Helmet has the American eagle and US shield badge of the organisation to the front. Interior of the helmet retains its original two colour leather liner system and leather chinstrap. Some rusting to the exterior of the shell but generally a good example. The American Field Service was a group of American Volunteers who served overseas, mostly with the French Army, before America entered the war in 1917. The volunteers were mostly medical service and drove ambulances, transporting wounded men to behind the lines. At its height, the Field Service numbered 2,000 volunteers and operated not only on the Western Front in France but also in the battle areas of Italy, Greece, Serbia and Albania. The service attracted young volunteers from the American literati: college students, poets and writers including an eighteen-year-old Ernest Hemingway who used the experience as the basis of his novel A Farewell to Arms. The volunteers were expected to pay for their transportation to Europe and for their meals while there. The American Ambulance Field Service operated as an independent volunteer agency until America's entrance into the war in 1917 when it was absorbed by the American Army.

Very Rare WW1 British 1st Pattern “Hypo” Gas Hood, blue grey flannel cloth face mask with mika viewing rectangle, which has cracked and worn. The hood has fold marks and is dirty and stained. These hoods were first introduced in June 1915 but were only manufactured until September 1915, when the design was changed to the still rare but more commonly seen gas hood. This type of mask was designed by Lieutenant Colonel Dr Cluny Macpherson CMG FRCS. The German’s first used poisonous gas as a weapon at the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, the first types of protection were not practical, so Macpherson came up with this design, when he saw that the Germans were using a bag type cover for their troops when gas attacks were launched. These hoods are also often referred to as smoke hoods. Due to the short production life of this type of gas hood, very few are still in existance.
