Some copies, including the British Library copy, do not contain the 6pp. list of subscribers called for by Ferguson (although not by Hocken). The third is a rare handbook; only one copy listed on COPAC (Oxford University), 6 on WorldCat with Oxford copy only in UK. The folding map locates post towns and telegraphs stations, the Australia Overland Telegraph Line having being completed only the previous year, in 1872. The Tasmanian almanac is also scarce, COPAC listing only 2 copies (BL & Oxford).
Rhys (Jean, author, 1890-1979) A small archive relating to an attempt to adapt Quartet for television, including 13 Autograph Letters signed to the director Patrick Garland, discussing living in Devon, the writing of the novel "I worried & worried for it was my first long novel. Then one day that the cinema... I saw it, walked back to the hotel & wrote it", its potential staging and characters; an unpublished autograph manuscript reworking of part of the novel as a play, 12pp.; and a small group of other items including 2 A.L.s. from Cecil Beaton, v.s., c.1970-72.⁂ An excellent archive, giving an insight into Rhys' working methods as well as her views of character and staging. Autograph material by Rhys is rare at auction.
Cockfighting.- Anonymous (1750s) Articles for a Cock Match, broadside with vignette of a cock match, engraving on laid paper with large armorial watermark, platemark 465 x 385 mm. (18 1/4 x 15 1/8 in), sheet 485 x 390 mm. (19 x 15 3/8 in), repaired tear to upper centre above vignette, even browning and minor handling creases, 'Printed and Sold by Reginald Heber, publisher of the List of Horse Races, Henry Bennet Junr. and Harwen Martin, [1750s].⁂ Rare. We have been unable to trace another copy, or anything similar with such an early publication date.
Astrology & Astronomy.- [Turner (Robert)] Astrological institutions. Being a perfect isagoge to the whole astral science; or judgment of the nature, vertue and influence of the celestial bodies upon the terrestrial..., double-page plate 'The Order, Nature and Qualities of the Twelve Houses', engraved vignettes of the star signs, final f. blank, occasional spotting, closely trimmed at head towards end, affecting some headlines, contemporary calf, gilt spine in compartments and with red morocco label, head of spine chipped, corners worn, rubbed, [Wing T3327], printed by J[ames]. C[ottrell]. for Samuel Speed, at the signe of the Printing-Press in S. Paul's Church-yard, 1658.⁂ Rare in commerce. This the rarer of two variants of this work.
Livery companies.- Advice to the livery-men of London: shewing that it is for their interest and honour, to chuse merchants in trade, for their representatives in parliament. With seasonable cautions to them, on the approaching election, advertisement f. at end, small marginal repair to inner lower corner of title and advertisement f., some soiling, 20th century red cloth, spine gilt, 8vo, Printed for A. Baldwin, 1713.⁂ Rare, with ESTC listing only five copies (2 BL and only 1 in US (John Hopkins)).
Bristol.- The Consequences of a new theatre, to the city of Bristol, considered: with some interesting thoughts on the subject of plays in general: Humbly submitted to the consideration of the wiser and more serious part of the inhabitants of the said city, title lightly soiled, marginal water-staining, 20th century half morocco, spine with red morocco label, 8vo, Bristol, Sold by T. Cadell, bookseller, in Wine-street, 1765.⁂ Rare, with ESTC listing only three copies, of which only one Uk (BL).
Gothic novel.- Minerva Press.- The Bandit Chief; or Lords of Urving. A Romance, 4 vol., without half-titles, some spotting or staining, lightly browned, contemporary black straight-grain morocco, gilt, rubbed, g.e., [Block p.13; Summers, p.241; Blakey, p. 262], large 12mo, 1818.⁂ Rare Gothic novel. The last set we can trace at auction was in 1993 (bought by Chris Johnson for £1840). Summers in The Gothic Quest cites it as an example of an extreme gothic tale. The setting derives from Mrs. Radcliffe's imaginary Italy.
Horror & Supernatural.- Blackwood (Algernon) and Wilfred Wilson. The Wolves of God and Other Fey Stories, first edition, the odd spot, small ink mark to title, original cloth, spine slightly faded, light rubbing to tips of spine and corners, dust-jacket, light surface soiling, spine ends and corners a little chipped, a few very short closed tears with creasing to head and foot, light rubbing to extremities, still an excellent example of a scarce and fragile jacket, 8vo, 1921.⁂ Rare in the dust-jacket. "Of the quality of Mr. Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute; for no one has even approached the skill, seriousness, and minute fidelity with which he records the overtones of strangeness in ordinary things and experiences, or the preternatural insight with which he builds up detail by detail the complete sensations and perceptions leading from reality into supernormal life or vision." - H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature.
Horror & Supernatural.- [Doyle (Sir Arthur Conan, contributor)] Ghost Stories and Presentiments, first edition, light foxing to title, advertisements and fore-edges, contemporary ink ownership inscription to head of title, original pictorial cloth, lettered in gilt, spine a little darkened, minor rubbing to tips of spine and corners, other wise a sharp, near-fine example overall, [not in Tymn], 8vo, [1888].⁂ Rare. A repackaging of volume 3 of the scarce triple-decker Dreamland and Ghostland which includes five of the seven Conan Doyle short stories found in that collection (the first appearances by Conan Doyle in book form). The sales were of the initial collection were poor and the publisher repackaged the sheets in separate volumes with new titles and bindings. We can trace only one other copy of this collection at auction.
Horror & Supernatural.- Landon (Percival) Raw Edges, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to Lady Headfort to front free endpaper, 4 plates, occasional light scattered spotting, light browning to endpapers, original pictorial cloth, some very minor bumping to spine ends and faint discolouration to spine, but a remarkably sharp and excellent copy overall, [Tymn 8vo, 1908.⁂ Rare signed and in such excellent condition, includes the much-reprinted classic ghost story. "The little-known Percival Landon was capable of suspense, terror, wit, and insight into Edwardian technology." - Tymn.
Horror & Supernatural.- Marryat (Florence) The Blood of the Vampire, first edition, half-title a little browned, occasional light finger-soiling, modern antique-style half calf, gilt, g.e., [not in Tymn], 8vo, 1897.⁂ Rare, Marryat's tale of a female vampire which sucks the life force from her victims was unfortunately overshadowed by Bram Stoker's much better known vampire novel that was published the same year.
Horror & Supernatural.- Mee (Huan) A Diplomatic Woman, first edition, 2pp. advertisements, light browning to endpapers, original pictorial cloth, very light fading to spine, minor bumping to spine ends and corners, some very light rubbing, but an excellent example overall, 8vo, 1900.⁂ A rare collection of short stories centring on the exploits of a female spy, these include a horror story set on a submarine.
Horror & Supernatural.- Waring (D.G.) The Oldest Road, first edition, original cloth, light rubbing to extremities, dust-jacket, a very very short closed tears to head and foot and some minor creasing, but a bright, near-fine example overall, 8vo, 1938.⁂ A rare work, especially so in the extraordinarily bright dust-jacket. Waring's novels were often set in a semi-fictionalised Ireland, frequently featuring the British Secret Service and the occult.
Plath (Sylvia) Ariel, first edition, book label and adhesion marks from removed bookplate to front free endpaper, original cloth, dust-jackets, faint discolouration to spine, some very minor chipping to spine ends and corners, otherwise a near-fine copy in the publisher's original wraparound band, 8vo, 1965.⁂ Rare in such fine condition with the original wraparound.

Humphreys, 1852.⁂ Rare little guide in the Welsh language for those setting out for Australia.
Cyprus.- Robinson (Phil.) Cyprus and Sokotra: "The New Colony," and "The New Field for Missionary Enterprise", 'seventh thousand', 2 lithographed maps, a little spotting, a few small stains, original pink printed wrappers, ink signature to head of upper wrapper, chipped, 8vo, William Clowes and Sons, 1878.⁂ Rare little guide, aimed at 'Colonists and Merchants'.
Brewing.- Long (John) A treatise on malting, Dedicated to the Right honorable and honorable the Dublin Society, half-title, some mostly marginal and light damp-staining, modern boards, 8vo, Dublin, printed by William Sleater, No. 28, Dame-Street. (printer to the Dublin Society.), 1800.⁂ Rare. ESTC lists only three copies, of which only one in the UK (BL).
Country Gentleman (A) Essays on agriculture and planting, founded on experiments made in Ireland, half-title, ink name 'Wm. Walker' to title, modern marbled limp boards, [Not in Fussell], 8vo, Dublin, Printed by Craisberry and Campbell, for William Jones, No. 86, Dame-Street, 1790.⁂ Rare at auction. We can trace only one other copy (2011).

Outlining the arguments of the Rev. R. Woodward for a poor law in Ireland, along with some comments on the state of the poor in Cork. The copy is presented by the author to Wrixon Becher, M.P..

Varlo was Yorkshire born, but farmed extensively in Ireland, and later America. He invented a new type of plough know as the 'Yorkshire or Rotherham plough'.

"This book I have not seen. I had a chance to buy it and failed to take it!" (Fussell).Provenance: 'Larkin Dutton's Book bought at Auction 1817, Price 25 cts' and 'Larkin Dutton's book 1819, Aston Township Delaware County, State of Pennsylvannia'. Coulomb (Charles Augustin) Theorie des Machines Simples, second (first collected) edition in book form, half-title, 10 folding engraved plates, occasional light foxing, uncut in original pink wrappers, spine a little faded and chipped at ends, printed paper label starting to peel, [Norman 528; Gillmor, Coulomb and the Evolution of Physics and Engineering in 18th-Century France, 1972], 4to, Paris, Bachelier, 1821.⁂ Superb copy in original condition of the rare second edition in book form of the most famous work by Charles-Augustin Coulomb (1736-1806), in which the French physicist founded the science of friction. "Coulomb's work in friction remained a standard of theory and experiment for a century and a half, until the advent of molecular studies of friction in the twentieth century" (DSB III, p. 442)Coulomb had first presented his fundamental Théorie des machines simples orally to the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1781, winning the prestigious 'Prix double de l'Académie des Sciences pour l'Année 1781'. The first appearence in print followed in 1785 in the Mémoires de Mathématique et de Physique Présentés à l'Académie Royale des Sciences (vol. X, pp. 161-332), while the first edition in book form was published in Paris in 1809. The second edition of 1821 also includes other papers by Coulomb on friction, mechanics and ergonomics.
Americas.- Gonzalez de Barcia (Andres) Historiadores Primitivos de las Indias Occidentales..., 3 vol., first collected edition, titles with woodcut device, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials, vol.3 with engraved head-piece, vol.1 with contemporary ink inscription to title crossed out and A1 slightly defective at lower outer corner (repaired), vol.2 with H2 defective at inner margin, [para 2]1 short tear to lower margin, [para 3 & 4] signatures bound in wrong order and [para 7 & 8] signatures damp-stained at head, vol.3 with Dd1 torn along edge of text and C1 of Canto III shaved with slight loss to side-notes, browning to a few leaves but generally a good clean copy, bookplate of Sir Richard Vyvyan Bart., contemporary limp vellum with loops and toggles (one broken), spines with red roan labels (slightly chipped at edges), rubbed and soiled, nick to head of spine of vol.3, [Sabin 3350], folio, Madrid, [?Ibarra], 1749. ⁂ Important collection of works on the early settlement of the Americas including accounts by Columbus, Cortes, Nunez Cabeca de Vaca, Lopez de Gomara, Zarate, Xerez, Schmidel and others. A pencil note on the front pastedown of vol.1 reads, "Containing the scarce Cartas of Cortes and Narration of Cabeca de Baca. This collection of voyages is very rare because of the accidental destruction by fire of a large number of copies. J.S. Cox."

Comprises a Regulations for signalling by Block Telegraph, Sykes Lock and Block, Stratford Western Junction, includes special instructions and Polygon box with special instructions (signatures of H H Maudlin and G F Fiennes). Also East London junction ( the hole in the wall) includes special instructions for the East London Railway. The above three documents complete with S.S I. are a rare survival. And finally Standard block signalling regulations June 1957 (BR re issued this under the LNER format and headings in 1950 and again in 1957).
