Foreign Coins and Medals, Jamaica, Clarendon, Halse Hall, Henry de la Beche, small silver Good Conduct Award, c.1823-24, by Tommaso Saulini, bust l., rev. HALSE HALL JAMAICA REWARD FOR GOOD CONDUCT, 24mm. (BDM.VI, 683; Roehrs 1554; Brandon 996), virtually mint state, extremely rare*ex Watts collection Sir Henry Thomas de la Beche, CB, FRS (1796-1855), geologist; his lifelong interest in geology was first kindled as a boy when he lived in Lyme Regis. He became a Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1817 and was elected its president in 1847. He wrote several works on geology and was the mastermind behind the compilation of the Ordnance Survey map of Britain, begun in 1832. This medal was intended as a reward for the slaves working on the Halse Hall estate that De la Beche inherited from his father, a slave-owner. It was at Halse Hall that De La Beche wrote his geological survey of Jamaica and also published Notes on the then condition of the negroes. Neither Roehrs nor Brandon had an example of this medal in silver. See also the following lot. Whether any of these medals was actually awarded appears not to be recorded, they are nearly always found in excellent condition.

Foreign Coins and Medals, USA, Boston, City Medal, issued by the School Committee, engraved silver medal, 1796, crossed quills above an open book, ‘The GIFT of FRANKLIN’, rev. inscription, ‘Adjudged by the School Committee as A REWARD of MERIT to Samuel Grant 1796’, 35.5mm., pierced with small ring for suspension, good very fine and extremely rare ex Watts collection Samuel Grant was to become a well respected citizen of Boston, where he was born on 16 April, 1783, the son of Moses Grant (1742-1817), ‘who refused to pay tribute to English tyranny…’ He later a deacon of the Brattle Street Church. His grandfather, another Samuel, lived on Union Street. Grant traded first as Grant and Stone and then in 1817 established the The Line of Boston and Philadelphia Packets. He was a director of the Franlink Fire Insurance Company and represented Baring Brothers in Boston. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register records ‘to his great satisfaction his possession of one of the first Franklin Medals’. In fact, the medal was first awarded in 1792 and Samuel Grant appears on the official list as one of only four Franklin Scholars for 1796. These early medals are rare with, in 1792, 14 awarded; in 1793, 18; 1794, none; 1795, 5; 1797 none; 1798, 3; 1799, 7; and 1800, 2.

Total gross weight approximately 14ozs, largest 66mm, smallest 45mm high CONDITION REPORT General overall condition very good, some surface wear and scratchng primarily from one inside the other. No signs of major damage or repair. Beaker rims are very slightly distorted and nicked. Marks are all clear. Internal gilding is pale and shows signs of use. Amorial engraving quite crisp

Rare Victorian brass skeleton timepiece of two week duration, by John Pace, Bury St. Edmunds, no. 320 - the spire-shaped frame cast of 6mm thick plates with chamfered edges joined by turned pillars, the ormolu skeleton chapter ring with Arabic numerals and blued hands, the going barrel movement configured so as to rise up the central section turning the spoke crossings terminating in a deadbeat escapement, the pendulum with 'axe-headed' bob and steel rod with rise and fall regulation screw above, to the rear a series of pulleys united by a small fusee chain combine to drive the hands, the whole raised on an oval stepped brass base, signed - 'John Pace Bury St. Edmunds 320', on oval mahogany plinth on bun feet, under glass dome, the timepiece 32cm high, 41.5cm including dome (key present) CONDITION REPORT General overall condition is very good. Movement is clean and in full working order. Plates have some minor nicks to sharp edges. Mahogany plinth may not be original and has some damage to veneer. Dome is possibly a replacement
