HINDLE JAMES 22.XVII.18 R.A.F.” A rare group of medals to a real character, many of Huck’s extensive handwritten diaries are available to view on-line. Harold Hindle James, known as Huck to his family was born on 1st March 1894 in Clifton, Bristol the son of a college professor. Most of his childhood was spent in the UK but between 1903 and 1906 he and his family were living in India. His father remained in India as the Principal of the Presidency College in Calcutta when the family returned. He attended Dulwich College and in 1912 he went on to read English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford. On the outbreak of war in August 1914 Huck gave up his studies and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry. In March 1915 he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps serving as an Observer in 10 Squadron later moving to 14 Sqdn in Egypt. He returned to Britain in May 1916 to train as a pilot (Aviators Certificate issued 17th July 1916, no.3225). In September of the same year he returned to Egypt, stationed on the Suez Canal he provided air support for the Allied advance across the desert to El Arish. In January 1917 he moved to Rabegh in the Hedjaz, in what is now Saudi Arabia, where he supported the ‘Arab Revolt’ against the Turks conducting both reconnaissance and bombing missions assisting the forces on the ground one of whom included Lawrence of Arabia. After this he spent a short spell in Aden and Palestine before he was invalided back to Britain in June 1917. In Summer 1918 he returned to active duty on the Italian front as a flight commander in 66 Sqdn. carrying out patrols and bombing missions. In October 1918 he was involved in the destruction of an Austrian balloon but in doing so was wounded (GSW to the cheek) and was forced to land in no-man’s land on an island in the Piave river where he was later rescued by Italian forces. Post war he was posted to Egypt, to Constantinople and then to Iraq. 2 years in Britain followed after which he returned to Iraq from 1924 to 1929. Invalided out of the RAF in January 1931 he then spent several years travelling until in 1935 he was back in Egypt where he was offered a position as a volunteer civilian liaison officer at RAF Headquarters. He travelled extensively through the Middle East making contact with many leading Royal and Political figures, his interference in politics though upset the British Embassy in Cairo to the extent that they attempted, unsuccessfully, to get him expelled from the country. Post Second World War, he continued to be based in Egypt carrying out charitable activities and making occasional personal trips out of the country until in June 1967, during the Six Day War, and at the age of 73, he was arrested, mistreated and expelled by the Egyptian authorities. Suffering from the advanced stages of cancer he moved to Malta in October 1968 where he died on 2nd February 1969. O.B.E. Military Division, London Gazette 15th March 1929 – The KING has been graciously pleased to give orders for the following promotion in, and appointments to, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services rendered in connection with the operations against the Akhwan in the Southern Desert, ‘Iraq during the period November, 1927-May, 1928. Flight Lieutenant Harold Hindle James, Royal Air Force. Italian War Merit Cross (Croce Di Guerra), London Gazette 8th February 1919 – Captain Harold Hindle James. During the Allied Hundred Days Offensive that was launched on 8 August 1918, the battalion took part in the 8th Brigade's advance up the treacherous Morcourt Valley, subsequently achieving a considerable feat by capturing the town of Vauvillers. The battalion fought its last battle of the war in late September alongside the US 30th Infantry Division, when they breached the German defences along the Hindenburg Line as part of the final Allied offensive of the war. Aimed at the Le Catelet Line near Bellicourt, the battalion began its advance on Nauroy on 29 September, moving on the left flank beside elements of the US 117th Infantry Regiment, with the 32nd Battalion in support. The attack proved highly successful and 59 prisoners were captured along with four field guns and a quantity of German small arms. Against this the battalion lost 17 men killed and 63 wounded.

Whilst running on the ground he was being fired on from all sides, realising he was behind enemy lines he rapidly took off and returned to his own airfield flying at 300 feet. 16 of his victories were claimed after this event. Outstanding WW1 Other Ranks 02 Pattern Service Dress Tunic of a Military Medal Winner in the 8th (Service) Battalion Somerset Light Infantry with all the Original Battle Insignia of the 63rd Brigade 37th Infantry Division, a true WW1 time capsule, this tunic is untouched and just as it was hung up after WW1 had ended. The standard other ranks 1902 pattern tunic configured in the standard form with four pockets and the two pleats to the collar area. Tunic is complete with the original cloth battle insignia to both arms and cloth formation sign for the 37th Infantry division being the yellow horseshoe. Sergeants rank chevrons to both arms. One arm with a metal Lewis Gunners proficiency badge on a blue circular backing cloth, which at the time of publication we have no idea if the backing colour is significant in any way. Three overseas service stripes to the lower sleeve and the other sleeve has a charming field made two wound stripes. Above the breast pocket is the medal ribbon for the Military Medal (M.M) awarded for bravery in the field. Somerset Light Infantry regimental metal shoulder titles to the shoulder straps, one of these is damaged. Twist cord lanyard and a original 1916 dated trench whistle with the leather whistle strap still fixed to the top tunic pocket button. White lined pockets to the interior with no paper label remaining. Tunic does sadly have some moth damage but this all adds to the character of the tunic. It is incredibly rare to find WW1 other ranks tunics with the original battle insignia still in place as many of these tunics were destroyed once they come off the front line in 1918 and were replaced with the walking out pattern tunic which mostly appear on the market today. This actual tunic can be seen on the front cover of the reference book “WW1 British Battle Insignia” by Military Mode publishing.

Very Rare WW1 British “Hypo” Smoke Helmet, being a mint un-issued example produced in the blue / grey flannel shirt cloth material. The front of the helmet has the original mica eye lens and behind this the wooden protective block still sewen into the helmet to protect the eye lens. Just some very light staining in areas and fold marks. These smoke hoods were the first to be introduced to British troops in 1915. The hoods were impregnated with chemicals and moistened which was efficient in neutralising the effects of the poison gas. The hood would simply be tucked into the collar of the soldiers tunic. The later types of Hypo helmet had screw-in metal eye pieces as the mica lenses were prone to damage, which would then make the hood useless as protection. See page 152-153 of “Campaign 1915 – Uniforms & Equipment of the British Servicemen in the First World War” by Chris Pollendine.

Lot 767

Rare WW1 British Satchel for a P-Type Gas Hood, the khaki cloth satchel is complete with the original closing flap, single brass button remaining and the original cloth shoulder strap with three brass buttons. Old museum / collection number to the underside of the flap. Bag shows some wear with staining and loose stitching, mostly to one side, but a very rare and seldom encountered item of WW1 British soldiers equipment from the early part of WW1.

Lot 768

Rare WW1 British P-Type Gas Tube Helmet, being made in the correct double layer of flannel cloth material and the interior being lined in a pyjama striped cloth. Helmet is fitted with the original metal eye pieces which have rusted and left stained imprints on the cloth when it has been folded. Helmet also has the original metal and rubber topped valve for breathing which continues inside the hood and the rubber mouth piece still present. To the lower section of the hood appears to be an ink stamp “P12” running diagonally. The hood shows some wear and has some rusting stains and a couple of small holes. These early gas protection items are extremely rare to find, with many reproductions to be found on the collecting market. These helmets were quickly introduced to replace the earlier Hypo helmet. They were constructed with two layers of the flannel cloth so that the helmet could have more chemicals added. The introduction of the tube valve was also to help the British soldier breathe easier during a gas attack. They were called “P” helmets because of the chemicals used to impregnate them, sodium phenolate and glycerin, which protected against chlorine and phosgene. Although at the time of production the Germans had not used these chemicals, British intelligence believed a attack with them was imminent so this led to the pre-emptive development. See page 154-155 of “Campaign 1915 – Uniforms & Equipment of the British Servicemen in the First World War” by Chris Pollendine.

Lot 798

Rare WW1 Rifle Mounted Trench Periscope, metal body periscope with field grey paint finish to the exterior. Angled glass lens to the bottom and top section. Complete with mounting fitting. Some dents and rusting but generally good condition. These periscopes were mounted to rifle blocks to enable troops to see what they were firing at without having to raise their heads above the trenches and draw fire from enemy snipers etc. Used by most of the combat nations, one of this type of periscope can be seen in use by a French soldier on the Western Front in the book “The French Army in the First World War 1914-18” by Mirouze & Dekerle page 366.

These tools had to be sturdy and small so the pioneers could work in small spaces. These were often used as weapons also when they came face to face with British tunnellers, the close quarters fighting in the tunnels under no mans land was brutal and barbaric. 58 ½ cms in length. Lot 1158

Extremely Rare Heinrich Himmler Personal Presentation Copy of Der Nibelungenlied to then SS-Gruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich in March 1940, the large leather bound hardback presentation copy of the famous Germanic poem, with the inside front page having a personal handwritten dedication presenting the book to the infamous and much feared member of the German SS Reinhard Heydrich. The blue ink dedication is signed at the end by Heinrich Himmler and is dated 7.III.1940. The book itself was published in Berlin in 1940 by Richard Wagner. Housed in the original card slipcase. This famous German poem was written in around 1200, in Middle High German. The poet was anonymous but is believed to have come from Passau. The poem is based on a heroic Germanic legend and as such was highly regarded by members of the Third Reich for the ideology it shared and with the Germanic traditions. Reinhard Heydrich was one of the most feared man in the Third Reich, even Adolf Hitler called him “The Man with the Iron Heart”. Heydrich was the Deputy Protector of Bohemia and Moravia and rose to the SS rank of SS-Obergruppenfuhrer before he died from blood poisoning after an assassination attempt on him by Czech and Slovak agents as part of the S.O.E (Special Operations Executive) on 4th June 1942. Heydrich was greatly responsible for many of the atrocities carried out against civilians and military targets in occupied Europe, especially in Czechoslovakia, gaining the nickname “The Butcher of Prague”. He is said to have been responsible for coming up with the final solution. Any item relating to Reinhard Heydrich is extremely rare and seldom does any item relating or actually presented to him come up on the collecting market.
