A Rare Japanese Shitan Wood Striking Mantel Clock, Makura-Dokei, 19th century, carrying handle, front and back glazed sliding panels, mounted on a wood base containing a small drawer, chapter ring with adjustable chapters, two calendar apertures above, the top and dial plate engraved with chrysanthemum and floral decoration, single pierced steel hand, movement with chain fusee for the going train and spring barrel to the strike train, verge escapement, adjustable chrysanthemum bob pendulum, floral engraved backplate with outside countwheel striking on a top mounted bell, 25cm high over handle 08.05.13, Case has been cleaned at some time, netting to the sound fret apertures have been replaced, dial and movement are clean, movement looks complete and in going order at present, striking is fuctioning, clock has been overall cleaned to a high standard.

Notes: Caesar was the favourite dog of King Edward VII and after the King’s death in 1910, walked n the procession in prominence ahead of nine kings and other heads of state. Some consider this insult to be the beginning of hostilities which led to the 1st World War

An extremely rare Steiff ‘paper-plush’ Teddy Bear, No.5622, circa 1919, with backing cloth and pile made of brown wood fibres, black boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black horizontally stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with similar finer wood cloth pads, hump, wood wool stuffing and FF button - 121/2in (32cm) high (some professional darning repairs and loss of pile). During the 1st World War, supplies of mohair ran out; in order to continue some production from the Steiff factory, they were forced to come up with some alternatives. One was a tweed-like material made from nettles called Brennessel and from 1919 to 1921 they used this rare ‘paper-plush’. It is believed that this is the first time an example of this rare Teddy Bear has come up for auction for many years

A rare German grey squirrel, probably Strunz with grey mohair, black boot button eyes with white felt disc behind, brown stitched nose and mouth, whiskers, swivel head, jointed limbs, white mohair chest and long mohair wired tail, 1920s - 91/2in (23.5cm) high (slight wear). Notes: This squirrel is virtually identical to the Steiff example from 1925-33, but does not have the tail joint. It is most probably Strunz as they are well known for replicating Steiff products

A rare Perry & Co.’s Patent ‘Automaton Dancers’ clockwork jigging minstrel, mid 19th century a composition and wood articulated figure with Negroid features, wool hair, painted minstrel outfit, ‘grass skirt’ and banana-shaped shoes, held on top of a wooden paper-covered box with a wire which once wound up makes the figure dance, printed label to the inside lid of box 101/2in (26.5cm) high (cracking to face, slight loss to forehead, missing a bit of hair and boxed rubbed). Notes: This toy is very similar to the automata made by Ives in America; Perry & Co. were a British wholesalers with an office in New York, so it is possible this toy is made by Ives

A rare German composition headed doll dressed as a Sturm Abteilung Trooper (or brownshirt), circa 1937 with painted blue eyes and brown hair, swivel head, jointed stuffed body, original cotton brown shirt, black felt hat and trousers, black oil-cloth boots and belts, paper fastener button and shop retailer’s paper label on left foot for ‘August Herbst Bonn’ - 14in (35.5cm) high. Provenance: This doll was bought in Germany by one of four brothers; in 1937 the Portwine brothers, who were serving in the British Army and the RAF, visited Germany and were amazed at the militarisation of the country and they bought this doll as a souvenir

‘Bubi’, an unusual Steiff Teddy Bear, circa 1908, with rare brown mohair, small black boot button, pronounced muzzzle, unusal black stitched nose, mouth and claw using a broad thread and with a double thread to mouth, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump, larger than usual body housing a larger inoperative voice mechanism and small FF button - 16in (41cm) high (faded to grey, mtting, some wear, small hole to left foot and right hand pad); and two photographs of the original owner Franz, one with a toy cow and the other with a plush toy behind, which is believed to be this bear. Provenance: The original owner of this bear Franz Joseph Fritz was born on 6 December 1919 in Meran, a town in South Tyrol, northern Italy. An aristocratic family from Austro-Hungarian noble descent, their origins date back to the year 1200. Being post WWI, it is most likely this bear was passed down from a relative or bought from a shop where he had been resting a long time!

A rare German composition Gnome or Dwarf doll, possibly Cuno & Otto Dressel with inset fixed blue glass eyes, detailed characterful face, white wool beard and tuft to forehead, jointed composition and wood body with moulded lace-up shoes with blue cloth socks fixed into the shoe, original red cotton shirt and hood, leather apron and green wool trousers, 1920s - 151/2in (39.5cm) high (crack across the top of the head, hidden under hood, missing tips of fingers and wear to shoes). Notes: The maker of this interesting doll is not known, but the use of cloth socks, being held in place by composition shoes, is something that Dressel is known to use on earlier dolls

‘Lady Louisa Elizabeth Huntington’, a rare 18th century English wooden doll, turned and carved wooden doll with gesso and painted head, torso with narrow waist and bust, carved and painted legs, jointed at hips and knees, blonde hair wig nailed to head, dark inset eyes, feather brow and dotted lashes, interesting carved philtrum, chin and ears, replaced kid arms, redressed in the 19th century, retaining original stockings and under slip, Jumeau Bee marked size 6 shoes, circa 1766 - 211/2in (54cm) high (face old repaint, wear to nose, left leg loose at knee and repairs to hip joints - not completely undressed to check overall condition); and letter of provenance. Provenance: In a letter written by Eliza Tanner Rose (formerly Hockin and previously Woolmer) - If my mother were now living she would now be 99 years old, this old doll was given to my mother when she was six years old, consequently the doll must be 93. My mother’s name was Elizabeth Woolmer and I named the doll Louise Elizabeth Huntington, because Lady Huntingdon was a relative of my mother’s and you will find on one of her aprons marked L.E.H. By the time my mother was grown up, your Grandmother was married, and had a little girl. This little girl was also named Elizabeth Woolmer and when she was grown up, my mother married, and had a little girl who was named Selina, after Lady Huntingdon’s daughter and the doll was given back to her. When my sister was too old to play with her she her to me and I have her to your Mama and Aunt Eliza. She has now been the amusement of six children of the same family and I should not like her to be given out of the family. Other dolls are pretty but there is a real expression in her countenance. Her ears are all marked and so are her ankles

A rare early frosted black Teddy Bear, possibly Strunz or American with boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose and mouth, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with grey felt pads and five brown stitched claws and hump, circa 1909 - 111/4in (29cm) high (replaced ears, slight repair to left leg, some general wear and patch to left hand pad). Notes: This bear, probably during his restoration, has been given red felt backing to his eyes, in the belief that he may have been Steiff. It is very unusual to find any bear, especially this early in a black mohair

Joy and Bettie’s ‘Soldier’ Teddy Bears, a unique childhood collection of twenty-seven named ‘Soldier’ Teddy Bears and animals comprising ‘Willy and Imp’, two very rare purple-blue Teddy Bears - 33/4in (9.5cm) high; ‘Bluebell’, a Farnell blue Teddy Bear; ‘Mary’, a blue bear (faded); ‘Jim and Jack’ two very worn Farnell bears; ‘George’, a Farnell bear (possibly white); ‘Rose’, a Farnell white cat; ‘Snow White, Tiny and Graham’, three white Farnell bears; ‘Cecil, Alice and Mac’, three golden bears with long skinny metal legs; ‘Fluffy, Joyce, Sqog, Sqag, Dumpy, Plumpy, Peter, Claude and Lily’, nine blonde and golden Farnell bears, ‘Rod and Bubble’, two red Farnell bears, ‘Green Eyed Man’, white Farnell monkey; and ‘Black Boy’, a Farnell black cat (some eyes and ears missing); sold with an original letter from the first owner to the second owner, naming most bears. Most of the bears also come with an old slip of paper with their names on, this has helped identifiy the ones not named in the letter. Letter transcript - Daffodil Valley Farm, Godshill, I.O.W. 6th May 1933. Dear Betty, I am so glad you are pleased with the Teddy Bears. I expect you will think of all sorts of games to play with them. Here are some of their names of the little ones. Dark blue. WILLY IMP Blue. BLUEBELL Very pale blue. MARY White. (oldest ones.) JIM.
