The maker confirms that the gun was built in 1883 for Captain Collier with 24-inch barrels as a shot and ball gun with double cocking trigger. It conforms with Thorn`s Patent 1242 of 1881 covering the rotating tumbler and trigger mechanism. The guns has been extensively refurbished to the very highest standard and was re-proofed for nitro in 2005. It is thought that this is the only example of a 12-bore four-barrel gun that Lancaster built.
THOMAS HORSLEY. A RARE 12-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD PATENT HAMMER GUN, NO. 1602. 30-inch steel barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers about true cylinder borings, the frame, sliding top lever, non-rebounding hammers and locks with fine border and scroll engraving, retaining traces of hardening colour, hammers with self-retracting strikers, 14 1/2-inch well figured stock with engraved steel butt plate, 7lb. 2oz., black powder proof, bores pitted. The gun was built in 1867 for Captain Mickery, Royal Engineers. The gun is extremely unusual in that both the action and the barrels are stamped "STEEL". This is a very early use of steel barrels in a sporting shotgun, the barrels appearing to have different hardness of steel used at the breech ends and for the rest of the barrels. Provenance: The Yannaghas Collection. The gun incorporates two of Horsley`s best known patents, namely the "top lever no. 2410" and "the retracting strikers no. 1138".

Webb-Particulars of the"Great Eastern"...Ship authenticated edition (second issue), engraved frontispiece and plan, 2 pp. advertisements at end, some marginal soiling, edges a little frayed, p.30 two lines of text crossed through in pen, modern half calf, original upper wrapper bound in (soiled and with ink signature at head), 8vo, 1857. ***A rare pamphlet describing the S.S. Great Eastern. Almost certainly printed in the first half of 1857 and heralding the ship`s impending launch in `July or August` although the ship was not actually floated until January 1858 due to technical difficulties. The ship, under construction at Millwall, became a tourist attraction as Brunel`s partners, strapped for cash as the costs spiralled out of control, encouraged sightseers to pay to come and view the works much to Brunel`s consternation. This pamphlet was probably produced to sell to those sightseers or to encourage people to take a trip out to Millwall to view the ship..
