A MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID BLACK LACQUER RECTANGULAR TRAY, JOSEON DYNASTYKorea, 16th-17th century. With a wide flaring rim, superbly decorated with stylized lotus flowers on scrolling vines, to the interior with stylized auspicious symbols topping each flower, the base lacquered cinnabar red. Provenance: Gerard Hawthorn LTD Oriental Art, London, UK, 24 April 2008. A noted private collection in Abcoude, Netherlands, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice, erroneously describing the piece as Chinese and from the Ming dynasty, accompanies this lot. Condition: Excellent condition commensurate with age, old wear, crackling, a small loss to one corner with associated touchup, the interior with four and the exterior with two replaced inlays (inspected under strong blue light) out of more than 200 inlays in total. Weight: 639 g Dimensions: Size 4.3 x 31.7 x 19.2 cmAlthough they superficially resemble and, indeed, are often incorrectly termed as orchids, or even peony blossoms, the flowers depicted on this tray actually are stylized lotus blossoms, as indicated by the appearance of the associated buds. The stylized blossoms, which are known as byeonryeon in Korean, likely first appeared in the silk textiles of China's Song dynasty (960–1279). Popularized in Chinese porcelains of the Yuan (1279–1368) and Ming (1368–1644) dynasties, the foreign lotus design, or fanlianwen, spread to Korea early in the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) and was incorporated into the decorative schemes of Korean blue-and-white porcelain, buncheong ware, and inlaid lacquers. Though little is known of the earliest history of lacquer-making in Korea, archaeological evidence indicates that Korean craftsmen were making lacquered objects at least two thousand years ago, in the late Neolithic and early historic periods. By the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) Koreans were producing elegant lacquer vessels and sutra-storage chests in black lacquer embellished with small floral designs inlaid in mother of pearl, the designs occasionally augmented with small, twisted, metal wires inset as borders and as the stems in floral arabesques. The tradition of inlaid lacquers continued into the succeeding Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), usually in black lacquer with bold floral designs inlaid in mother of pearl. The exterior of the helmet made from nine curved platelets, seven of which are decorated with sinuous dragons, joined by nine scalloped rims with prominent central ribs, the upper tips of the ribs notched to enclose the base of the double knot plume. The front of the helmet reinforced with a scalloped plate decorated with a dragon head at the center framed by two further sinuous dragons. The silver inlays are well preserved.Weight: 1,980 g Dimensions: Height 42.9 cmThis type of segmented Tibetan helmet, used originally with a coat of lamellar armor, was probably derived from Sasanian Persian helmets of the 3rd century CE. During the 14th-17th century, Tibet was a disunited country where a number of regional secular rulers allied to religious orders vied for power and in which warfare was not uncommon. A sizeable armor production in Tibet was the result of this situation. It describes the poet and friends riding on a river beneath the purported site of an important battle in AD 208, between the forces of Northern General Cao Cao and Liu Bei, scion of the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), who dreamt of reuniting China under a reinvigorated Han. A MINIATURE BRONZE ARROW VASE, TOUHU, YUAN TO MING DYNASTYChina, 1279-1644. Provenance: A notable private collector in Kensington, London, United Kingdom. Condition: Very good condition with old wear and some casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches, minor dents, and minimal losses. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 964.1 g Dimensions: Height 18.8 cmThe form of this vase is inspired by archaic bronze vessels used for touhu (lit. 'pitch-pot'), a traditional East Asian game that requires players to throw arrows or sticks from a set distance into a large, sometimes ornate, vessel. The game originated by the Warring States period, probably invented by archers or soldiers as a pastime during idle periods. It began as a game of skill or a drinking game at parties, but by the time it was described in a chapter of the Chinese Classic Book of Rites, it had acquired Confucian moral overtones. Initially popular among elites, it spread to other classes and remained popular in China until the end of the Qing dynasty. Touhu was usually a contest between players, who had to throw arrows into the mouth or tubular handles of the vase, which was placed at an equal distance between two mats on which the players knelt. Touhu vases continued to be produced in the Song dynasty and later, made in various materials including bronze, cloisonne, and ceramic. A RARE HORNBILL 'SANXING' SNUFF BOTTLE, EARLY 19TH CENTURYOpinion: The superb color and excellent polish of the present bottle suggest that it was created by using the ancient and today lost method of treating hornbill (see detailed note below), giving the material a rich translucency and protecting it from cracking over time. The carved decoration is well rendered and rare to find in such an elaborate manner on hornbill snuff bottles. Finally, the ovoid form, quite different from the rectangular forms commonly found, indicates that this is an early yet fine example from this rare group.China. Well hollowed, the ovoid body supported on a short oval foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with everted rim. Finely carved in relief to one side with the three star gods, the Sanxing, seated in a relaxed manner and holding wine cups, and to the other with Shoulao tending to his deer while his attendant is holding his cane with the double gourd, the shoulder and neck carved continuously with five bats amid clouds. The short sides each with a large double gourd vessel retaining the characteristic deep red color of the outer sheath layer of the hornbill, creating a unique contrast to the inner layer of translucent honey-yellow to pale cream tone.Provenance: Collection particuliere dans le departement Eure-et-Loir, France.Condition: Very good condition with significant old wear, natural imperfections to the material, few microscopic age cracks, and few minuscule nicks. Magnificent natural patina overall.Stopper: Translucent reddish-amber hardstone with black platelet, fine hornbill spoonWeight: 23.9 g Dimensions: Height including stopper 61 mm, Diameter neck 13 mm and mouth 5 mmHornbill was a highly valued material in China well before snuff bottles came into fashion in the Qing dynasty, after tobacco was introduced from the West in the early 18th century. The precise value is listed in the official regulations of the Ming dynasty, which set it for a single piece of 'ho-ting' (the term given to the material by Ming scholars, writing it with the characters for 'crane' and for 'head') at a thousand cash, the same amount given for half an ounce of precious coral beads, or a fifth of an ounce of rare seed pearls. This also shows that hornbill was worth far more than elephant ivory at that time, for the latter was valued at five hundred cash per pound, while it would have taken a great many pieces of ho-ting to make a pound, especially since the term was sometimes applied to the red sheathing alone. It is thought that there were once two distinct methods of treating hornbill, the solid casque with the tough red sheath that sits atop the upper beak, protecting the brain of the bird. The secret of the first method appears to have been lost but may have involved heating and perhaps permeating the material with some preservative. All known early pieces seem to have been handled this way, including snuff bottles. This treatment preserves the material very well, giving it a rich translucency and strength. We can only infer this preliminary manipulation from the finished product, since no direct information about the techniques of treating hornbill ivory has been recorded. Any special methods used by Chinese craftsmen were always kept as closely guarded secrets, by the guilds involved, to forestall outside competition. The second method involved carving the material directly, which left the surface prone to cracking.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 10 September 2007, lot 707 Price: USD 67,000 or approx. (2) Expert's note: This fragment is rare and was most likely part of an exterior structure of a lost and long-abandoned temple, exposed to the elements for hundreds of years. Such temple pieces have a particularly charming patina resulting from centuries of natural weathering, which is simply impossible to recreate even by the most talented and resourceful forger. A piece worth the close attention of the advanced collector!Durga slaying Mahisha is here represented in her multi-armed form, manifesting her supreme power as the dispeller of evil. Following the Devi Mahatmya text, she wields the mighty weapons lent to her by the assembly of male gods who singly could not defeat the demon. The worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has ancient roots, but the composition of the text Devi Mahatmya ("Glory of the Goddess") during the fifth to sixth century led to the dramatic transformation of the female principle into a great goddess of cosmic powers. Durga is the cosmic Magna Mater, and this popular iconic type encapsulates the struggle between the goddess and the demon Mahishasura, who symbolizes ignorance, disorder, chaos, and evil. Later textual sources generally refer to the subject as Mahishasuramardini, or 'killer of the buffalo demon'. She remains the most important and popular form of the great goddess known generically as Devi or Shakti.Literature comparison: Compare a related stone carving of Durga, dated to the late 9th century, Bihar, India, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2016.650. AN INSCRIBED RUBY-RED GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE, 1750-1850Published: Robert Kleiner, 'The Tuyet Nguyet Collection of Snuff Bottles and Saucers', Arts of Asia, November-December 1998, pp. 53, no. 21.China. Of flattened rectangular form with rounded edges, the long sides each with a raised oval panel neatly incised with a poetic inscription, the short sides each with a raised oblong panel.Expert's note: Many monochrome glass snuff bottles were incised with poems and inscriptions, adding to their attraction for the literati class during the Qing dynasty. This is a good example, the raised panels providing an ideal platform for the incision work, which is of spectacular quality and shows fine gilding as well.Inscriptions: With a poem by Li Yifu, Tang Dynasty “She (the goddess of the Luo river) takes the moon as her fan and the clouds as her dress. She dances and looks at her image mirrored by the river.”Provenance: From the private collection of Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter. A MANDARIN'S SUMMER HAT, JI GUAN, WITH A NINTH-RANK OFFICIAL'S FINIAL AND LEATHER TRAVELLING BOX, QING DYNASTYChina, 1644-1912. The hat of conical shape decorated with red tassels, surmounted by a gilt finial signifying an official of the ninth rank, the bamboo frame covered in a pale-yellow silk damask gauze with floral design, brocade rim, and blue ribbon. As a result, the shop had to provide a written guarantee to appease suspicious customers, an apparently timeless issue that most readers will be familiar with. Published: Linda Wrigglesworth, The Accessory, London, April 1991, page 3. Provenance: Linda Wrigglesworth, London, 1991. An English private collection, acquired from the above. Finding her passion for Chinese textiles in 1976, when encountering her first dragon robe, Linda Wrigglesworth opened her gallery in 1978, and over the following decades became one of the world's leading experts in antique Chinese costumes and textiles, helping to buy and sell pieces to private collections and public institutions worldwide. She has written countless articles and curated countless exhibitions. In 2008 she retired from her business and sold her private collection of Imperial textiles at Christie's New York. Condition: Overall good condition with natural wear, minor losses and traces of use, as expected from such a piece. The hat with small tears, few minor stains, and loose threads. The silk possibly faded and with some soiling. The box with minor scratches and losses, soiling, natural age cracks and associated old repairs. Displaying remarkably well throughout.Weight: 230 g (the hat), 4.5 kg (incl. the box) Dimensions: Diameter 32.5 cm (the hat), Length 56 cm (the box)With a matching hat box of the same period. (2)The present lot was intended for summer use, as indicated by the silk material over a lightweight bamboo frame. This semi-formal type of hat is referred to as ji guan or festive hat. Under Manchu formal dress regulations, the colors of hat finials were used to distinguish official ranks. In 1727 the Yongzheng Emperor introduced a new type of formal insignia, so-called 'mandarin hat buttons', a large round bead, which was mounted with a gilt base to the hat. These mandarin hat buttons signified a person's rank. Officials of higher rank were permitted to wear jewels, while lower ranks wore plain gilt jewels. Ninth-rank officials were allowed to use plain gilt beads as hat buttons.Auction result comparison:Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 24 March 2004, lot 34Price: USD 10,158 approx. A PAINTED POTTERY STEM CUP, BAN CHIANG, 1ST MILLENNIUM BCThe deep rounded sides supported on a tall spreading foot and rising to an everted rim, decorated with even red lines forming geometric designs on the creamy-white ware.Provenance: Dutch trade. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of weathering and erosion, few chips, minor losses to the paint, no fills or restorations. A Ban Chiang piece in such well-preserved condition is considered to be rare.Weight: 1,450 g Dimensions: Height 18.9 cm Ban Chiang, denotes an archeological site located in Nong Han district, Udon Thani Province, Thailand. Discovered in 1957, the site attracted enormous publicity due to its distinctive red painted pottery. During the first formal scientific excavation in 1967, archaeologists unearthed several skeletons, together with bronze grave gifts and unglazed earthenware pots which had been low-fired and painted red with unique, highly expressive and characteristic designs.A subsequent excavation at Ban Chiang in 1974-1975 was followed by an article by Chester Gorman and Pisit Charoenwongsa, claiming evidence for the earliest dates in the world for bronze casting and iron working. Subsequent excavations, including that at Ban Non Wat, have now shown that the proposed early dates for Ban Chiang are unlikely. The first datings of the artifacts used the thermoluminescence technique, resulting in a range from 4420-3400 BC, which would have made the site the earliest Bronze Age culture in the world. These dates stirred worldwide interest. Thermoluminescence dating of pottery was at the time an experimental technique and had been applied to Ban Chiang sherds of uncertain provenance. However, with the 1974-1975 excavation, sufficient material became available for radiocarbon dating. Re-analysis by radiocarbon dating suggested that a more likely date for the earliest metallurgy at Ban Chiang was c. 2000-1700 BCE. A date of 2100 BCE was obtained from rice phytoliths taken from inside a vessel taken from the lowest grave, which had no metal remains. The youngest grave was about 200 CE. Bronze making began circa 2000 BCE, as evidenced by crucibles and other fragments. A contrasting analysis was conducted by Charles Higham of the University of Otago using the bones of the people who lived at Ban Chiang and the bones of animals interred with them. The resulting determinations were analyzed using Bayesian statistics and the results suggested that the initial settlement of Ban Chiang took place about 1500 BCE, with the transition to the Bronze Age about 1000 BCE. The chronology of Ban Chiang metallurgy is still in considerable dispute.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related jar, dated 3rd century BC to 3rd century AD, in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 1972,0919.1.
