Lot 435

AN INDO-JAVANESE BRONZE SEATED DEITY, probably Shiva, holding a flower, a rosary, a fly whisk and a water bottle, on a circular stepped lotus pedestal, possibly 10th - 12th century, 6"" high. Although the flower held in the lower right hand is not typical for Shiva, the other attributes are, and so this is the most likely subject. Seated Javanese representations of Shiva are very rare, making this lot an intriguing discovery. Provenance: The A.T. Dexter Collection of Indo-Javanese, Himalayan, and Southeast Asian bronzes. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATING OF THIS LOT HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE THE CATALOGUE WAS FIRST PRODUCED

Lot 459

A RARE INDO-JAVANESE BRONZE SEATED GANESH, the unusual bald head showing the skull structure, with stylised facial features and flared ears, holding the usual attributes of broken tusk, rosary, axe and bowl of sweets, seated with one leg raised, on a circular base with three skulls, possibly 8th - 10th century, 6"" high. It is very rare, if not unprecedented, to find a Ganesh figure with a bald head. This may well be a particular Javanese interpretation of the subject. Provenance: The A.T. Dexter Collection of Indo-Javanese, Himalayan, and Southeast Asian bronzes. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATING OF THIS LOT HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE THE CATALOGUE WAS FIRST PRODUCED
