, Dublin, n.d. (1952), to Meta, on the printed stationery of the Shelbourne Hotel. Ford announces `Well at last if you won`t write me, I turn the other cheek & have yr. boy friend Ernie write you. We`re having dinner together-kicking the gong around.` and continues to comment on his work in Ireland, `Start shooting "weather permitting" next week. Have a helluva good cast. The only malcontents-Barry-(Fitzgerald) whom we told to go & f**k himself & girlfriend Madame Eileen Crowe-both asked salaries greatly over their British rates-fine Irish sentiment-likewise Mr. Shields.` In concluding Ford asks for a copy of a book and a Searchers article. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a couple of small water stains, just affecting three words of text (although still legible) but not the signature. A rare letter of fine content. About VG John Ford was in Ireland to direct the film The Quiet Man (1952) starring John Wayne and Maureen O`Hara. In the letter he refers to Barry Fitzgerald (Michaleen Oge Flynn), Eileen Crowe (Mrs. Elizabeth Playfair) and Arthur Shields (Reverend Cyril Playfair). The Quiet Man was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two, including a Best Director Oscar for John Ford.

A cream stetson Western Trails hat made by Bailey of California, previously belonging to and worn by John Wayne, the size 7 wool felt hat features a cream ribbon trim to the brim and dark leather sweat band to the inside crown. Signed (`John Wayne`) in bold blue ink with his name alone to the brim. Accompanied by two letters of provenance, the first a typed letter from the OK Corral Cowboy Saddlery & Western Dress suppliers in Sutton, Surrey, 30th March 1974, to J. Wayne in Uxbridge, Middlesex, stating, in part, `We at the OK CORRAL would like to take the opportunity to congratulate you on purchasing the stetson autographed by John Wayne. This item we`re sure, will increase in value, and become a much valued family heir loom....It gave our proprietor great pleasure meeting John Wayne in person to obtain his autograph, he found him most pleasant with his flamboyant personality....We are also grateful to Capitol Radio for auctioning the stetson for us, and pleased that you happened to be listening in at the time.` The second, holograph letter is signed by Jess Willard of Sutton, Surrey, 28th March 1974, and states, in part, `I am the President of the Virginians Western Club. I was very pleased to hear that you bought the stetson with John Wayne`s signature on. When I met John Wayne he was very pleased to sign the hat, and no doubt he would be very pleased to hear that the money raised will go to charity.` Each of the letters are neatly mounted. A superb and rare signed souvenir of the Duke. VG

The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, is a bill of payment for the sum of £50, being six months interest on monies advanced by `An Act for Granting to Their Majesties, a Subsidy of Tonnage and Poundage, and other Sums of Money payable upon Merchandizes Exported and Imported`. Boldly signed by Wren in the right margin. Rare. Some light age wear and minor staining to the horizontal central fold, not affecting Wren`s signature. An attractive signed document. About VG The document most probably relates to the expenditure on Wren`s work on the façade of Hampton Court Palace, 1689-94.

BARTON RALPH: (1891-1931) American Artist and Caricaturist. Rare illustrated A.L.S., Ralph Barton, one page, 8vo, Paris, 23rd June 1926, to Mr. Blodgett. Barton writes a brief, ironic letter, in full, `Awfully nice of you to ask me, but I never, under any circumstances, send my autograph or draw one of these [arrow inserted] things of myself. Regretfully yours, Ralph Barton` Barton`s arrow points downwards to a good original profile self caricature, drawn in dark fountain pen ink, which fills the lower half of the page. Autographs of Barton are rare in any form following his untimely suicide at the age of 39 and this is a particularly attractive letter, enhanced by the caricature. VG

Wordsworth has penned four lines of verse, being the conclusion of Simon Lee: The Old Huntsman, in full, `I`ve heard of hearts unkind, kind deeds/ With coldness still returning;/ Alas! The gratitude of men/ Hath often left me mourning`. Signed and dated at the conclusion. Professionally matted in cream alongside a good original watercolour of Rydal Mount by the artist T. Lindsey Aspland (1808-1890). Framed and glazed in the original gold coloured frame of Goodspeed`s Book Shop in Boston to an overall size of 20 x 12.5. An attractive presentation. VG

Larkin thanks his correspondent for having sent a copy of Encounter with Martin Buber and continues `I am glad your son enjoyed his time at Hull, and that he found the Library useful. We do all we can to help students, but it is rare indeed that we receive such warm and generous acknowledgement.` Accompanied by a typescript copy of the original letter from Hodes to Larkin. Scarce. The publicity portrait is reproduced from a photograph by Angus McBean. Signed (`Agatha Christie`) in later years with her name alone in blue ink at the head of the image. The signature partially runs across a darker area with somewhat weaker contrast. Signed photographs of Christie are extremely rare. A heavy surface crease runs horizontally across the base of the image, largely affecting a darker area of the photograph. G

BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI A. C.: (1896-1977) Indian Religious Leader, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, commonly known as the Hare Krishna Movement. Rare T.L.S., A C Bhaktivedanta Swami, one page, 4to (folding air mail letter), n.p., (Los Angeles, California), 22nd February 1969, to N. Banerjea Nripen Prabhu. Bhaktivedanta thanks his correspondent for an invitation to Renu`s marriage and comments `It would have been a great pleasure for me to attend the ceremony, but as I am far off from my country and from you, I regret that I will not be able to attend…` He adds that he is sending a copy of his recently published book, Bhagavad Gita As It Is, as a gift for the newly married couple, and also encourages his correspondent to read it. Bhaktivedanta also remarks that he has not received any news about the Radha-Damodar Temple Affairs, stating that he had previously reminded him about the lease. Some light age wear and creasing, a few small tears to the edges and three small holes to the letter, only very slightly touching one letter of the signature and one letter in the text. About G

WALLACE WILLIAM: (1878-1933) English Criminal, convicted in 1931 of the murder of his wife, Julia. Wallace`s conviction was later overturned by the Court of Criminal Appeal, the first instance in British Legal History where an appeal had been allowed after re-examination of evidence. Extremely rare ink signature (`W. Wallace`), in the form of an endorsement to the verso of a cheque. The partially printed cheque, signed by John F. A. Simms and drawn on the Belfast Banking Company, Strabane, 1st September 1911, is made payable to Wallace for the sum of £5.9.1. Some very light, minor foxing, about VG The cheque is endorsed by Wallace in the same year that he met his future wife.

Rare A.L.S., La M. de Pompadour, (a scarce full signature), one page, 8vo, n.p., 16th February 1758, to Marquis de Mailly, in French. Pompadour writes, in full, `It is a real satisfaction for me, dear Sir, to have contributed to the favours that the King has granted you. Believe me equally, dear Sir, your very humble and obedient servant`. With integral address leaf bearing a good black wax seal. VG

FLEMING ALEXANDER: (1881-1955) Scottish Biologist, Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1945. An excellent, vintage signed 7 x 9.5 photograph, the image depicting Fleming seated in a three quarter length pose smoking a cigarette. In his hand he holds a pen as he signs and inscribes the book which rests on his knee. Signed (`Alexander Fleming`) in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone across a light area of the image. An ink annotation to the verso in an unidentified hand indicates that the autograph was obtained at the Fifth International Congress of Microbiologists at Quitandinha in Brazil, 23rd August 1950. CAPELL ARTHUR: (1631-1683) 1st Earl of Essex. English Statesman. Upon the discovery of the Rye House Plot, to assassinate King Charles II, in 1683, Essex was imprisoned in the Tower of London where he later committed suicide. Rare ink signature (`Essex`) on a small 8vo piece neatly removed from an official warrant dated Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, June 1679. Also bearing the countersignatures of the Treasury Commissioners Sidney Godolphin, Edward Dering and John Ernley. About VG Essex had been appointed First Lord of the Treasury on 26th March 1679.

GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. A fine autograph manuscript signed, George P, seventy pages (rectos only), 8vo, n.p., 1777-78. The bound manuscript is entitled Translations from Terence and features attractively penned pages in the hand of the Prince, being his translations from Latin into English from three plays of the Roman playwright Terence, Adelphi, Andrea and Heautontimorumenos. Each of the pages have a red ruled border. Signed to a preliminary blank and annotated beneath in the Prince’s hand ‘Volume 4th, begun Octr: 31st 1777-finished May 23rd 1778’ Bound in morocco with marbled endpapers and gilt lettering to spine. With brief printed description laid down to another preliminary blank and bearing the bookplate of George W. Stevens, c.1932. to the pastedown. A rare and attractive volume with an interesting association. Some very light age wear, about VG Previously the property of another English King, Edward VIII. This volume was originally sold by Sotheby`s at their auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor`s property, 1997 (Lot 401).

GEORGE IV: (1762-1830) King of the United Kingdom 1820-30. Fine, historic D.S., George P R, (a fine bold signature), as Prince Regent, at the head, seventeen pages, folio, Carlton House, 24th January 1815. The manuscript document is a warrant for affixing the Great Seal to the Ratification of a Secret Convention between King George III and the Emperor of Austria, with a copy of the instrument (in English and French) attached, comprising fourteen clauses largely concerning the military aid that each party will provide if attacked. With blind embossed paper seal affixed. A rare, fascinating document. VG

Prince Albert Victor, affectionately known as Eddy, was considered a suspect in the Jack the Ripper serial killings. Fine, rare signed sepia cabinet photograph depicting the Prince standing in a three quarter length pose. Photograph by Barraud of Oxford Street, London. Signed (`Edward`) in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount and dated 1885 in his hand. Annotated to the verso in ink by the recipient, Rev. W. W. Dickinson, `Presented to me by H.R.H. Prince Edw. at a private interview at Marlborough House, April 28, 1885 & signed by himself on the occasion. W. W. WALPOLE ROBERT: (1676-1745) British Prime Minister 1721-42. Fine A.L.S., Orford, one page, small folio, Houghton, (King`s Lynn, Norfolk), 24th June 1743, to Charles. Orford writes a social letter to his friend, commenting `This place affords no news, no subjects of amusement or entertainment for fine men. Men of wit and pleasure about Town understand not the language, nor taste the charms of the inanimate world. My flatterers here are all mutes. The Oaks, the Beeches & the Chestnuts seem to contend….I in sincerity admire them, and have as many Beauties about me as fill up all my Hours of Dangling, and no disgrace attends me from 67 years of age. Within Doors we come a little nearer to real life, and admire upon the almost speaking Canvass, all the Airs & Graces which the proudest of the Town Ladys can boast; with these I am satisfied because they gratify me with all I wish, and all I want, and expect nothing in return which I cannot give.` In concluding Walpole writes `Since I wrote the above, we have b en surprised with the good news from abroad. Too much cannot be said upon it, for it is truly matter of infinite joy, because of infinite consequence.` Autograph letters of Walpole are rare. VG

The partially printed document is addressed to John Archer and appoints him to be one of Devonshire`s Deputy Lieutenants `in and for the County of Derby, to Act, Do, Execute, and Perform all and every the Powers, Matters and Things` stated in several Acts of Parliament, made for ordering the Militia Forces. Signed by Devonshire at the foot. Extremely rare. Some very light overall staining, otherwise VG

William Pitt` and also marked `Private` in his hand. Annotated and dated 1761 in another hand at the right edge. A rare signature with a good association between two Prime Ministers. D.S., Bute, at the foot, and George R, as King, at the head, two pages, small folio, Court at Saint James`s, 2nd September 1761, in the first year of the monarch`s reign. The manuscript document is addressed to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, and concerns the appointment of John Ewer, Bishop Elect of Llandaff, allowing him to also retain the `Canonry….of our Free Chapel of St. George in Our Castle of Windsor.` With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear and some neat splitting to the folds, just affecting the seal, but not touching the signatures. Rare, G John Ewer (d.1774) Bishop of Llandaff and Bishop of Bangor, remembered for his attack on the American colonists, prompted by their indifference to episcopacy.

Bellingham has penned five mathematical problems (individually numbered from 154 Prob. 45 to 158 Prob. 51) to either side of the page, each problem comprising a question (in part `Two persons A & B were talking of their ages; says A to B, 7 years ago I was just three times as old as you were, and 7 years hence I shall be just as old as you will be-what are their present ages`) and followed by Bellingham`s calculations of the answer beneath. With a contemporary annotation in an unidentified hand at the foot of the second page, `John Bellingham`s autograph who shot Mr. Perceval`. VG

The manuscript document is a warrant addressed to the Sheriff of Surrey regarding Mansell Powell, confined in the County Gaol of Surrey for the non payment of £50, requesting that Powell be discharged from custody and imprisonment. Countersigned at the foot by Frederick John Robinson (1782-1859) 1st Viscount Goderich. British Prime Minister 1827-28, Chancellor of the Exchequer 1823-27 and William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844). With blank integral leaf. A rare combination of signatures of a monarch and two Prime Ministers. About VG

CANNING GEORGE: (1770-1827) British Prime Minister April-August 1827. D.S., George Canning (a fine, bold ink signature), one page, folio, London, 18th April 1827 (just six days after Canning became Prime Minister). The partially printed document, completed in manuscript, in French, is a passport issued to George Ward, an Englishman, travelling to Malta via France and Italy. With an engraved coat of arms at the base alongside Canning`s signature. Some light folds, in remarkably fine condition, not usually encountered with passports. VG. Autographs of Canning as Prime Minister are rare following his short time in office.

About EX This image was taken by the BBC when Baldwin made a radio broadcast. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. An excellent, unusual D.S., Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, fourteen pages, 4to, n.p. (London), 26th November 1920. The partially printed bound document is an Indenture (Counterpart Lease) between the Trustees of the Paddington Estate and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England and Winston Churchill, Lady Randolph Churchill and J. S. Spencer Churchill for the lease of 2 Sussex Square and 11 Sussex Mews East, Paddington, London, for a term of 66 years, expiring 25th December 1985, at a total rent of £130. The document features a colour plan of the properties. Signed by Churchill with an extremely rare example of his full signature to the final page in dark fountain pen ink. Also signed by Lady Randolph Churchill (‘Jennie Randolph Churchill’) and John Churchill (‘John Strange Spencer Churchill’) in dark fountain pen inks above and below Winston Churchill’s signature. Each of the signatures appear alongside small circular seals and are separately witnessed, Lady Churchill’s by her third husband Montagu Porch (1877-1964, British Civil Servant), Winston Churchill’s by a civil servant from the War Office and John Churchill’s by a clerk. The indenture is bound in printed paper wrappers and bears various official Land Certificate title stamps etc. An extremely rare combination of signatures. Some light age toning and wear to the covers, the internal pages clean and fine. Generally VG Lady Randolph Churchill (1854-1921) American-born mother of Winston Churchill. John Strange ‘Jack’ Churchill (1880-1947) British Military officer, brother of Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill signed this document while serving as Secretary of State for War (1919-21) and lived at 2 Sussex Square from 1921-24. In 1924 he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer.

CASTRO FIDEL: (1926- ) Cuban President 1976-2008. Rare A.L.S., Alex, one page, 8vo, Mexico, 26th July 1956, to Chela, in Spanish. Castro writes to one of his followers, in full, ‘I beg of you that with the utmost urgency you get the sender of this letter in contact with J.M.M., localise him immediately without wasting one minute. Receive a big hug from…’ One small area of paper loss to the lower right edge, not affecting the text or signature. About VG At the time of writing this letter, Castro was in Mexico, organising and training for an invasion of Cuba to overthrow Fulgencio Batista’s government. Having already been tried, captured and incarcerated for his leading role in the failed 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks, Castro travelled to Mexico and, understandably, preferred to be there with a degree of anonymity, hence the reason for signing this letter with his middle name. The letter is dated 26th July, exactly three years after the Moncada Barracks attack took place, signifying the start of the Cuban Revolution. This date was also adopted by Castro as the name for his Revolutionary Movement, Movimiento 26 Julio or M 26-7, which eventually toppled Batista’s dictatorship in 1959. Castro was accompanied in Mexico by 82 exiled revolutionaries, including his brother Raul Castro and Che Guevara.

JOHNS W. E.: (1893-1968) English Pilot and Writer of adventure stories, creator of the ace pilot Biggles. A good, rare A.L.S., W. E. Johns, one page, 4to, Hampton Court, 2nd February 1965, to Miss. Gilbert. Johns informs his correspondent that he has `always been aware of the importance of what children read` and continues `I was once a boy myself, and I am sure my early reading influenced my life, in that the books I read inspired me to emulate my heroes.` The writer further reveals `I was a writer on technical aviation news, thirty years ago, seeing another war coming. I decided to teach boys what I had learned from experience as a soldier and airman in many parts of the world-things they would not learn at school. I was 16 years in the RFC & RAF. I have written 200 books. Boys who have read them should know all that has taken me 70 years to learn.` A letter of excellent content. VG

Neatly laid down to a page of an autograph album containing over 40 other signatures by a variety of famous individuals including Flinders Petrie, H. M. Bateman, Samuel Hoare, Frank Dicksee, W. R. Inge, Horace Annesley Vachell, Austen Chamberlain, Ian Hamilton, Johnston Forbes Robertson, Ronald Storrs (dated Jerusalem, 19th July 1926), Lord Roberts VC, Evelyn Wrench, Erika Morini, Neville Howse VC (T.L.S.; the first soldier in the Australian services to be awarded the VC), Tom Bridges, William Price Drury, Billy Bishop VC etc. Most on pieces (and a few letters) neatly laid down to pages or loosely inserted. GRISSOM VIRGIL: (1926-1967) American Astronaut, one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts. Grissom was the second American to fly in space and the first person to fly in space twice. Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Grissom standing in a full length pose wearing his NASA spacesuit and helmet as he prepares to step into a US Navy training capsule. Signed in black ink across a light area at the centre of the image, `To Miss. McClure, Virgil I. Grissom`. Together with a similar unsigned photograph of Wally Schirra. Accompanied by an A.L.S. by Dr. Randall M. Chambers, one page, 8vo, Philadelphia, 29th September 1962, to Miss. Gladys McClure, forwarding the two photographs and adding that one has been signed. Also included is the original envelope from Chambers. Rare. Some very slight silvering to the images, extremely light surface creasing and two small pinholes to the upper edges of the photographs. ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI (1969). The first man to walk on the moon. Signed and inscribed colour 8 x 10 photograph, the original NASA image depicting Armstrong standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his white spacesuit. A large image of the moon appears in the background. Signed across a light area of the image, `To Mac & Ace, with warm regards, Neil Armstrong, Apollo 11`. The signature and inscription are slightly faded, although remain perfectly legible. Together with an A.L.S., Viola L. Armstrong (Mrs. Stephen K. Armstrong)` by Armstrong`s mother, two pages, 8vo, 912 Neil Armstrong Drive, Wapakoneta, Ohio, 10th October 1971, to Mrs. McKee, thanking her for her telephone call and letter and continuing `I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the very beautiful bronze medal. I shall cherish it as long as I am permitted to live. Now I shall turn your letter with your request over to Neil, and I hope that you will receive it before long. The next time I see him I shall give it to him.` In a postscript she also remarks `I shall mail your generous gift to the Neil Armstrong museum…` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Armstrong. Also including the original invoice from Presidential Art Medals Inc., made to Maxine McKee for the supply of a bronze Apollo 11 medal at a total cost of $5.20. McKee has annotated the invoice in her hand, in part, `Sent bronze medal to Neil Armstrong`s mother, after telecon with her….It was sent cert. return receipt`, accompanied by the original US Postal Service receipt referred to by McKee, the printed oblong 12mo document boldly signed by Neil Armstrong`s father, Stephen K. Armstrong. The lot also includes an Apollo 11 mission patch. An unusual and rare grouping of signatures. G to VG, 5

GORDON CHARLES: (1833-1885) British Army officer, known as Chinese Gordon. Rare D.S., C G Gordon, being a partially printed bank note, 12mo, Khartoum, 25th April 1884. The bank note, in Arabic, is for a sum of Egyptian piastres, also known as a Gordon note. The note bears several official stamps and is signed by Gordon with his name alone in ink to a clear area in the lower right corner. Some very light age wear, otherwise VG When Gordon arrived in Khartoum he found a depleted treasury and issued his own bank notes in order to pay troops and secure supplies. Although Gordon held off defeat for ten months, Khartoum fell around nine months after the issue of the Gordon notes, and the General died defending the city. A large number of the Gordon notes were burned and it became a punishable offence to possess one. As such, any surviving notes are rare and desirable.

LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British Lieutenant-Colonel, renowned for his liaison role during the Arab Revolt 1916-18. Known as Lawrence of Arabia. D.S., J. H. Ross, using his assumed name of John Hume Ross, being a signed cheque, London, 28th March 1929. The blue and black partially printed cheque, completed in Lawrence`s hand, is drawn on Martins Bank Ltd., numbered W37369, and made payable to Staff Sgt. W. A. Knowles for the sum of £35. A red ink cancellation runs through the signature, only slightly touching a couple of letters, and the signature remains perfectly legible. Rare in this form. VG

LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British Lieutenant-Colonel, renowned for his liaison role during the Arab Revolt 1916-18. Known as Lawrence of Arabia. A good A.L.S., T E Shaw, two pages, 4to, RAF Mount Batten, Plymouth, 2nd April 1930, to Jock [Staines, a fellow airman]. Lawrence writes an informative letter to his friend, stating that his passes have gone forward to the adjutant and continues to provide him with some news of mutual colleagues, `Ozzy wants to be promoted and to be posted: so that`s that. There`s a Sgt. Clark posted here, from overseas, & now on overseas leave: Marine Section. I have not seen him. Otherwise no changes….Your bed is full of another airman, but we will boot him out when you are due. The camp has been over full this week, with details of 201 Squadron here.` Lawrence also comments on a small motor launch that Lawrence was restoring (`This Biscuit worked yesterday & today. I am working too: on her. Or I shall be as soon as I stop writing to you.`) before remarking `Higgins is going to wring your neck for suggesting that he might make a mess of your passes!`, further stating `It`s right that there aren`t to be any more Corporals made without qualification. Old Chippy had the jammiest luck ever, at Gosport. You won`t have a rifle & equipment to clean here! All`s quiet in Mount Batten: though I liked the place better when it was quite small, last year. However one can`t grumble. There`s a wireless in our hut now.` Rare. Some very light, minor age wear, about VG. Between 1917-1945 the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy used Mount Batten, a peninsula in Plymouth Sound, Devon, as a flying boat base. The RAF operated search and rescue launches there with the help of Aircraftsman Shaw.

GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Book signed, a hardback slim folio volume entitled Taoiseach-Then and Now by William Hugh Coverdale, being a history and narrative of the Kingdom of the Saguenay, the illustrated volume published in Canada, 1942. Signed (`Guy P Gibson`) and dated 22nd August 1943 in his hand to the front free endpaper. Gibson`s bold fountain pen ink signature appears at the head of nine other signatures by various other personnel associated with Operation Quadrant including Ernest J. King (1878-1956) American Admiral of World War II; Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979) British Admiral of the Fleet during World War II; William D. Leahy (1875-1959) American Admiral of World War II and George Marshall (1880-1959) American General of World War II, Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1953. Each of the signatures are in bold dark fountain pen ink. Together with a small, interesting selection of unsigned printed ephemera and 8 x 10 photographs (3) relating to Operation Quadrant, including a restricted Telephone Directory, 14th August 1943, (numbers include Guy Gibson, Anthony Eden, Ernest King, George Marshall, Louis Mountbatten, Dudley Pound, Charles Portal, Louis St. Laurent and many others), and other Most Secret documents relating to arrangements for office and sleeping accommodation, meals and refreshments, transportation and security during the meeting at the Chateau Frontenac Hotel in Quebec. Some of the items bear the ownership signature of Marjorie Lightning who is listed as a secretary in the typing pool of the British Delegation within the telephone directory.
