JUGYOKU: A RARE WOOD AND STAG ANTLER NETSUKE OF A KAPPA PLAYING THE CUCUMBERBy Ryukosai Jugyoku, signed Jugyoku 寿玉Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)A humorous wood netsuke of a kappa holding a green-stained stag antler cucumber in both hands, as if playing the biwa, the eyes and fangs inlaid in bone. The details are very finely carved. Himotoshi through the carapace in the back and signed underneath the right leg JUGYOKU.HEIGHT 3.3 cmCondition: Very good condition. The two arms are carved separately to hold the cucumber in place.Provenance: US private collection.Jugyoku was particularly skilled in combining various materials, the kappa holding a green-stained cucumber being one of his favored subjects. The present netsuke depicts this kappa in a particularly amusing and rather unique manner, holding his cucumber like an instrument.According to folklore there are two ways to escape a kappa-encounter unharmed. One is to feed it with a cucumber, which is the kappa's favorite food and the other is to bow, as kappa are exceedingly polite creatures and find it difficult to resist returning a bow. This is a problem for the kappa as the cavity on top of their head retains water, and if damaged or its liquid is lost, the kappa is severely weakened.Auction comparison:A closely related wood netsuke by Gyokusai was sold at Zacke, Asian Art Discoveries, 27 January 2020, Vienna, lot 592 (sold for 5,688 EUR).

BOOKS, MILITARY INTELLIGENCE - MI9: a very interesting small collection from the library of H.B.A. de Bruyne, 'Bruno' of MI9. Firstly, an association copy: NEAVE, Airey, 'Saturday at MI9' (without jacket), 1st Hodder, 1969. Signed and dedicated thus: 'Bruno, Many thanks for your help, Airey'. Neave was code-named 'Saturday'. This comes with a copy of a letter sent by de Bruyne to Airey Neave, then a Conservative MP pointing out that a reception at parliament (ordered by Denis Healey, then Minister of Defence) for resistance groups had, in issuing invitations to this gathering, ignored MI9, and that this might have been so because most of the MI9 group had died as they were 'of the 1914-1918 vintage'. He asks Neave to pay tribute at the meeting to Norman Crockett 'founder and architect of MI9'. Then: FOOT and LANGLEY, 'MI9 Escape and Evasion 1939-1945', 1st Bodley Head, 1979. Both were members of MI9. And: BULLOCH, John, 'M.I.5. The Origin and History of the British Counter-Espionage Service'. 1st 1963, Arthur Barker (no jacket). With: BROME, Vincent, 'The Way Back'. Cassell 1st 1957 (no jacket) inscribed, we think, to 'Bruno' with his thanks 'Gordon'. possibly his brother Brig. Gordon de Bruyne. And lastly, HUTTON, Clayton, 'Official Secret' (no jacket), 1st Max Parrish, 1960. Hutton worked at MI9 and was code-named 'Q' from which the James Bond series got its inventor of gadgets. This is a rare book from a minor publisher. Five interesting volumes.

Rare American boxing inscription and autograph, 1918, included in: First World War autograph/memorabilia book, with Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry interest. The rare inscription with autograph is of Johnny Kilbane (1889-1957), the American boxing legend who was World Featherweight Champion for a record 11 years, from 1912-23. In Kilbane's hand: "Here's to it and to it again/If you don't do it, when you get a chance to do it, you may never get to it to do it again/All good wishes/Johnny Kilbane/Sgt Major American Aviation Corps/Featherweight Champion of the World/24-3-18." The book was apparently compiled by Sergeant J. R. Roberts of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. The book has about 50 signed inscriptions and paintings by injured soldiers from various British regiments and by a number of nurses, who were at the Maudsley Military Hospital at Camberwell, London and the King's College Military Hospital, which was sited opposite it. Both hospitals are mentioned a number of times in the book, and Sergeant Roberts' military service record shows that he was a patient at the King's College Hospital.Johnny Kilbane's inscription is intriguing and important, and relates to a phase of his life previously unknown to his descendants, whom the vendor contacted and informed about his research. The United States Army Air Service, before it was established on 24 May 1918, was known as Aviation Section, Signal Corps. It seems that Kilbane was attached to this section, and that the "Aviation Corps" of his inscription is his shortened version. A large number of US Army Aviation Section ground crews were sent to the UK on the Olympic (sister-ship to the Titanic), arriving at Liverpool on 5 March 1918. The squadrons were split into smaller "flights" and sent to train at different bases. The US Army Air Service men arrived in the UK just 19 days before Kilbane's inscription. This is speculation, but it seems likely that Kilbane was sent over with the men to train them in boxing skills, similar to the training duties he is known to have performed at Camp Sherman, Ohio, where he trained American soldiers in fitness and self-defence from October 1917 (qty)

In the lower left corner, Dean signed his name in black ink and handwrote his social security number and telephone number. The contract guaranteed that he would have at least five lines of dialogue, was expected to work 18.5 hours, and would be paid a total of $162.50.Prior to achieving movie stardom with his lead role in the film East of Eden (Warner Brothers, 1955), Dean appeared in numerous television series. Dennis Hopper's CIDALC prize selection citation for The Last Movie (Universal Pictures, 1971), Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia (32nd Annual Venice Film Festival August 25 - September 6, 1971) signed by Gian Luigi Rondi. Together with black and white photos of Hopper receiving the award and of the award itself, as well as various documents relating to the festival: a brochure for the festival, two stapled schedule booklets, letter from festival President Marcel Carne, and two copies of press material. Please note: this lot includes the award citation only, not the physical award. The Last Movie was a passion project for Hopper, who'd been trying to get the film produced since the mid-1960s. Following the incredible financial success of Easy Rider (Columbia Pictures, 1969), Hopper was given a million dollar budget and carte blanche to make the film. The experimental, metafictional drama (which focuses on a movie stuntman in Peru following the death of a fellow stuntman) was a critical and financial disappointment upon release, but has since been re-evaluated and garnered a cult following. This award was a rare and noteworthy acknowledgment of the film's merits.19.25 x 19.75 inches (largest, unrolled)PROVENANCE Property from the Life and Career of Dennis Hopper
