Extremely Rare Third Reich SS Enlisted Mans Dress Dagger by Richard Herder with Full Ernst Rohm Dedication, superb untouched as found example of a model 33 SS enlisted mans dress dagger with its original ebony grip with enamel SS runes emblem and nickel silver eagle to the grip. The nickel silver fittings are uncleaned and untouched with dirt and Verdigris. Small chip to the bottom section of the grip but this is all in the character of the dagger. Housed in its original scabbard with a surface rusting to the anodised centre and again the mounts have matching patina to the handle. Attached to the scabbard is the original short leather dagger hanger. The blade remains in near mint condition with much of the original cross graining remaining. Standard motto ‘Meine Ehre heist Treue’. Reverse side of the blade has makers trademark for Richard Herder Solingen. Also to the reverse of the blade is the extremely rare and full length Ernst Rohm dedication. Overall this is a superb dagger which has only recently come onto the market after being tucked away in northern Minnesota until recently in the veterans home who brought the dagger back after 1945. Blade 8.3 inches, overall 14.5 inches.

Rare Third Reich Deutschland Erwache Standard (Flag), fine untouched as found example of one of the most iconic flags of the NSDAP and Third Reich era is the Deutschland Erwache standard which were flown at all the major early NSDAP Reichspartei Tag (Reichs Party Day) events and other major events held by the organisation. These flags were mounted onto a pole system with a fine large golden eagle and swastika banner top with a box underneath which had the area that related to the NSDAP group. The flag produced in a fine red silk with cloth fringe in the German national colours of the period, red white and black. The centre of the banner has applied black cloth swastika with brocade wire outline to the interior to make the swastika stand out. Fine hand embroidered lettering to the top and bottom of the banner ‘DEUTSCHLAND’ and ‘ERWACHE’ which translates to German Awake. Reverse also with the central swastika but the top has ‘NAT.SOZ.DEUTSCHEARBEITERPARTEI’ and bottom ‘STURMABTEILUNG’. To the middle of the top section is the leather strengthened panel, this is to support the centre of the pole which would have originally been inserted horizontally. The flag has some fading, wear and a few moth holes etc, but is still a fabulous example of an extremely rare flag from the Third Reich period, very few have survived in private hands, due to the significance of the flag many were destroyed before they could be captured at the end of WW2. For more details of these flags we would recommend the reference book published by Ulric of England on the subject matter.

Only two copies of this edition have been located: The British Museum, suggesting the date 1814, and the National Army Museum, which apparently mistakenly giving the date as 1812, at a time when the island and printing press would have been under the control of the French.

Jean was the sister of the artist Katherine Read, who later taught her daughter, Helena to paint. Family tradition suggests that these works were painted by Helena Beatson but so few works by her are known in oil that it is difficult to be certain.Although best known as a pastellist and her oils are relatively rare, Katherine Read was the first Scottish woman to train as an artist and was one of the most fashionable portraitists of the 18th century, painting royalty and gaining fame across Europe when in exile as a Jacobite. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
