FIRST EDITION, with the vignette on title-page, of Voltaire's defense of Newtonianism and his rebuttal of Cartesianism. Voltaire argued against the "new geology" and "new cosmology" of the day, basing his arguments on the work of Newton, his deism, and his advocacy of science as a common-sense approach. The 38 chapters touch upon mathematics, physics, and the philosophy of science including topics such as the nature of light and the formation of mountains. RARE.

* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008), IN THOUGHTS FROM THE VISIONS OF THE NIGHT WHEN DEEP SLEEP FALLETH ON MEN (1930) lithograph on paper, signed in pencil, titled and dated 1930 image size 36cm x 25cm, overall size 55cm x 40cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

18th century c1760 oak cased George III longcase clock by William Eastwood of Burnley, with a stepped caddy top on a projecting cornice and blind frieze, square glazed door flanked by two turned pillars with gesso capitals, trunk with conforming recessed pillars and a full length wavy topped door, on a square plinth with a raised panel and shaped skirting, 12� square brass dial, 11� chapter ring with Roman numerals and five-minute Arabic's, �C� scroll and castle gateway pattern spandrels and original steel hands, engraved dial centre with the Latin motto �Memento Mori� (a reminder of the inevitability of death) and the initials �JD�, with a semi-circular date aperture and engraved date ring behind, conforming �penny-moon� with lunar date aperture, dial pinned directly to a rope driven 30-hour countwheel striking movement, striking the hours on a cast bell, with pendulum and weight. OBroschur (etwas fleckig, VDeckel leicht knickspurig). Selten. Ohne sich direkt auf die Farblehren von Oswald bis Itten zu beziehen, begreift Vetter ganz im Sinne der Moderne die Farbgebung als organischen Teil der Gestaltung und nicht nur als dekoratives Beiwerk. Das Buch entsprang sicher seiner Tätigkeit als Gewerbeoberlehrer, obwohl Vetter (1886-1967) heute eher als Maler und Graphiker noch bekannt ist. Am Ende mit schönen Farbkarten unter Verwendung von Originalfarben von Arzberger und Pelikan. Auch die Typographie des Bandes erfolgte ganz im Sinne der Moderne. - 1 Ecke etwas gestaucht. Papierbedingt zart gebräunt. With 7 plates with approx. 110 mounted small colour samples of the firms Arzberger and G. Wagner-Pelikan. Red ill. paperback (somewhat stained, cover slightly creased). - Rare. At the end with beautiful colour cards using original colours by Arzberger and Pelikan. The typography of the volume was also done in the spirit of modernism. - 1 corner somewhat bumped. Paper delicately browned.

Splendid edition with the delicately erotic illustrations by Henri Fantin-Latour. 1 of 150 numbered copies on "papier vélin du Marais", with two extra suites in black on thin Japan and Bistre on China. "Rare ouvrage coté, illustré par ce grand artiste" (Mahé 84). Remarkable is the publisher's cover by Charles Meunier, one of the great master bookbinders of French Art Nouveau: cover with embedded bronze plaque representing the reduced model for a monument to the "Muse de Chénier", which was to be erected by the sculptor Denis Puech.

Von Sergio Tosi in Mailand realisiertes Künstler-Katalog Buch mit 4 Arbeiten nach seinen berühmten Teatrini, jenen Miniatur-Environments die perforierte Leinwände in lackierte Holzrahmen einschließen, die ihrerseits zu organischen Formen geformt sind. Fontana betrachtete diese Serie als den Höhepunkt seiner "Raumkonzepte" im Rahmen seines theoretischen Ansatzes des "Realistischen Spatialismus". - Wohlerhalten und selten. With 4 coloured cut-outs and perforations on two pages each by Lucio Fontana and plates after photographs by Wolleh Mulas. Artist's catalogue book realised by Sergio Tosi in Milan with 4 works based on his famous Teatrini, those miniature environments that enclose perforated canvases in lacquered wooden frames that are themselves shaped into organic forms. Fontana considered this series as the culmination of his "spatial concepts" within the framework of his theoretical approach of "Realistic Spatialism". - Well preserved and rare.

Emil Adolf Rossmässler began to publish his Iconographie der Land- und Süsswasser Mollusken in 1835 after the first affords of Louis Pfeiffer. Nearly a hundred years, thirty volumes and several editions later, it was still being issued, setting a record for the time taken to publish a conchological work. ... Few students and collectors of land shells are not familiar with the name of Louis Pfeiffer. Benefiting largely from his close acquaintance with Hugh Cuming he was able to describe many hundreds of new species, chiefly from tropical regions, and his eight-volume Monographia Heliceorum viventium listed and described all the Helices then known. While this was being issued Pfeiffer began to publish a more ambitious work, the Novitates Conchologicae, the first five volumes of which are devoted to non-marine molluscs and all of them replete with beautiful coloured illustrations. ...
