RICHTHOFEN MANFRED VON: (1892-1918) German Fighter Pilot, the most successful flying ace of World War I. An excellent vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of The Red Baron in a head and shoulders pose wearing a cap and large collared jacket, his Pour Le Merite medal proudly displayed around his neck. Signed with his name alone in pencil to the image. Partially signed across a darker area although still reasonably legible. Authentic signed photographs of Richthofen are extremely rare. EX
HANNAH JOHN: (1921-1947) British Pilot of World War II, Victoria Cross winner for his actions over Antwerp, Belgium, 15th September 1940. Hannah is the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross for aerial operations. Dark fountain pen ink signature (`J. Hannah VC`) on a piece, neatly mounted to a page removed from an autograph album alongside a small newspaper portrait and neat ink annotation by a collector. NICOLSON JAMES: (1917-1945) English Fighter Pilot of World War II, Victoria Cross winner for his actions on 16th August 1940. Nicolson was the only Battle of Britain pilot to be awarded the Victoria Cross. An extremely rare vintage signed and inscribed 4 x 6 photograph of Nicolson in a head and shoulders pose wearing his RAF uniform and cap. Signed in blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the image, `To Esme, with love & best wishes Nicky` and again signed in full, `James B. Nicolson VC`, beneath the inscription. Nicolson inscribed and presented the photograph to his brother-in-law`s wife, Esme Mary Kendall. Autographs of Nicolson are rare in any form following his tragically early death following a plane crash, and signed photographs are exceptionally rare. BATTLE OF BRITAIN: A fine page removed from an autograph album individually signed in fountain pen ink by four Royal Air Force pilots of World War II, who participated in the Battle of Britain, comprising Paddy Finucane (1920-1942, signed `B E Finucane, S/Lr, D.S.O., D.F.C.`), Douglas Bader (1910-1982, signed `Douglas Bader, Group Captain, RAF`), Francis Beamish (1903-1942, signed `F. V. Beamish, G/Capt., D.S.O., D.F.C., A.F.C.`) and William Crawford-Compton (1916-1988, signed `W V C Crompton, F/LT, D.F.C.`). Accompanied by a T.L.S. by the Station Adjutant at RAF station Kenley, one page, 4to, Kenley, Surrey, 20th March 1942, to Master Peter Osborne, returning his autograph book `having been successful in obtaining for you a few signatures including that of Squadron Leader `Paddy` Finucane.` An exceptional group of signatures, including the rare examples of Finucane (tragically killed at the age of 21 in 1942) and Beamish (declared missing in action on 28th March 1942, a little over a week after signing the album page). BADER DOUGLAS: (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognised for his important role during the Battle of Britain. Signed and inscribed 7 x 5 photograph, a classic image of Bader standing in a full length pose on the wing of his aircraft in July 1954. GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Rare D.S., Guy P. Gibson, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Lincolnshire), 17th June 1944. The partially printed document is an application form for membership of The Thirty Club in Skegness. Gibson has completed part of the form in his own hand, giving his full name, rank and address at RAF Spilby (sic) E(ast) Kirkby. Signed at the base by Gibson and countersigned by an official of the club. An ink date to the side indicates that Gibson was granted honorary membership on 19th June 1944, exactly three months before his tragic death. Together with a similar D.S. by William Reid (1921-2001) Scottish Pilot of RAF Bomber Command during World War II, Victoria Cross winner. Reid`s application for membership of The Thirty Club was made on 24th January 1944 and he too was granted honorary membership on 26th January 1944. Both documents are neatly mounted. Some light overall age toning, about VG, 2 The Thirty Club was one of the most popular entertainment venues in Skegness during World War II and finally closed in 1974.
GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. Vintage signed and inscribed 4.5 x 6 photograph, a good image of the smiling Gibson seated in a half length pose wearing his RAF uniform and holding a pipe in one hand. Signed in fountain pen ink across the image, `To Ben Twigg, with my kindest personal regards, yours, Guy P. Gibson W/C` and dated 15th September 1944 in his hand. The inscription and signature run across a darker area of the image although remain legible. Extremely rare in this form. One very small area of paper loss to the lower white border and some very minor, light surface creasing, about VG Gibson signed and dated this photograph for his friend just four days before the 26 year old Victoria Cross hero was tragically killed in an aeroplane crash at Steenburgen, Holland.

BIGSWORTH ARTHUR WELLESLEY: (1885-1961) British Air Commodore, the first pilot to succeed in dropping bombs on a Zeppelin, 17th May 1915, and the first pilot to destroy a submarine with bombs, 26th August 1915. Bigsworth served as Director of Equipment at the Air Ministry 1931-35. Bigsworth is also widely acknowledged as the inspiration for W. E. Johns`s famous character Biggles. Rare A.L.S., Arthur Wellesley Bigsworth, one page, 8vo, Air Ministry, Kingsway, London, 19th January 1934, to the autograph collector Mr. [Ashley] Cole. ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI (1969). The first man to walk on the moon. An extremely rare D.S., Neil Armstrong, one page, large folio (8.5 x 32), n.p. (London), 20th July 1969. The printed document is an original Reuters Press Agency Telex communication comprising eleven news flashes announcing the Apollo XI moon landing on 20th July 1969, in part, `Moon Descent: Houston, Texas, July 20, Reuter-Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin today began their hazardous eleven and a half minute final descent to the surface of the moon....Bogota, July 20, Reuter-The opening of Congress was postponed for an hour here today so that members of both houses could watch the Apollo moon landing on television....Urgent-Moon Descent 2 Houston: At 40,000 feet (13,000 metres) above the moon mission control old (sic, told) the moonship Eagle Everything is looking good to us. Aldrin replied Looks real good.....Moon Descent 3 Houston Mission Control: Eagle you are go to continue power descent. You are go to continue power descent (with seven minutes to go)..... Moon Descent 4 Houston (with five and a half minutes to touch down) Eagle: Got the moon right out our window....Even better than simulator....Moon Descent 5 Houston (with just over four minutes to go) Control: Altitude....6,500 metres You`re looking good Eagle. Two and a half minutes to go: Control 3,000 feet (1,000 metres) Eagle you`re looking great....you are go for landing....Flash: Astronauts landed on moon....Houston, Texas, July 20, Reuter-Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin today landed spaceship Eagle on the moon.` Signed (`Neil Armstrong`) in dark ink with his name alone to a clear area of the Telex, alongside Houston`s second report on the moon descent. An outstanding, and quite probably unique, signed document directly relating to the final stages of the historic Apollo XI moon landing. Some folds and light creasing, not affecting the signature, about VG Realising the historical significance of the Telex, the vendor, a journalist at Reuters, decided to keep the original document as a souvenir of the remarkable news stories he was witnessing. Later, the vendor`s wife attended a lecture given by Armstrong at the headquarters of General Time in Scotland, October 1974. The astronaut had been invited to launch a new watch made by Seth Thomas using quartz crystal. It was at this event that the signature of Armstrong was obtained on the Telex. Included in the lot is a General Time press release and original 6.5 x 8.5 photograph of Armstrong, originally included with the launch brochure.
APOLLO XI: A rare and unusual, large 16 x 20 signed and inscribed photograph by the three crew members of Apollo XI individually, Neil Armstrong (Commander, the first man to walk on the moon), Buzz Aldrin (Lunar Module Pilot, the second man to walk on the moon) and Michael Collins (Command Module Pilot). The engaging image simply shows Buzz Aldrin`s bootprint clearly marked on the surface of the moon. Boldly signed by each crew member with their names alone in bold black ink to the lower photographer`s mount. With a black ink stencilled inscription alongside the signatures, `To Professor Tatomir Andjelic, with warm thanks of the Crew of Apollo 11`. An outstanding, historic signed photograph. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges of the mount, otherwise VG Tatomir Andjelic (1903- ) Serbian Mathematician and Mechanics Expert.
MOORE BOBBY: (1941-1993) English Footballer, Captain of the England World Cup winning team, 1966. An unusual 7 x 10 pennant issued in honour of Bobby Moore, Captain of West Ham United and Captain of the England World Cup winners 1966, featuring a circular portrait of Moore to the centre and the emblems of West Ham and England. Signed and inscribed by Moore to a clear area in blue ink, `Best wishes to Wayne, Bobby Moore`. Professionally mounted and framed and glazed in a wooden box frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 14.5. GRACE W. G.: (1848-1915) English Cricketer. An exceptional, very fine, large 10 x 13.5 signed sepia photograph, the outstanding image depicting Grace standing in a full length pose at the crease, holding his cricket bat, and wearing his cap upon his head. Photograph by E. Hawkins & Co. of Brighton. Signed (`W. G. Grace`) in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount and dated 1896 in his hand. Professionally double matted and attractively framed and glazed in a wooden frame to an overall size of 20 x 23.5. Signed photographs of Grace of this size and quality are extremely rare and desirable. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG In 1896 Grace received the second of his two national testimonials. Collected by the MCC, the county of Gloucestershire, the Daily Telegraph and The Sportsman, the testimonial amounted to £9703 and was presented to him in recognition of his "Indian Summer" season of 1895.

CINEMA: A leather bound oblong small 4to album, in the form of a visitor`s book, containing over 180 signatures by various film stars and entertainers etc., all collected by a stunt nurse who was employed on many films at various locations around the world in the 1970s, including George Sanders, Beryl Reid, Robert Hardy, Vanessa Redgrave, Glenda Jackson, Trevor Howard, Patrick McGoohan, Timothy Dalton, Hal Wallis, Edward Woodward, Catherine Schell, Hayley Mills, Anthony Hopkins, Rod Steiger, Lee Remick, Stacey Keach, Susannah York, Richard Attenborough, Michael York, Henry Cooper, Oliver Reed, Malcolm McDowell, Richard Widmark, Christopher Lee, Burt Kwouk, Peter Sellers, Michael Caine, Treat Williams, Judy Geeson, Larry Hagman, John Sturges (rare), Jenny Agutter, Donald Sutherland, Louis Jourdan, Robin Askwith, Lance Percival, Ian Hendry, Alfie Bass, John Le Mesurier, Robert Powell, Ronald Pickup, Gordon Jackson, Martin Shaw & Lewis Collins (the three together on a single page), Toyah Willcox, Jack Douglas, Bette Davis, Zoot Money, Bernard Bresslaw, Bernard Cribbins, Roger Moore, Suzanne Dando, Maud Adams and other cast members of the James Bond film Octopussy, Denholm Elliott, Roy Kinnear etc. Each of the pages are multiple signed and many have added amusing inscriptions or comments. The majority are also neatly annotated at the head by the stunt nurse with the name and date of the film when the signatures were obtained. GERSHWIN GEORGE: (1898-1937) American Composer and Pianist. An excellent signed and inscribed printed large 4to copy of the sheet music to the song I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin from the opera Porgy and Bess. The early (possibly a first) edition of the sheet music, published by Gershwin Publishing Corp., New York, features an attractive design to the cover. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink by Gershwin to a light area at the head of the cover, ‘For Alexander Lindey-with admiration and warm greetings, George Gershwin, July 1936 (check day).’ Dated a year to the month before Gershwin’s untimely death at the age of 39. A light horizontal fold runs across the centre and with a small tear to the right clear border of the cover. A rare example of Gershwin’s autograph on an attractive piece associated with one of his most famous works. About VG Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess features the famous songs Summertime and It Ain’t Necessarily So. I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin is sung in Act II, Scene 1.
ARLEN HAROLD: (1905-1986) American Composer of Popular Music. Arlen composed the score for The Wizard of Oz featuring the classic song Over the Rainbow (1938). Extremely rare A.M.Q.S., Harold Arlen, on a 12mo stiff white card, n.p., n.d. On one side of the card Arlen has penned two bars of music, with words (`Some-where over the Rainbow`) from the song Over the Rainbow. Arlen has signed and inscribed the verso of the card in blue ink, `Mary Virginia, Sincerely, Harold Arlen`. Some very light, extremely minor staining to both sides only very slightly affecting the quotation and signature. About VG Over the Rainbow was voted as the 20th century`s Number One song by the Recording Industry Association of America and also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1939.
TIOMKIN DMITRI: (1894-1979) Ukrainian-born Composer of film scores. Academy Award winner. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Tiomkin standing in a half length pose proudly holding one of his three Oscar statuettes. Tiomkin has signed the image in blue ink to a clear area, also adding a musical quotation in his hand, comprising two bars of music which he identifies as being from High Noon. Dated Hollywood, 1962 in his hand. A rare signed photograph, enhanced by the addition of the musical quotation. A couple of very slight, minor creases to one corner, VG High Noon (1952) was an American western film starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. Tiomkin won his third Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture with his score for the film.
FLEETWOOD MAC: Signed 10 x 8 photograph by all five members of the British-American Rock band Fleetwood Mac individually, Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Christine McVie. The image depicts the band seated in a row together. All have signed in bold ink to clear areas of the image, Fleetwood adding a small doodle in his hand. Rare. About EX Christine McVie (nee Perfect) married bass guitarist John McVie in 1968 and became a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1970. They divorced in 1977, around the time that the band recorded their successful album, Rumours.
VILLAGE PEOPLE THE: Signed 10 x 8 photograph by five of the original members of the 1970s disco group individually, Randy Jones (Randy the Cowboy), Glenn Hughes (Glenn the Leatherman), David Hodo (David the Construction Worker), Felipe Rose (Felipe the Indian) and Alex Briley (Alex the G.I.). Not signed by Ray Simpson. The singers are captured standing together in full length poses in costume in a scene from the musical comedy film Can`t Stop the Music (1980). Signed by the five in bold blue ink to clear areas of the image with their names alone. Rare. One very slight, minor corner crease, VG
RENOIR PIERRE-AUGUSTE, (1841-1919) French Impressionist Painter. A good signed 6 x 9.5 photograph, being a reproduction of one of the artist`s floral paintings. Signed (`Renoir`) in bold black ink with his name alone to the lower border. Also signed by the Mayor of Cagnes beneath a short holograph statement confirming the authenticity of Renoir`s signature, dated 13th January 1917. The lower border also features the Mayor`s official purple rubber stamp. A rare and attractive signed photograph. VG
ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875) Danish Author & Poet, noted for his Children`s stories. Rare A.Q.S., Hans Christian Andersen, (a scarce example of his English signature), one page, oblong 8vo, Gad`s Hill Place, Rochester, Kent, n.d. (1857). In blue fountain pen ink Andersen has penned a quotation which he identifies as being from a work by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, `Often in a wooden house a golden room we find` Signed and dated immediately beneath the quotation. The circular stamp of the noted Rawlins collection appears in the lower right corner. An attractive example. Some light traces of former mounting, particularly to the edges, not affecting the text or signature. About VG Andersen penned this quotation at the home of Charles Dickens during his visit in 1857. He stayed with Dickens for five weeks, oblivious to Dickens` increasingly blatant hints for him to leave. Dickens` daughter said of Andersen `He was a bony bore, and stayed on and on`. Shortly after Andersen left, Dickens published David Copperfield featuring the obsequious Uriah Heep, who is said to have been inspired by Andersen. The Dane greatly enjoyed the visit and never understood why Dickens stopped answering his letters. The quotation, penned in a blue ink identical to that which Dickens himself favoured, is reproduced by Ray Rawlins in his book The Guinness Book of World Autographs (1977, page 4) and is actually only the second half of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow`s famous quotation, `Intelligence and Courtesy not always are combined; often in a wooden house a golden room we find`.
BARRIE J. M.: (1860-1937) Scottish Novelist, created Peter Pan. Fine A.L.S., J M Barrie, one page, 8vo, Strand, London, 15th September 1926, to R. Golding Bright. Penned in a more legible hand than is usually encountered, Barrie writes, `I think that arrangement for Peter Pan at the Winter Gardens Theatre this year would be good, Miss Dickson to be Peter, and in these circumstances they could have the play for this year at flat royalty of 10%.` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Barrie. Letters by Barrie referring to his most famous creation are extremely rare and desirable. Two file holes appear in the upper edge of the letter, not affecting the text or signature. Both the letter and envelope are neatly inlaid to separate mounts. About VG Barrie refers to the American-born English Actress Dorothy Dickson (1893-1995). One of her earliest stage roles was as Peter Pan in the production that the novelist refers to in his letter.
