BRITISH COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Historical Medals, Richard III (1452-1483-1485), Dassier’s Medal in damascened Copper, bust of the King right, rev a Fury holding a dagger and the crown, lies on the bodies of the two murdered Princes, 41mm (MI p.19; Eisler 259/20d, damascened example illustrated, p.277). Good very fine and rare.

II. CON. V. ENG, rev three regal crowns, VER.L. SCHOL. et FRANRY. [Ireland, Scotland & France], 45mm (MI 455/43). Fair to fine, excessively rare. MI lists the medal from an example in the British Museum, refering to it as “Unique”
RUSSIAN Commemorative MEDALS, Nicholas Joseph, Count Esterhazy (1714-1790), of Galantha, Soldier and Patron of the Arts and “Gallant Guardian of the Hungarian Crown”, The Bestowal of the Order of St Andrew, Copper Medal, 1755, by Friedrich Wilhelm Dubut, bust of Esterhazy right, wearing Sash, Badge and Star of the Order, rev Esterhazy bows to the Empress Elizabeth, who presents the Order, a servant stands behind, 64mm (Diakov 100; Wurz 1929). Extremely fine and rare.
RUSSIAN Commemorative MEDALS, Baron Johann Albrecht von Korff (1697-1766), Bibliophile and ‘homme du monde’, Copper Memorial Medal, by J E Bauert, 1766, bust right, hair in queue, rev Art stands at monument with two putti, emblems of learning around, 56mm. Extremely fine, rare. von Korff was President of the Imperial Scientific Academy of St Petersburg (1734-1740), before being posted to the diplomatic service in Copenhagen. He later (1745-1748) lived in Stockholm, but because of his interference with domestic policy was obliged to return to Copenhagen, where he died in 1766. It was said that his passion for books was equalled by his passion for women and this led to his financial downfall. His library was sold to Catherine II, the Great, who let him retain it till his death. The library was then transferred to St Petersburg and in 1783 to Gatshina. After the death of the Tsar Paul in 1801, it was inherited by the Grand Duke Constantin.
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AMERICA Coinage, Mexico, Republic, So-Called Pattern 8-Escudos or 8-Reales, undated, c.1840’s, struck in brass, eagle on cactus, rev wreath, PARIS / T, plain edge (cf KM Pn17, 19, etc, obverse). Struck with a curious cental ‘lug’ on the reverse, very fine, rare. The lug might have once been some sort of suspension device, making the coin a display item. See also lot 1692, a somewhat similar piece for Uruguay.
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AMERICA Coinage, Uruguay, Republic, so-called Pattern 8-Reales, undated, c.1844, struck in brass, large oval armorial shield, rev wreath, SARANDI / YTUSAINGO / RINCON DE LAS / GALLINAS, corded edge (cf KM 10, obverse). Struck with a curious cental ‘lug’ on the reverse, very fine, rare. The lug might have once been some sort of suspension device, making the coin a display item. See also lot 1684, a somewhat similar piece for Mexico.
FOREIGN COINS, Crusader States, Antioch, Raymond Roupen (1216-1219), Helmet Denier, class L/J mule, RUPINVS, helmeted bust left, crescent in left field and star in right field, rev AITIOCIIIA, cross with crescent in second quarter, 0.82g (see K Shea, NC 2005, pp.279-284). Edge split, otherwise about very fine and very rare. It is not known for certain whether class J preceded class K or vice versa, and this mule appears to support the hypothesis that class K in fact preceded class J. The style of the lettering on the obverse is also noticeably different from other coins of Raymond Roupen, suggesting that the obverse die was used very early in his coinage.
INDIAN COINS, Princely States Coinage, Indore, Silver Nazarana Rupee, obv citing the name and titles of Muhammad Akbar II, rev citing name of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, year 1223 (KM 8); Jaipur, Madho Singh, Silver Nazarana Rupee, 1919 year 40 (KM 147); Jaipur Copper Nazarana Paisa, in the name of Edward VIII and Man Singh II (KM 167).
