* Titanic Disaster. A poster printed in black lettering with large point heading, for F[rederick] Best & Sons [wet and dry fish business] of 33 Millbank Street, Northam, [Southampton, April 1912], which 'Begs to call the attention of his many Patrons and others, that all takings in his shop, and on the rounds by his sons, on Saturday Next, April 27th, will be handed over to the Mayor's Fund in aid of Widows, Orphans & Dependents of the Crew who lost their lives in the Titanic Disaster. Trusting you will all endeavour to swell the takings as large as possible, by so doing you will be helping many in their sad and sudden bereavement', a little spotting and soiling, split into four along centrefolds, a little chipped at edges, 44.5 x 28cm, laid flat, framed and glazed with adjacent letter of provenance from Frederick Best's grandson. A rare, and possibly unique, survival of an emotive piece of post-Titanic ephemera. Hundreds of men from Northam and other areas of Southampton lost their lives when the Titanic went down, and the fate of all the missing passengers and crew was still not fully known when this poster was produced in the week after the disaster. The Titanic's Captain, Edward J. Smith, whose body was never found, lived with his family on Winn Road, Portswood, Southampton. (1)

Adams J151-152. Mortimer 273. A rare work on the history of Malta, being a revised edition of the Statutes of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jersualem, first published by A. Blado in Rome, in 1556. This edition was reprinted to celebrate the installation as Cardinal of Grand Master Hughes de Loubens-Verdale on the 18th December 1587. This copy complete with all plates and letter press. (1)

Gent, printed by Robert Raworth, for Mathewe Walbancke, 1636, [but later, c.1720], copper eng. frontis, A1 [title-page]-A2, B1-J4, K1-2, (36 leaves in all), armorial bookplate of Kerr to upper pastedown, with 4pp. autographed letter loosely inserted signed by J.A. Hyett on Painswick House headed paper to Lord Kerr discussing the book, dated 9. x. [18]93, a.e.g, early 19th c. blue crushed morocco gilt by Ramage, neatly rebacked retaining gilt dec. spine, small slim 4to. Date of publication supplied by the British Library Rare Book Department. This copy has the printed words to the verso of leaf A2 "Dr. Dover thought it his Duty to perpetuate the Memory of that Good Man his Grandfather.", which appears on the reprint editions. The Games were instituted in c.1605 (visited by Shakespeare), banned by the Puritans c.1650, re-instituted in 1680, banned again in 1851, and revived in the 1960s. Amongst other sports it includes shin-kicking. STC 24954. (1)

Mjr.); 1914 Star & (copy) bar (Q.M. Sjt.); British War Medal; Victory Medal, with oak palm for despatches (both Q.M. & Major); Army L.S. & G.C., Geo. V (Q.M. Sjt.); Greece, Royal Order of George I, 5th class breast badge; Serbia, Order of St. Sava, 5th class breast badge, in silver-gilt and enamel; Russia, Order of St. Stanislaus, 2nd class neck badge, by Edouard of St. Petersburg, in gold and enamel, one eagle rather crudely resoldered back into position; also minor enamel damage to the St. Sava but otherwise generally good very fine (lot) M.B.E. Major Frederick William Sharpe was born in 1872, served in South Africa, 1900-02 (Q.S.A. & 2 clasps), in France & Belgium, 1914-15, in the Balkans, 1916-18, and in South Russia, 1919-20. Sadly the recipient's Q.S.A. was lost within the family some years ago. Also sold with the medals are five large original photographs, two of Sharpe in uniform (one on horseback) and the other three of him at the Cenotaph on Armistice Day; the original Warrant for the Greek Order of St. George and a relating testimonial from the Greek town of Edessa containing thanks for Sharpe's services there; photocopies of the R.A.M.C. Q.S.A. medal roll and Sharpe's Medal Index Card (ex. P.R.O.); and the recipient's mounted group of dress miniatures, including the now lacking Q.S.A.
Qashqa'i gabbeh, Fars province, south west Persia dated 1328 AH (1910-11 AD), 6ft. x 4ft.3in. 1.83m. x 1.30m. Comparatively early dated gabbehs are quite rare. True examples of this distinctive form of Fars rug making (such pieces were made only for local domestic purposes) utilise undyed wool and are thus in shades of grey, brown and off-white - as well as sheep's wool, camel and goat can also be found in the pile of some examples. Like many old gabbehs, the present rug has a mixture of symmetric and asymmetric knotting.
A rare Chippendale period fretwork mahogany serpentine shaped silver table, with moulded edge figured top over foliate pierced frieze with arcaded lower edge and conforming scroll decorated angle section supports with tapered block feet and brass castors, probably originally with fretwork gallery and with repaired leg, 70cm high, the top 86cm x 62cm.
A rare William & Mary pair of carved stained beech elbow chairs, each with foliate carved S-scroll crest between ovoid finials to toprail, over conforming scroll edged back panel between baluster turned uprights, the shaped moulded scroll terminal arms with scroll uprights over padded seat, on turned H-stretcher base with scroll front supports with carved front stretcher between, both complete but with extensive repairs, 122cm high. See Bowett, Adam 'English Furniture 1660-1714 from Charles II to Queen Anne' p.261 for a chair of related design in the Duke of Buccleuch's collection at Drumlanrig Castle.
St. Lucia 1881 Postal Fiscal Stamp 'SHILLING STAMP', orange, with the surcharge variety 'SHILDING' for 'SHILLING' officially corrected with the use of red ink. Tied by the St. Lucia code 'C' date-stamp of 11 December 1896 on a small envelope registered to Barbados. Oval-framed 'R', manuscript reference number '7559' and Barbados arrival date-stamp on the reverse. Some envelope creasing but good appearance and rare. When purchased from Stanley Gibbons Ltd., it was stated that only two examples had been recorded. Stanley Gibbons No. F4b variety.

GEORGE VI - WW2: Four "Traveller's Ration Books" issued to the Royal Family on 8th July 1940 by the Ministry of Food. Each 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; wire stitched as issued, in excellent condition. The pink printed front wrappers filled-in by hand with the "consumer's name & address", i.e. His Majesty The King, Buckingham Palace, London S.W.1; Her Majesty The Queen, Buckingham Palace London S.W.1; Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth, The Royal Lodge, Windsor, Berks.; & Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret, The Royal Lodge, Windsor, Berks. Only a few meat, bacon & ham, butter & margarine, cooking fats, & sugar coupons remain within together with "spare" coupons. George VI insisted that he and his family lived off rations in common with his subjects; a rare and evocative survival.

A rare Charles I South Eastern provincial seal top spoon, the small terminal scratched 'I' over 'NE' over 'EN', struck once in the bowl with a fleur-de-lys and on the back of the stem with another fleur-de-lys and the maker's mark WD (conjoined) by William Dodson, Lewes 1630-40, 5.9in (15cm) long, 0.8oz.
