Most volumes ex Georges Le Rider, with his bookplate. In Numismatics—An Ancient Science, Clain-Stefanelli writes: “Usually 1836 is considered a significant date in the development of numismatic science. In that year two periodicals were started which for over a century attracted the most distinguished numismatists of the time and set the highest standards in research. In Paris Revue numismatique was founded … in London appeared the … Numismatic Chronicle.” These two journals, along with Revue belge de numismatique, which began publication a few years later, remain indispensable storehouses of information on ancient coins, medieval and modern numismatics, especially relating to their respective countries of publication. Of the three, and those published before or since, Revue numismatique may be the most important scholarly numismatic periodical ever issued. Long runs appear on the market infrequently, and complete sets are extremely rare. Clain-Stefanelli 893. Engel et Serrure 65–67: “Cette revue, créée par E. Cartier et L. de la Saussaye, est la première publication périodique sérieuse qui ait été consacrée à l’étude des monnaies anciennes au profit des sciences historiques.” Grierson 21. The Mélanges de numismatique is Clain-Stefanelli 675; Engel et Serrure 75: “Receuil comencé en 1874 … pour remplacer la Revue numismatique dont la publication semblait arrêtée.”

A complete set, including the abbreviated Numismatic Circular List issues published during the war years. Various formats and bindings, as specified below. Lot includes: Vol. 1 (1892–93), later black cloth-backed boards, gilt. Vols. 3, 4, 6 and 12 (1895, 1896, 1898 and 1904), original publisher’s red cloth, gilt. Vols. 5, 7–8 (1897, 1899–1900), contemporary red quarter calf, gilt. Vols. 2, 9–11, 13–43, 45–47 (1894, 1901–03, 1905–35, 1937–39), contemporary decorative cloth with fleurs-de-lys. Vol. 44 (1936), contemporary red cesloth, gilt. The Numismatic Circular List. 1940–41 in loose issues; 1942–47 bound in separate years in red cloth, gilt [title reverts mid-1947]. Vols. 56–74 (1948–66), red cloth, gilt, except for Vols. 58 and 59 (1950–51), loose original issues. Vols. 75–115 (1967–2007), loose original issues. Condition varies, but generally at least very good and most volumes near fine or fine. The longest-running numismatic house organ on the planet. Much more than a simple fixed price list, the Numismatic Circular has published substantive articles since the beginning, featuring many important works primarily on ancient and British coins, but also on other areas (Forrer’s Biographical History of Medallists, for instance, was originally published in its pages). Substantial runs of early volumes are infrequently offered; complete sets with the truncated war year issues are very rare. When encountered, they tend to be poorly preserved, with the larger-sized early volumes in particular being prone to encountering abuse over the years. The current set is one of the nicest encountered by the cataloguer. Manville page 695: “Spink’s Numismatic Circular…is arguably the most important and certainly the longest-lived of the commercial numismatic ‘house organs’ – essential for notes and shorter studies of British-related subjects but also including all other aspects of world numismatics.” Clain-Stefanelli 777.

Mionnet, T.E. DESCRIPTION DE MÉDAILLES ANTIQUES, GRECQUES ET ROMAINES, AVEC LEUR DEGRÉ DE RARETÉ ET LEUR ESTIMATION; OUVRAGE SERVANT DE CATALOGUE À UNE SUITE DE PLUS DE VINGT MILLE EMPREINTES EN SOUFRE, PRISES SUR LES PIÈCES ORIGINALES. Sixteen volumes complete. 12mo, contemporary brown quarter calf with marbled boards; flat spines ruled and lettered in gilt; red pages edges. Bindings rubbed; very good or better with fine interiors. The rare original edition of this monumental work, still consulted with profit. “A remarkable figure in numismatics at the turn of the century was the Frenchman Theodore-Edme Mionnet (1770–1842), who joined the Cabinet des Médailles in 1795. Strongly influenced by the classical tendencies of his age, he pursued ideals of disseminating knowledge of ancient coins among wider circles … he published descriptions of the type, history and rarity…. Eventually the publications grew into a considerable work, Description des médailles antiques grecques et romaines aver leur degré de rareté et leur estimation, published between 1806 and 1813 in six volumes with an additional volume of plates. The Supplément, in nine volumes, was issued between 1819 and 1837. In this largest publication (up to that time) on Greek coins, Mionnet succeeded in describing over 52,000 pieces. Although the work is not flawless and its scholarly standards are lowered by a continuous preoccupation with establishing the commercial value of coins, it still remains, through its wealth of information, an invaluable reference.” — Elvira Eliza Clain-Stefanelli, Numismatics—An Ancient Science. Babelon pages 132–136. Bassoli 45. Clain-Stefanelli 1855*. Daehn 165.

These volumes are all that Babelon published, with Jacques de Morgan publishing two additional volumes (vide infra) on Persian coins after Babelon’s death. Described in a 1935 Alfred Page numismatic book catalogue as an “ouvrage extrêmement rare et d’une documentation exceptionelle. — Les premiers volumes, complètement épuisés, sont introuvables.” Clain-Stefanelli 1809*: “An unfinished but monumental work, indispensable for the scholar.” Daehn 19. A lovely and complete set, even including the rare final volume on Mysia. Best described in Clain-Stefanelli’s Numismatics—An Ancient Science (pages 42–43): “Imhoof-Blumer’s name trails like a comet across the field of Greek numismatics.… Inspired by Theodor Mommsen’s idea of creating an extensive work on Greek coins as a companion to the ‘Corpus of Latin Inscriptions,’ the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin assigned to Imhoof-Blumer the direction of Die antiken Münzen Nord-Griechenlands. Such a corpus was intended to supersede all publications on the subject by describing every known coin type of each city or province within a chronological sequence, with full attention given to all available source material. This dream of a corpus of all ancient Greek coins seems to have haunted numismatists since the early 16th century, when Wolfgang Lazius first proposed such a work. But it proved too ambitious even for the late 1800s, and despite competent scholars, this gigantic German work progressed very slowly until it finally came to a halt in the late 1930s.” The rare unnumbered final volume edited by Hans von Fritze is present in this lot. Salinas, Antonio. LE MONETE DELLE ANTICHE CITTÀ DI SICILIA DESCRITTE E ILLUSTRATE. Palermo: Francesco Lao, 1867. Folio, somewhat later red half calf; spine with four raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; black morocco spine labels, gilt; red marker; original 1872-dated printed front card cover bound in. xvi, 5–52 pages; 19 engraved plates. Last two text leaves badly stained and repaired at margins. Binding a bit Cracked. Good. The rare and important original printing of this fundamental work on Sicilian numismatics. Babelon discusses the unusual publication history of this volume in the Traité (as translated by Elizabeth Saville: “Antonio Salinas, Keeper of the Museo di Palermo, concentrated his research on the coins of Sicily. ... Having taken the lead of the movement in Sicilian numismatics in which Abbé Ugdulena, Giuseppe Romano, and Giovanni Fraccia, of Palermo, were also involved, Salinas had the idea of replacing Torremuzza’s old work and putting together a new general compendium of Sicilian coins. The care with which the plates were engraved, and the knowledge the author demonstrated, makes the prolonged suspension of this great project most regrettable”). Babelon wrote at a time (1901) when only the present volume (fascicles 1 to 7, with 19 plates) had been published. It took until 1922 for the project so ably begun by Salinas to be even partially completed, with the publication of additional (if incomplete) fascicles and plates. Among other things, Salinas’s work included the first description of the Aitna tetradrachm. This original edition is very rarely offered. Clain-Stefanelli 2203*. Daehn 2974.
