Lot 342

Extremely Rare WW1 British Tank Crew Protective Helmet, this specially produced helmet as issued to the WW1 British tank crews is constructed from four sections of deep brown leather which is riveted together along the central seam and side panels. Interior of the helmet retains its original leather sweatband and cork spacers. The helmet retains the remains of the original brown leather chinstrap. Some scuffing and areas of dryness to the leather but overall a very good example of one of the, if not the rarest item of WW1 British headdress. These helmets were issued to British tank crews but they were not popular with tankers and many crew members did not use them. They were to be worn with the tank splatter mask but these were found not to be fit for purpose as shell splinters could penetrate the leather body. It is said that also from a distance they looked like the German steel helmet, so on the confusion of the battle field could have been picked off by British infantry and snipers.

Interior of the shell has the Berndorfer bear stamping and size 66 stamp. Metal liner band and three leather liner pads. The liner pads have at some point had a oil protective put over them. Part of a leather chinstrap remains. The helmet shows wear and has some areas of pitting but generally still a good example of a rare WW1 steel helmet. Helmet has a collection label attached, this helmet is part of a small Scandinavian collection we are selling in this auction.

Lot 462

Rare Imperial German Model 1918 Ear Cut Out Steel Combat Helmet, untouched example of the scarce model German helmet from WW1 which was issued to cavalry and signals troops. The helmet has the remains of the original field grey paint finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Lot 475

Rare German Army (Heer) Infantry Regimental Standarte (Flag) Captured by Troops from the American 417th Regiment 76th Division, superb and iconic item of Third Reich militaria being the official infantry regimental standard which is constructed from fine quality white silk with wire fringing to three sides of the flag. To the centre of each side is a finely embroidered large German army eagle in black picked out in brown and with bullion wire to the eagles beak and talons. The eagle is set within a silver wire embroidered wreath placed upon a large black Iron Cross. Black swastikas to each corner which are outlined in silver aluminium wire brocade. The flag has been personalised by the capturing troops with various names and details written to the front. The flag is mounted to a replacement pole which is fitted with an original aluminium regimental standard banner top with stampings to the base. The banner top has had the swastika removed. Also complete with the rare pair of streamers for the German army 4x4 regimental standarte, flat bullion wire braid with black and red strips to the edges and bullion tassels to the ends. Attached to the streamers are the original metal shield plaques with Army downward winged eagles and dates “16 MARZ 1935” and “16 MARZ 1936”. Some scratches to the metal plaques but the bullion remains free of any oxidisation. The flag has some areas of staining and wear. The flag has at one point had some areas of professional repair but this does not detract from an incredibly rare and wonderful focal point for any collection. The 76th Infantry Division arrived in England, 20 December 1944, where it received additional training. It landed at Le Havre, France, 12 January 1945, and proceeded to the Limesy concentration area. The Division moved to Beine east of Reims and then to Champlon, Belgium, 23 January, to prepare for combat. Relieving the 87th Division in defensive positions along the Sauer and Moselle Rivers in the vicinity of Echternach, Luxembourg, 25 January, the 76th sent out patrols and crossed the Sauer, 7 February, and breached the Siegfried Line in a heavy assault. The advance continued across the Prum and Nims Rivers, 25–27 February. Katzenkopf fortress and Irrel fell on 28 February and the attack pushed on toward Trier, reaching the Moselle, 3 March. Driving across the Kyll River, the division took Hosten, 3 March, Speicher on 5 March and Karl on 10 March; swung south and cleared the area north of the Moselle, crossing the river, 18 March, near Mülheim an der Mosel. Moving to the Rhine, the 76th took over defenses from Boppard to St. Goar and crossed the Rhine at Boppard, 27 March. It drove east and took Kamberg in a house-to-house struggle, 29 March. A new attack was launched 4 April and the Werra River was reached the next day. The attack continued in conjunction with the 6th Armored Division; Langensalza fell and the Gera River was crossed, 11 April. Zeitz was captured after a violent struggle, 14–15 April, and the 76th reached the Mulde River on 16 April, going into defensive positions to hold a bridgehead across the Mulde near Chemnitz until VE-day.
