Prussian Ersatz Felt Pickelhaube, a good example of a large size Prussian felt ersatz helmet as shown on pages 10, 11, 12 and 13 of Feldzug 18. the body is firm, no moth damage, all of the fittings, which include the back strap, spike, spike base, front peak and strap fittings all matching in an olive drab paint finish with its very rare green leather strap, national and state cockades, its 9 tongued black leather liner all complete with one tear. A fabulous example.

Baden Reserve Regiment 110 Enlisted Mans Pickelhaube and Matching Trench Cover, a very rare all leather pickelhaube, excellent condition skull with one minor indentation to the back brass strap. Slight crazing to the front and back peaks. Subdued brass fittings having the Reserve Baden plate without scroll at base with its correct Reserve Cross fitted to the breast of the Baden griffin. Complete with its correct national and Baden cockades, original chinstrap which is still in the hanging position, with its original field cover with green stencilled numbers ‘110’. To the rear peak an early date of ‘1905’ plus a later date of ‘1906’ with army group markings. A superb time warp helmet with the chinstrap still in the hanging position. Featured on pages 128 and 129 of Feldzug 1915.

M.15 Pickelhaube to the Prussian 73rd Fusilier Regiment, a very rare pickelhaube, as shown on pages 178, 179 of Feldzug 15 being a good size 57 all leather pickelhaube, the skull is excellent, both front and back peaks are securely attached to the main body, all of the fittings, which include the back strap, removable spike and circular spike base, Prussian front plate with Peninsular, Waterloo scroll, front peak trim and all strap fixings in matching field grey. The interior retaining much of the original colour, its 9 tongued leather liner all intact with original drawstring, regimentally marked to the inner rear peak ‘R.73’ with the acceptance stamp of the 10th Army Corps, dated ‘1915’ with regimental stamp ‘FR.73’.

WW1 German 8th Jager zu Pferde Helmet and Tunic, a rare unit marked set of a field grey green enlisted ranks tunic and matching helmet for the 8th Regiment of Jager zu Pferde, the tunic is the rare wartime tunic in the unique colour field grey green of the Jager zu Pferde units, green piped front flap, all correct lace patterns for the 8th stitch in red number ‘8’ shoulder boards, all matching Prussian enlisted brass buttons, no replacements, no moth or damage to anywhere on the tunic. This tunic is shown on page 191 of Field Grey Uniforms of the Imperial German Army by Fisher and Baldwin. The tunic is complete with a magnificent example of a good size 56 all blued skull lobster tail helmet with brass fittings and correct Jager zu Pferde plate, correct large size Prussian and state cockades, the helmet liner with the 9 tongue helmet liner all complete. Marked to the upper inner crown ‘C.E.Juncker 1915’ and regimentally marked to the rear peak trim ‘8.J.P.

2nd See Battalion Enlisted Mans Shako and Matching Marked and Dated Field Cover, ultra rare helmet being the all cork cloth covered helmet belonging to an enlisted man in the 2nd See Battalion. The helmet featured on pages 86, 87, 88 and 89 of Feldzug 15. Large size skull with its chemically patinated See Battalion front plate, its correct field cockade in black, white and red, correct chinstrap, clearly marked to the interior ‘II.S.B. 1915’ with original owner’s name plus what appears to be another wearer’s name. The leather liner and its drawstring all complete. Twin air vents to each side of the helmet. With its matching field cover, which has identical markings as the helmet.

Pickelhaube Numbered Field Cover and Tunic Shoulder Board, a rare enlisted mans pickelhaube cover with wartime green numbers applied Regiment 157 with M.15/16 shoulder board, white piped with red chain stitched numbers ‘157’. All the fixing hooks present to the cover. Maker marked, size ‘54’, date ‘1916’ with only the first half of the regimental numbers visible. Further faint markings of ‘B.A.VI 1915’ (6th Army Corps).

German Trench Helmet with Camouflaged Sacking Cover, an excessively rare relic of WWI being a barn find dusty M.17 helmet, shell marked ‘ST62’ covered in a field made sacking cover, it is impossible to quote the amount of paint on the interior shell as it is impossible to remove the sacking cover without damage to the delicate cover, constructed with an exterior drawstring. To the interior the helmet still has its three section leather liner, one of the pads have both its tongues missing but all three retain their inner horsehair pads. The helmet is full of dust and residue of a barn or loft storage.

German M.18 Battle Damaged Trench Helmet, a superb battle damaged M.18 helmet, shell marked ‘W66’. The exterior retains virtually all of its green paint finish with a minor indentation and slight rubbing to the crown. A round has pierced the very front of the helmet, gone through the front liner pad and exited at the rear of the helmet. The helmet is complete with its three liner sections, the front section, which has the round piercing is still all complete with its inner horsehair, one of the two other leather sections with further damage to a tongue where the round has glanced, complete with its horsehair pad, which is loose and the third pad all complete with its horsehair pad and with its drawstring, with the very rare undamaged leather chinstrap, which is clearly maker marked and dated ‘1918’. Original owner’s name of ‘U.O. Ballen’ which we presume is Unteroffizier.

WW1 German M.18 Ear Cut Out Steel Helmet, an extremely rare version of the M.18 helmet, as shown on pages 138, 139, 140, 141 of Feldzug 18. This is one of the estimated only 2,000 examples issued with the wool dust camouflage. Only faint traces of the wool dust camouflage still adhered to the helmet, which can be clearly seen in the images in Feldzug 18. Complete with its three pad liner, all with the inner horsehair pads, original leather drawstring and its maker mark and ‘1918’ carbine clip type chinstrap. A very rare helmet. One of the armoured front plate lugs filled with wood, which was quite a common occurrence in the trenches.

Model 1907/10 Saxon Feldrock, a rare model 1907/10 enlisted mans feldrock, featured on pages 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 of Feldzug 14. A large size tunic, some light repairs to the material in places, it is advised that the description by M.Baldwin in the afore-mentioned book should be read in depth and the photographs studied, with the acceptance stamps of the 4th Company, 1st Battalion 14 Saxon Infantry Regiment and shoulder straps for the 5th Saxon Infantry Regiment, also from the 19th Corps. Both the shoulder straps and the condition of the tunic indicate that both items have been together as one unit since WWI, complete with shooting lanyard from the upper left hand shoulder as the tunic is viewed, standard Swedish cuffs, Iron Cross ribbon to the second buttonhole.

Imperial German Paper Cloth Working Suit, an extremely rare item of a jacket and trousers completely constructed in paper cloth. The tunic is of a pullover neck style with three closure buttons, all of the zeltbahn style, one button missing. The garment has shredded along the shoulder seam, twin closure buttons to the cuffs, complete with a matching set of trousers which have faint markings to the waistband but indecipherable, one fly button only, two waistband buttons of the zeltbahn type all complete with its shorter version of the waist adjuster strap at the rear of the trousers, two side pockets.

Very Rare WW1 German Stone Grey Enlisted Mans Combat Trousers, good large size set of the stone grey model 1907/10 trousers. Nap of cloth superb, no moth damage, all original fly buttons fitted, all of the waist/braces buttons have been removed, heavy duty cotton twill lining, profusely stamped with army corps marking ‘XVIII’ with a clear date of ‘1915’. One large brown stain only to the interior left hand pocket bag. A magnificent set and one of the rarest elements of the Imperial German soldiers uniform to obtain.

WW1 German MG08/15 Ersatz Tool Roll, photographed on pages 186 and 187 of Feldzug 18, constructed in the rare paper cloth material, it is complete with all its leather strapping and buckles, the one tool remaining is the large spanner and hammer, which are marked ‘MG’ with the maker’s mark and traces of the Imperial acceptance stamp. Two leather belt supports at the rear and faint traces of a maker’s circular stamp to the exterior.

2x WW1 German Grenade Hafts, rare wood haft for the M.15 stick grenade marked 5½ SEK’ and a sectioned haft for an M.16 or 17, probably for ordnance training, which displays the method of the priming of the grenade. Markings on the grenade haft are ‘C.S.S.’ plus ‘SB.20.6½ 1.6’ complete with end cap, porcelain ball and string pull.

WW1 German GEW98 Ammunition Pouch and Equipment Rig, because of the weight problem the Imperial German soldier has with his pouches weighing down the front of the belt without support, this soldier has utilised two of the rarer model bread bag straps that has an extra strap stitched to allow an X frame to be constructed. Both pouches although of different manufacturers have been worn by the same man and are of identical construction, both are ‘1917’ dated, all have steel fittings, the white stitching is good and firm, all leather supple, one pouch marked to what appears to be Regiment 112, which of course if Baden Infantry Regiment. A rare set.

Model 1916 Segeltuchtasche and Part Contents, this rare accessory being the canvas carrier for the gas mask and the spare filter in one compartment. Well service used, all the canvas is good and strong with its closure buttons and belt loops, some light rust staining. Maker marked in ink to the inner lid. Profusely illustrated on pages 156, 157, 158, 159, 160 and 161 of Feldzug 16. M.15 gas mask tin which is now unfortunately empty, complete with its shoulder strap and steadying strap. The spare filter tin contains 3 corn cores, this is a widely used practise by German troops, to use these corn cores when toilet paper was not available. In-depth reading of Michael Baldwin’s very full description of this gas mask container and its contents is advised. Due to Michael’s passing it is unknown as to where the original gas mask was in this set between the time he loaned it to the Whitgift School exhibition and his collection offered for sale.

Rare Medical Gas Mask for Soldiers with Head Wounds, the rare gas mask for using on wounded soldiers with head wounds in the event of a gas attack on the aid station or hospital. There is another example photographed on page 184 of Feldzug 18. The mask is in excellent condition with the rubberised material being extremely supple with its wrap and ties, both eyepieces complete, in its container with full stencilled instructions to the exterior. Red cross on white background, also stencilled. Faint traces of an over-stamp in the white field of the red cross. Some abrasions, minor indentations, missing its carrying string.

WW1 German Wire Cutters, a good set of the issue wire cutters 50cms in length, complete with both of their wooden grips, faint traces of field grey paint remaining, complete with its very rare metal belt suspension clip. The cutters are marked ‘TD 11’, the clip in field grey are shown clearly in Feldzug 17 pages 204, 205.

WW1 German Glass Water Bottle, the rare variation of water bottles being the total glass water bottle with its paper cloth covering, which is heavily maker marked and clearly dated ‘1918’ with army group marks of ‘B.A.VIII’ with a further ‘1918’ date. The attachment clip is still present as is the paper cloth tab that is attached to the cork and metal mounted stopper. Clearly shown on page 182 of Feldzug 18.

WW1 German Bavarian Aviators Flying Helmet, the Bavarians generally used a different style of helmet than the Prussians, modelled on the Franco/British Roold helmet but slightly shallower, this example clearly photographed on pages 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 of Feldzug 18. Excellent condition with its complete light tan 9 tongued liner, original paper size label ‘56’ applied to the interior with the original maker’s stamp of ‘Lorenz Stanko of Munich’ plus a clear date ‘1918’ to the very tip of the brown leather chinstrap. Both earpieces complete. Some light discoloration to the leather covering mainly to the front of the helmet. A rare piece of aviation headdress.

5x Enlisted Mans Shoulder Boards, a scarce Bavarian 1907 Field Artillery No.4, was a slip-on with tab cut, slight moth damage to the crown. 1915/16 white piped Hessian Infantry Regiment 116, three rusty drawing pin holes where applied to a collectors display board. A rare Guard Grenadier Regiment No.1, 15/16 model, white piped, well service used with three rusty drawing pin holes where applied to a display board. A slight mismatched pair of 15/16 red on yellow Foot Artillery 5th Regiment boards.

A Rare and Emotive Battle of Delville Wood, Brothers-in-Law Casualty Medal Groups Awarded to Riflemen Edward Coleman and Henry Barker, Both Served with the 8th Battalion Rifle Brigade on the Western Front. Both Fought in the Battle of the Somme, Henry Being Killed in the Trenches Outside of Delville Wood on the 17th August 1916 and Edward Being Killed Less Than a Month Later on the 15th September 1916, During the Battalion’s Attack on Switch Trench Outside of Delville Wood. The Bullet which Killed Edward Coleman Passed Through His Cigarette Case Which is Accompanying the Medals, the groups consist of 1914-15 Star, named to “Z-984 PTE E. COLEMAN. RIF:BRIG:” British War & Victory medal, named to “Z-984 PTE E. COLEMAN. RIF.BRIG.” Bronze memorial plaque, named to “EDWARD COLEMAN”. Metal Cigarette case, engraved with the following “RIFLEMAN. E. COLEMAN. Z.g84. R.B.C. COY. NO. 11 PLATOON 8TH BATT. 41ST BGDE. 14. DIVISION. 1916”, the cigarette case is battle damaged by the bullet which killed Edward Coleman. British War and Victory Medals, named to “S-13738. PTE. H.F. BAKER.” All remain in good condition and mounted on display boards. Edward Coleman and Henry Barker were both born in Birmingham, becoming Brothers-in-law when Henry married Edward’s sister, where they all lived in the same house in Highgate, Birmingham. Edward Coleman enlisted into the 8th Battalion Rifle Brigade in 1915 and served in the Western Front with the battalion from the 9th August 1915 as a Sniper. Henry Barker arrived in France in early 1916 being assigned to the same battalion. Henry Barker was killed in action on the 17th August 1916 in the trenches outside of Delville wood at the height of the Battle. The following day, Edward Coleman and the rest of the Battalion went ‘Over the Top’ and attacked Orchard and Wood lane Trenches outside of the Wood. Just under a month Later, Edward Coleman was killed in action during the Battalion’s attack on Switch Trench outside of Delville wood, where the battalion suffered over 400 casualties. His cigarette case failing to save his life when a bullet ricocheted off it into his chest. The cigarette case was returned to his mother by the Commanding Officer of the battalion after the Battle. The Battle of Delville Wood was fought from July to September 1916, and was a vital strategic defensive point around the Town of Flers, which was a point of great importance for the British army. After two long months of fighting and many failed attacks, the British army finally took the wood, thus being one step closer to taking the Somme battlefield. Henry Barker is buried in Delville Wood cemetery, where as Edward Coleman’s Original grave was lost following heavy fighting in the area and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Some moth damage to both boards, mainly to the yellow wool piping and the crowns.

WW1 M.1916 Pickelhaube Trench Cover, being the pattern with separate sections for spike and helmet body. Maker’s stamp ‘J.Jacobson Fulda’, and in a desirable rare large size, ‘59’ stamp. Very good example.

Rare Early 1st Pattern British Steel Combat Helmet of the North Staffordshire Regiment with its Original Trench Cover, being the rimless pattern in the early Apple Green paint finish. The front of the shell is fitted with its original owners regimental cap badge of the North Staffordshire regiment. The shell retains much of its original paint finish to both the exterior and interior of the helmet. Correct for this type of helmet is the two piece brown leather chinstrap and the early pattern oilskin six tongue liner system. Fitted loosely to the helmet shell is its original hessian sacking four panel trench cover with turned over brim section. It looks as if some numbers have been written on the top of the cover in each panel, possibly something that has been done by children playing with the item after the war. The cover is stained and has some small holes, all of which you expect on original covers. Overall a fine example of a very rare helmet.

Rare Large Brass Shell Case from one of the German “Big Bertha” Artillery Guns, the shell case has various markings to the underside. Remains in very good condition. Stands 78 ½ cms high, diameter 41 ½ cms. The Big Bertha guns were used by the German forces in the early stages of WW1 and were crucial in destroying many of the Belgium fortresses in 1914. These large guns were an iconic weapon of WW1

Rare Inert WW1 German 1915 Petard Raquette Type "Hairbrush" Grenade, very rare example of the primitive early forerunner to the German traditional stick grenade is this type based on the Petard Raquette type grenades issued to French soldiers in WW1. The steel metal box attached to a long wooden paddle handle. The grenade top is complete with the original card box which would have contained the explosive charge (now empty). Much of the original finish remains. An excellent period image of this grenade can be seen in the French book “Les Grenades Allemandes De La Grande Guerre” by Patrice Delhomme, on page 34. Rare Complete WW1 British 08 Pattern British Webbing Equipment Set, superb condition full set consisting of ammunition pouches, wide waist belt, shoulder straps, water bottle with cradle, bayonet frog complete with 1907 bayonet and shelter halve attachment, entrenching tool head in cover, side pack etc. Loose back pack. Most items clearly stamped and dated, including many pieces 1916 dated. Remains in very good condition. Would take a long time to acquire a full set of this equipment in this condition.

Rare 1918 Pattern Royal Air Force Other Ranks Tunic, superb example of the scarce 1918 pattern khaki wool four pocket tunic issued to enlisted ranks of the newly formed Royal Air Force. The tunic is fitted with pressed leather Royal Air Force 1918 pattern tunic buttons to the front and top pockets. Each arm with machine woven red eagles on khaki above embroidered red on khaki airman’s propeller rank badges. Tunic fitted with its fixed waist belt with single button fitting. Interior lining stamped in black ink “RAF” and original paper size label to the lower section where the date 1918 is just visible. Overall a very good example of a scarce tunic.
