Rare First World War attributed Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company Pick, made by the Hardy Patent Pick Company of Sheffield, the Acme No 1 pick was used by miners in the UK, double edged with detachable head for ease of shapening and retempering, top strap marked with makers name and stamped with broad arrow, the letters 'TE' and the date 1915, ash shaft stamped 'H. LEATHER R.E.', records show that 132573 Sapper Hubert Leather, born 1893, trade, miner, enlisted on 5th October 1915, finding that he 'posesses the necessary qualifications for rating as a tunneller..' he joined 252 Tunnelling Company R.E. entering France on 25th October 1915, 252 Tunnelling Company was engaged with digging the H3 Mine under the Hawthorne Ridge Redoubt during the preperations for the battle of the Somme, he later joined 175 Tunnelling Company R.E. in the Ypres Salient, he is shown as entitled to the 1914-15 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal, and Victory Medal, a label attached to the pick reads, 'Note by Sapper H. Leather T.C., He was putting a borehole in a sap when the Germans heard him, his auger hit some timbers in an old gallery, the Germans, who must have been listening, charges ready, blew their counter charge, Leather was blown about 10 yards back along the gallery, crawled back to the officers dugout & was given a halful mug of rum, he waited 2 hours for the gas to clear & was sapping there again the same night', pick head 30 cm in length, ash shaft 70 cm

While Dickinson published 7 poems during her lifetime in magazines, these posthumous volumes comprise the first published collections of her poetry, which were edited by her close friends Mabel Loomis Todd and T.W. Higginson. Dole published a letter summarizing a paper written by Todd on Dickinson 's life and works, published in Book News in March 1892, noting that Todd was "one of the comparatively few who were admitted to anything like intimacy with the weird recluse of Amherst" (Buckingham, 361). Dole also noted that the Indian pipe decoration on the front covers of the present works was made from the panel given to Dickinson as a gift from Todd (Buckingham, 349).
