Sullivan Collection (Triton IX, 10 January 2006), lot 1451; Numismatica Ars Classica I (19 May 1999), lot 1902.There is very little in the historical record of Ulpia Marciana, Trajan`s sister. Unlike many other imperial relatives during the Empire, she is reputed to have been of very high character. During Trajan`s reign, Marciana lived as a widow, and did not take another husband. She was a close friend of Trajan`s wife, Plotina, and both jointly accepted the title of Augusta in AD 105 (which they had both rejected in AD 98). The date of her death is debatable, and although some scholars believe she died in the year she was hailed Augusta, her death is commonly placed in AD 112 or 114.

EF, attractively toned, a couple of minor flan splits. Unique. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 75 (15 October 2003), lot 139 (part of). While the use of a grain ear wreath is known on other very rare imperial issues, most notably those of Gallienus accompanied by the legend GALLIENAE AVGVSTAE, as well as an extremely rare sestertius of Hadrian (NAC 72, lot 641), to date, for Antoninus Pius it occurs only on this denarius and the Heritage sestertius. The use of the grain ear wreath may be explained by imperial participation in the mysteries of Demeter at Eleusis – an event that is well-attested for Hadrian (and possibly Marcus Aurelius). While Antoninus Pius is known to have patronized the sanctuary and provided funding for its upkeep, he is not recorded as having participated in the mysteries, although these coins now suggest that he did.

Extremely rare late issue of this remarkable empress. Ex Julius Caesar and His Legacy (Numismatic Fine Arts, 13 May 1991), lot 146; Numismatic Fine Arts XXII (1 June 1989), lot 163.From the NFA catalogue: “The empress Galla Placidia had a most extraordinary career spanning the first half of the turbulent fifth century. Born about 388, she was the daughter of Theodosius the Great by his second wife Galla, and half-sister of Arcadius and Honorius. Taken prisoner by Alaric during the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410, she was eventually married to his successor, Ataulf. Following Ataulf’s death she was ransomed to the Romans for 600,000 measures of grain, and in 417 married the general Constantius by whom she had a son, the future emperor Valentinian III, and a daughter, Honoria. She acted as regent for the first twelve years of her son’s reign (425-437), but then gradually faded into the background as the political influence of the general Aetius increased. Her final years were devoted to the erection of sacred buildings in Ravenna, and her tomb, which contained also the remains of Honorius and Constantius III, is still to be seen in the city.Coins honoring Galla Placidia were struck both in the western empire, under her son Valentinian III, and in the East by her nephew Theodosius II. She may already have held the rank of Augusta under Honorius, but if not she certainly received it in 424 when Valentinian was created Caesar. This attractive solidus, issued from an uncertain Asian mint, may be closely dated by Theodosius II’s titles which appear on the reverse. His forty-second imperatorial acclamation, corresponding to the years of his reign, covers the period 10 January 443 to 10 January 444, whilst the celebration of his eighteenth and final consulship on 1 January 444 indicates that the issue to which the present coin belongs had ceased before the end of the year 443. After the reign of Theodosius II the seated figure of Constantinopolis disappeared from the gold coinage of the eastern empire, not to be seen again until the reign of Justin II more than a century later.”

When the usurper Johannes seized power in the western empire following the death of Honorius, Theodosius had Valentinian prepared to be Honorius` legitimate imperial successor. In AD 424, Valentinian was appointed Caesar and betrothed to Licinia Eudoxia, the daughter of Theodosius II. In AD 425, he was proclaimed Augustus at Rome. Twelve years later, in AD 437, he returned to Constantinople for his marriage. The wedding, on 29 October of that year, was a great state occasion. Flavius Merobaudes, the 5th century AD poet and rhetorician, and the official poet laureate of Valentinian III and Aëtius, described that a series of mosaics, now lost, depicted the occasion and the sequence of events that had led up to it. On their journey back to Rome, the newly-married imperial couple spent the winter of AD 437/8 in Thessalonica, during which time this extremely rare issue of solidi was struck.

Hahn (MIBE p. 42) argues that this mint struck as a result of “...new military activities on the Persian frontier, in Thracia and in Italy from 579 onwards. It was possibly in this year that the emperor sent a small army unit to Italy as a nucleus for the formation of a Roman city militia.”
