BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, Unknown Issuer, White Metal Medal in support of the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, obv man in chains kneeling right, AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER around, no stop after MAN, the crown of the man’s forehead under the space between MAN and AND, the head some distance from the legend, the base of the forearm lines to the first limb of B of BROTHER, rev WHATSOEVER YE WOULD THAT MEN SHOULD DO TO YOU, DO YE EVEN SO TO THEM, second T of THAT over the O of DO, the O of SO over the first limb of M of THEM, stop some distance from the M of THEM, edge plain (D&H Middlesex 235bis I; BHM 269; Eimer 836). Scattered marks and light blemishes, otherwise better than extremely fine and retaining some brilliance, rare. The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was formed in 1787 and disbanded after it achieved the abolition of the international slave trade in 1807. At a meeting of the Society on 5 July 1787 it was resolved that a Seal be engraved for the use of the Society and on 27 August 1787 it was further resolved that Josiah Westwood Esq. be a member of the Committee to develop the Seal. On 16 October 1787 the Seal sub-committee reported that an example of the design had been submitted “expressive of an African in Chains in a supplicatory Posture with the Motto ‘Am I not a Man & a Brother’” had been approved and will be engraved. This Seal was adopted by various sympathetic organizations and reproduced on medal and tokens in the United Kingdom and, later, in the United States. While the Society encouraged the reproduction of the Seal designed by Wedgewood, there is no indication that they issued any tokens or medals directly.

Circular depression on the obverse, perhaps as made, a few edge bruises, otherwise nearly extremely fine and extremely rare. ex F S Cokayne Collection KETTLE likely refers to Henry Kettle, a die-sinker active in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

ASSOCIATIONS 4 JUNE 1798 around, rev long row of gibbets with men hanging on them, END OF BUNEPART AND THE FRENCH ARMY around, edge plain (Atkins p.203, 6; D&H Warwickshire 29). Very light brush marks and a few small spots, otherwise essentially as made and retaining almost full original brilliance, exceptionally rare in white metal, possibly unique. ex F S Cokayne Collection, acquired 5 April 1914 for £12.10.0 This medal has been attributed to John Stubbs Jorden. This was likely due to some confusion with the official Birmingham Loyal Associations medal that was produced by him to commemorate the Presentation of the Colours on 4 June 1798.

Minor spots, otherwise good extremely fine with a little faded red remaining, exceedingly rare, perhaps three examples known.
1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II long wheelbase limousine by Park Ward & Co. Registration no. TSV 970. Chassis no. LCA 71. V8 6.2 litre engine. Automatic transmission with power steering. This very elegant and rare Classic Rolls-Royce limousine is one of less than one hundred right hand drive long wheelbase Silver Cloud II with division built. It has traditional black coachwork with cream hide upholstery with electric division, folding picnic tables, air conditioning and all the usual luxuries associated with the best car in the World. It has an extensive service history file and was totally rebuilt in the late 1980s, including engine, new gearbox, overhauled axle, suspension and re-panelled body. It has been owned for the last twenty-five years by the current owner, who has had it regularly maintained by a Rolls-Royce Specialist and has covered approximately 16,000 miles during that time. Rare pair mid-18th century Chinese export London decorated famille rose vases of hexagonal tapered form, with finely reticulated sides and polychrome painted floral and insect decoration in the manner of James Giles - circa 1760, 31cm high CONDITION REPORT One vase has hairline top top and around top of base to one side. The other has long crack through neck (re-stuck) and down into the body with some glue repairs - both vases have bright enamels
Rare and fine late 17th century laburnum oyster veneered and bronze mounted strongbox, with ornate strapwork and flanking loop carrying handles, having hinged cover enclosing compartment, the hinged drop-front with internal locking catch, enclosing a pair of drawers below, 28cm wide x 16cm high x 18cm deep CONDITION REPORT Loss to area above left hand enclosed drawer below drop front, slight veneer loss left hand face top edge. Hinged lock clasp is broken off but present, although possibly incomplete. Inner sides have drilled holes for attaching strongbox to a surface, left hand hole has associated splits, fractures to left hand interior casket wall, other associated losses of central foot of each side. Rare and interesting 19th century Old London Bridge corkscrew of four pillar construction, inscribed to the pillars - 'made from the iron shoe that was taken from a pillar that was 656 years in the foundation of old London Bridge' by I Ovenston, 72 Gt. Titchfield Street, London with brass plaque to the turned wooden handle, similarly inscribed, numbered to the collar 1176, 16cm high. N.B. A similar corkscrew by the same maker set a world record price for any corkscrew at auction in these rooms on 26th November 2014
